Has Matthews ever played wing back for us?  Gunter played at RWB both times Adkins played it.

When he was at Celtic, and before, he was a proper overlapping attacking full back.    He is only 29.

It’s simple for me, we need more players who play at that high intensity and have the ability to go with it. We have too many that can’t - Gunter, Matthews, Souare, Watson, Arter, Morgan and Kirk. Putting any of that group at wing back or central midfield makes us a slower team who can’t press, track back and make the right runs effectively enough.

Then we have Inniss and CBT who contribute when fit but are never likely to consistently play 90 minutes. Davison has the energy but doesn’t make the runs Washington does and doesn’t have the touch and ability in the air to replace Stockley.

That’s 10 players, it’s far too many. It means we can’t rotate, something you have to do in a 50+ game season. We can’t keep playing Purrington, Washington, Dobson, Lee and Gilbey for 90 minutes and expect them to keep up that intensity we need, we have to be able to rotate and sub them off. Jackson doesn’t bring on Watson and Morgan because of their limitations. He’s only playing Souare because he’s forced to.

Realistically we’re unlikely to replace more than 3/4 in January, and that’s at the very most. I expect JFC in for Schwartz, Arter to be sent back to Forest with a signing coming in. Can also see looking for u21 permanents and loans as they aren’t counted under the squad cap. Kirk gong on loan would free up another space. It’s difficult to see the others being offloaded.

Playoffs aren’t impossible but the more we strengthen our options up front, left wing back and central midfield the better our chances.
Gunter and Matthews have both (successfully) played as the right CB, in the Sunderland, Doncaster and Rotherham games. Gunter only lost his place due to the Welsh callup

You can play one of them in defence, freeing up Clare to play in midfield or at wingback.

And as others have noted, Lee has gone off the boil a bit in recent games, and would Morgan be any worse? Pressing isn't really Lee's game either
Exactly my point. Gunter and Matthews can’t effectively play right wing back despite it appearing to be their more natural position. They don’t have the legs to get up and down the pitch like Purrington does. They don’t have the pace or skill to offer enough in attack either. Ideally replace both in the summer, keep one at most. We won’t move forward if we retain too many players who can “do a job”.

We have too many players like that in the squad. It’s not so important at CB but Clare is the better option, he’s athletic, more comfortable on the ball and no weaker defensively. Agree on using Clare in midfield though, he’s the next best option after Lee, Gilbey and Dobson. Need to rotate them a bit to help keep them fully fit.

Lee presses, he’s just not going do it consistently for 90 minutes game after game. Morgan would weaken us, he doesn’t offer the movement or quick feet which makes Lee effective in that role in which he’s the most attacking of the three CMs. Morgan’s not an attacking midfielder yet has other weaknesses that mean he’s ineffective in a deeper position.
I'm not sure Purrington has the legs to get up and down either, and indeed hasn't been asked to. He's not charging down the wing and getting crosses in, as it's the right wing back who's expected to be more creative

Purrington is alternating between attacking and defending. When he goes forward, Famewo covers for him defensively.

Purrington absolutely does, he’s one of our fittest players. He constantly gets in the box when we’re attacking and supports the high press, but still tracks back. He can’t though be in two places at once, so Famewo covering is what we need from the LCB.

You only have to compare to Souare, Matthews and Gunter when they’ve played wing back to see the difference Purrington’s fitness and determination to get in those positions is a massive strength of his.

Jackson talked about it here: https://londonnewsonline.co.uk/johnnie-jackson-ben-purrington-can-score-double-figures-for-charlton-this-season/

Charlton caretaker manager Johnnie Jackson, asked about Purrington being in a rich vein of scoring form, said: “That’s not a fluke though.

“He’s got a knack of it. He makes good runs. He’s got the energy and fitness to get in those positions constantly – and he can finish. He has missed a couple as well, so he should be on more goals than what he’s on!

He makes good runs in and around the box yes, but what he's not doing (and not being ASKED to do) is make constant lung busting runs up and down the touchline, as Famewo covers in the left back when he's up the pitch.

Matthews and Gunter have never played right wing back under Jacko, as he likes to have a winger on that side putting in the crosses, whereas Purrington's role is more to attack the back post.
Gunter has, Adkins played 3-4-3 this season. Matthews must have done under Bowyer as he used 5-3-2/5-4-1 in the Championship. Either way neither those two or Souare have the fitness to make the runs into the box, press high and track back in the way Purrington can (even if Famewo being there means he doesn’t have to every time).

Regardless of what those three might have done earlier on in their careers they’re not effective wing backs in a back 3/5 or attacking full backs in a back 4. Purrington isn’t a typical attacking full/wing back either, but his fitness means he regularly gets into goalscoring positions.

From the little we saw of Kirk, he badly needs a lian out to get some confidence. He may have vome out cold - his crosses in injury time were better than the previous ten minutes, but he l9oks in need of a change of location for a bit.
Overall, we need a reshuffle. A striker is a big need as far as I can see. And I wonder whether another play maker in the middle - Lee is over elaborate at times and maybe a more direct player is a change of gear at this level.

    Over to you JJ.

I think it says a lot that Gunter & Matthews are fourth and fifth choice for the wing back role behind DJ, Leko and Blackett-Taylor
  • Options
The problem on Saturday ultimately stemmed from a lack of attacking threat. That hasn't been a problem up to now. The missing players really hit us and that is why we have to strengthen and get rid of a few too. Washington was an obvious miss but Famewo was also as it forced us to play Soare who really is ineffective in the extreme and Purrington has become a key player in that wing back position.

It says DJ, Leko and CBT are wingers and Matthews and Gunter are full backs......

I wonder if we would play two wingers if we had a left footed one?

We have had a couple of decent performances since JJ took over. However, most of these players are bang average and will revert to type over time. Average players will always have a good game now and again, but basically not good enough. DJ is a player I haven’t liked since he joined. Good game, bad game, good game etc etc not good enough. JJ isn’t a genius , he can’t do anything with this mob. Will be a long cold winter in SE7.
Yes we were poor yesterday, and it’s clear we need to strengthen the squad.
But… ‘A couple of decent performances since JJ took over’? Suddenly we’re ‘a mob’?
    Seems a little bit harsh.

Some serious over reactions on this thread.

It wasn't the best performance but it's far from one of the worst of the season.

On the day of the game, two of our most important players in recent weeks in Famewo and Washington drop out due to covid, then you're left with Souare in the starting line-up when you may aswell start with 8 players.

For the first 30 minutes or so we were much the better team, that goal on half time was a kick in the nuts.

Second half we were much the poorer team, granted.

That was nothing like an Adkins performance, the effort was there but the quality on the day is what let us down.

I think a lot of us suspected this wasn't going to be an easy fixture - plymouth are obviously no mugs and had the week to re group,  we were hit by covid (albeit as fans we didn't know who until the team was announced). Famewho is probably the single player we can afford to have missing the least atm given our defensive injuries and Washington isn't far behind due to his current form so all in all, its dissapointing but not unexpected that we lost this. Chances are, others may have been suffering from undetected covid. There is a bit of a concern re our away form and it would probably do us a favour to have the Wimbledon game postponed. Innis coming back is a big bonus and the news that Lavelle will be back in January. A bit of clever business in January and we can still make the playoffs. Chances are we won't but its definitely still a realistic possibility.

You're right. Some posters are overlooking Jacko's thinking: there's basically a forward playing winger on the right side. And a specialist defensive full back playing the left side.

The defensive wingback drops into the back 3 to make a defensive back 4 when required. Jacko himself has called it "lopsided".

Purrington has been brilliant getting forward when he can and ghosting late into the box, but he has the greater defensive responsibility of the 2 wingbacks.

Against Plymouth, we certainly missed Purrington's effectivness as wingback.

Understand it’s lopsided, I was pointing out was how much more effective Purrington is as a wing back compared to Souare, Matthews and Gunter, regardless of whether they’ve played there under JJ.

Purrington is fitter and works harder, the other three wouldn’t be so effective if they were used in the same role. That’s why I grouped them together with Watson, Arter, Morgan and Kirk in my original post - we have too many players who don’t offer the energy and intensity we need. Gunter and Matthews being able to do a job as a right sided centre back doesn’t change that. It’s the WBs, CMs and strikers we need that intensity from.

We won seven out of ten ffs. DJ was remarkably consistent across that run. All the players looked really good. We've been hit by Covid and couldn't get it going, it happens sometimes. This is the kind of negativity that tells me you've been waiting for this moment to pounce
No, I don’t pounce. I always support the team , but I do have an opinion. One to which I think I’m entitled to as a season ticket holder who attends with 3 generations of his family holding another 6 tickets. I will post an opinion on here, but will always support Charlton. Those who booed the team earlier this season ( they’ve probably forgotten who they are by now ) are the negative ones waiting to pounce. The ones who turned on Bowyer regardless of what he had to put up with at the club. So, I’m not ‘pouncing’ this is my opinion. New players are needed to mount any sort of challenge in this division. Where there was Taylor, Aribo and Cullen there is now Stockley, Gilbey and Dobson. These players won’t get us up. Leko, DJ, Lee etc are inconsistent and simply not good enough.
So, I will continue to turn up , and continue to support and cheer the team, even if they are at the bottom of the league. Those who will stand and boo when things go wrong are hiding in the shadows, not me. Have a lovely Christmas and a Happy New Year, whoever you are.

Did anyone really turn on Bowyer , I'm talking in the ground here ... Yeah a few of us could see he was washed up on the Charlton front and offered our opinions on that but I don't think there was any booooing of the loyal one .... he walked out on us , don't forget that .

There was no one in the ground to turn on him.
