If we keep the 3-5-2 I think Purrington needs to come back in at LWB, even if he hasn't been at his best in recent weeks. We just don't have any better options on the left. Leko needs to start at RWB. He's inconsistent, but he has the highest upside of our attacking options on that side.
I love Leko but he doesn't deserve to be anywhere near the starting line up after his performances this week.
I kind of agree but between DJ, CBT, Matthews, and Leko, who does deserve that RWB shirt? I mean arguably no one. My thinking is Leko at least has a moment of magic going forward that the others don't, even if some of the others are more consistent.
None of them do. If we continue to play this formation, we need to bring a RWB in.
I don't necessarily disagree, but if we do that we would have Leko, CBT, Kirk, and DJ, plus Gunter and Matthews, all wingers or fullbacks, in a formation that doesn't utilize any of them as first choice.
I know that we're largely already there, but it shows a real lack of joined up thinking between management and recruitment. This is a team that was constructed to play 4-3-3/4-2-3-1. That is, everywhere except the central striker role, where we don't have a forward who plays well on his own (though Aneke, who joined yesterday, can do that, but relying on him week in and week out is not a great idea).
So when Adkins is fired, Jacko comes in and has to find a formation that utilizes both our glut of wingers, and plays two up front. Playing a 4-4-2 with two out and out wingers is very risky in this day and age as you're often outnumbered in the middle of the pitch. So to be fair to Jacko, I think he has found a formation that provides some balance to our unbalanced squad. The problem is, it's still an unbalanced squad.
And that's before we get into the fact that we basically have three players (Pearce, Iniss, and Lavelle) for the central CB role because they lack mobility and technical ability to play in the sides of a three, one for the LCB role, and then a litany for the RCB, none of whom are natural CBs.
I think we've got some good players for League One. I just don't think they've been arranged and recruited to fit a system. Instead it's been more a case of short term thinking and getting the best available player, and not getting the best available player for a larger system and set up.
Kirk is the ultimate example of this. He's a good player in a certain role. But that role is LW with an attacking, overlapping LB. And we don't have an attacking, overlapping LB. So what was the thinking there? When we recruited him we had Gunter playing LB, and Purrington to come back. Purrington is not the type to get outside the wingers, get to the byline and cross. He likes to drift inside and get into the box. His crossing is mediocre.
First fix the defence. Too many sloppy goals being conceded. We are too often caught on the counter attack with our wingers/wing backs very easily dispossessed.
OK so Chuks is back and he can Score, when JJ was caretaker manager the rest of the muppets wanted to win games for him and now they don’t ????? FFS wake up and get your F—King Acts together we should have 38 points not 30. todays performance was shite for 50% of the Game, time to get a grip or clear out some non grafters !!!

And the sided cb's too far up the pitch. They should imo only be around the opposition's 18 yard box for dead ball situations. I'm sick of Clare and Famewo being well out of position at the same time for counterattacks.
I think we need to build a team for next season at this point
Going by the Gallen interview its partly what we're trying to do - I still think that we should stop expecting another mass exodus of players this summer - Do hope we stop being able to give additional options on contracts to older players.
Something stinks with the group of players, I dont know precisely what but either they are brainless or have decided they now don't want to play for Jacko
I've got very little attachment to any of them and the lack of desire to be first to the ball today is something I cant ever accept.
Point and a last minute equaliser was nice but that formation wasn't working today, we needed the numbers in midfield. 352 is often only a shuffle away from becoming a 442 diamond as generally one wing back will be a full back bombing on and the other will be a winger who can do the defensive stuff but really its Clare playing as a narrow full back
I dont like change for changes sake but we have to go back to outnumbering sides in midfield
We look so damn average. Defence was all over the shop, I'm presuming it may have been missing Pearce's organising ability. Midfield shows no creativity, Morgan was reasonable, Lee runs into dead ends every time, Dobson did his job well, Matthews isn't creative and nor was DJ.
Aneke was a threat and scored and Burstow was anonymous.
Henderson, although making a few good saves, looks past it and goes down too slow and sets up the goals for the opposition.
Clare, Iniss and Famewo all looked shaky and disorganised. We nicked an undeserved point and I'm pleased because it's about time.

CBT the only one who's put in a decent cross from them all. Granted he's only done one per match, but still the most!

Too many changes, too many players off form and without Washington and Stockley the team really don't know how to play without them. The work those two do, not only in being a threat but their hold up play is sadly missed and until they return we will struggle.
Feeble performance made worse by the handful of people who think it’s fitting to invade the pitch after a 94th minute pea-roller to salvage a point in a dead season at Cheltenham away.

Can we hope for it though?
None of these players are good enough.
Can hope for it - But I've felt for a while that people should be braced for disappointment if they dont get it.

Are you blaming the players for not playing for Jackson, or Jackson for setting us up badly?
Whatever way you try to spin it one lucky point from six v Crewe and Cheltenham is absolutely piss poor. I realise that we’ll be changing personnel in the summer which is just as well because we won’t be playoff contenders with this lot. Yet again we’re need ten new players.
There is nothing better than a last minute away goal nicking undeserved points (especially after the joke smoke in the home end). But….. that was shocking. Not been to many aways this season - performance felt on a level with Wycombe away. We’ve got the players but they seemed to have stopped operating as a team. On the train and on the beer, so happy for now but something needs to change
"Jackson made five changes from the side beaten at Crewe in midweek and was asked if he had also pondered a change in formation for the visit to Gloucestershire.
“I’ve been thinking about a lot of things,” he added.
“It’s easy to think after a couple of defeats you rip it up and start again. That’s not the way I go about my work. I believe in what I’m doing. I know the lads believe in it. When it’s implemented well, you see the things we’re trying to do. Today, for whatever reason, it didn’t happen. Individual performances weren’t good enough."
Wasn't there & didn't watch the stream so can't really comment on the match. However, thoughts generally are thus -
1) knew when I saw the team news at 2.05pm that we weren't going to win. Said on the match thread at that time that Jacko is morphing into Adkins with making 5 changes. Maybe some were necessary but I bet if we had won 3 on the trot the side would have stayed mainly unchanged.
2) we dont have the right players to play wingbacks. Back to Bowyers square pegs in round holes- so Jacko hasn't learnt anything from his boss.
3) if Aneke hadn't signed yesterday would Washington have started or would we really have gone into the match with Burstow & Davison up front ?
4) the side that started had scored just 5 goals between them all season - just shows how we miss the front two. If Purrington had played he'd have been top goalscorer. The midfield really do have to step up.
5) the point today is just papering over the cracks. Maybe not deserved but could be seen as the point lost by the linesman's flag on Wednesday or the point gained back from Shrews last minute winner. As they say, it all evens up at the end of the season.
6) Chuks single handedly may just save us from relegation. A point a game from here on in should see us safe in 16th-18th.
7) another game goes past where we don't win from conceding first. At least 2 teams did it this afternoon. We have done it once in almost 50 games. I know I keep banging on about it but only because it stares you in the face.
Something stinks with the group of players, I dont know precisely what but either they are brainless or have decided they now don't want to play for Jacko

Gallen said we now have the spine of a team, I don't really see that.
Short journey home but still feels like a wasted afternoon. We were shockingly bad, what has happened to them?? Clare played like a park footballer, Leko has gone backwards and the whole team just seem drained of confidence. The standard of football played was just so poor and the behaviour of some of our fans was worse. Miserable afternoon only slightly cheered by a last minute goal and meeting some friendly Lifers who were standing behind us. It can only get better...can't it???
FWIW I thought Dobson played well again. Couple of things didn’t come off but the boy never stops working and wanting the ball. We need someone next to him that wants the ball just as much as he does, so that we don’t just lump it.

Blame for me always starts on the pitch, players were not showing anywhere near enough desire to win the ball and dominate 50/50s.
My point about the formation is that it only works when its used to overload midfield and it wasn't today, Matthews was off the pace and doesn't have the intent to get forward. He's a decent full back but whereas Purrington understood part of that job is getting forward and attacking the back post none of our other defensive full backs get it

I have to say I disagree with you here. I think the blame starts off the pitch, and on the training ground. I don’t think desire has anything to do with our poor performance today.
I personally feel if we had a team that were more comfortable, better on the ball, and had more of a game plan then to either hit it long, or to get it out to the wing to be easily pressed, then we wouldn’t have been nearly as poor today.
Instead we are so predictable that every time we got the ball Cheltenham knew exactly which areas to press and when. We play, and have done for a long time, really turgid, slow and predictable football.

Don't expect a formation change anytime soon.
