Does Richard Gleeson play long format cricket? Really impressed me innthese one dayers and T20s. Wondering of he can transfer that pace and aggression to tests. Even if only a short term option whilst there is no Archer/Wood/Stone/Mahmood.

It seems he hasn't played red ball since 2020
An unusual career, a school and club coach who became a top player late in life

In 2017 Gleeson played for a combined Kent/Northants 2s team (early season when neither County had sufficient players to put out one side) against Warwickshire 2s in a 4-day game. The Kent players in that game were Zak Crawley, Adam Ball, Adam Riley, Calum Haggett, Hugh Bernard and Calum Basey. Crawley is the only one of that half a dozen still playing FC cricket as the rest have either retired or never made it as a pro.
Gleeson actually went on the England Lions tour following that summer (playing 4-day games too) but his career never kicked on in red ball (total of 34 FC matches) and in November 2018 he was invited to play in the Sharjah T10 competition. He then had success in the Blast and the Big Bash but, even as recently as April and May of this year, he was playing for Cheshire in the National Counties and Blackpool in club cricket as well as T20s for Lancashire 2s.
This all suggests that either he cannot sustain success in red ball or he has recognised that his body probably can't handle the longer spells required in the longer format of the game. It is good that England have recognised that he can bring something to the team in white ball and perhaps he is a beneficiary of the line that is forming between red and white ball players (as well, of course, of the current spate of injured fast bowlers).
Gleeson will be 35 in December and it appears that his career is now mapped out. At the other end of the age spectrum, however, we have someone like 20 year old Will Smeed who has played 47 T20s but never taken part in a domestic 50 over let alone FC game. There is probably a very good reason for that as evidenced by the fact that he has never shown any real success in County 2nd XI red ball cricket - the worry is that he is a product and example of the age group system and coaching that has been in place over the course of the last decade. Plenty can smash a white ball on a flat deck but how many can do that on one that shows assistance to bowlers let alone when facing a red ball given those conditions? The fact that we have an England Test opener who doesn't even average 30 in FC cricket rather answers that one.
Gleeson has a bowling average of 21 in first class matches? Blows my mind he's not played more red ball. Following the money i guess! Wasn't there some one similar a couple of years ago who's now retired? Was a t20 specialist death bowler and english. Went round the world playing short format. It might be gleeson?

I see pope is still batting at 4 for Surrey. If England are going to continue batting him at 3 I'd like to see him bat there for Surrey otherwise I think he is being set up to fail.

If they keep on picking Crawley, Pope may as well open for Surrey if he wants to make it lifelike.

He's completely made of glass. His back would never survive 4 day games anymore

that's a real shame, has great pace and a great looking bowling average in red ball. What a waste. We really need to work out what's going wrong with fast bowlers in this country.

Bowling over 90mph is basically Injury City no matter where you are, when in history you're from, etc etc. The human body just isn't meant to

I did think this when Pope first came back from England would we put him at 3 especially given its looking less and less likely that Amla will be around next year.
But ultimately surrey have a Championship to win and are we gonna get more out of Amla 3 Pope 4 than the other way round? 100% yes. It's more that Amla (as he is now, approaching 40) is less suited to 4 rather than it being Pope not suited to 3. In 4 day games when you're trying to force wins against teams playing for the draw (our problem this year) your number 4 has to be able to up the tempo, put pressure on the change bowlers and score all round the ground. Amla just can't do that anymore.
Earlier in the season there was an argument that Smith should be in ahead of Amla but Hash jas slowly worked himself into a bit of form and won't be dropped now. Even so I'd have Smith at 3 and Pope 4. Just better suits their individual skillets and what the team needs from each role.
second T20 at Cardiff tonight .. is Sophia Gardens a bigger arena than Bristol ? .. too many sixes, though entertaining do get monotonous i m o
Cardiff has very short straight boundaries, hence ducks in the River Taff are at risk from a straight six!
The only time a batsman can clear the boundary and still get a duck
I'm pretty certain that at some point in the history of cricket, at some level, a batsman on 0 has hit one over the rope and trodden on their stumps at the same time
Wonder why this thread is near the bottom of page 2 now ?
I'm reluctant to say what I think because I've said it a number of times already. But , what the hell, I will, nevertheless, because as I've also said before, I welcome the LOLs for doing so. The difference is that I don't "aftertime" unlike some on here.
The fact is that Morgan didn't retire just because he was so out of form but also because he recognised that we aren't the white ball world leaders we think we are and he wanted a legacy. Buttler has been in charge of four home white ball series this summer and we haven't won one of them. His own form has been affected by that responsibility (one 50 from 11 innings and that was his slowest ever from 31 scored) but, equally, we have a team of batsmen who are at their very best when playing on flat pitches and on small grounds. Give us a big pitch and an opposition that doesn't just bowl "slot" and we are found wanting.
But at least we have the Hundred to look forward to when some people and commentators such as Morgan will be waxing lyrically about how great the cricket is and what fantastic batsmen the likes of Roy, Malan and Livingstone are.
