Yes Jackson has been forced into playing Burstow, but no one is forcing him to continually play a system that doesn't suit Burstow up top.
The idea that Jackson has been allowed to throw these games away because we've got a few injuries is something that never happened to Adkins when we had no team in the initial month.
Different standards apply when it's Jackson it seems.
“When we get some of those guys back we will be stronger – I’ve no doubt we will improve,” Jackson said. “It’s difficult at the moment but I want to finish the season strongly and get a feel-good factor – end the season on a positive note".
“Then we can go away, get the summer exactly how we want it – recruit well and recruit early – get our group together and come back with one aim, which will be to get promoted next season."
There's evidently going to be a bit of a clear out this summer. Some players may already know or suspect they are not going to be here next season. Like Powell was 'son of Curbs', Jacko may have learned a lot from his old Charlton manager. He was one of the few survivors of the big culling, when Chris Powell put together a rebuilt squad, "recruiting well and recruiting early".
We seem to be seeing the same pattern as when Chris Powell took over ..... he inherited a side that either couldn't or wouldn't play the way he wanted. So he sacked off most of his squad and brought in new players that would play his way.
Just my own thoughts, of course.
Could certainly explain some of their shitness but surely they can't know for sure they're going. You would expect them to be playing to keep their jobs.
When you are down things just wont go your way-Stocklys cross was handled by the defender .Most officials (linesman right on the spot ) Would have given this, Not that it would have made a difference in the last 5 mins. Ref and officials, very poor --Second point their defender tries to dribble across the back line, loses the ball. and open goal Burstow blasts straight at their keeper. Its just not happening---- A lesson on 'fight', for Charlton players, was seeing 2 of our players, on the wing, and one of theirs on the deck between them. We lose the ball ,and their man ,kicks out at the loose ball, while still on the deck, and wins it. Punts to one of his men. Our boys just watch ,Its called fight--- I see one of our last signings Nile John (recommended by Powell) was on the bench When will he play
The connection between having a bit of presence up front and keeping a clean sheet in that second half should be noted.
They were 2-0 up. They weren't even trying to score. And they still could've, at least twice.
Oxford were 2-0 up last weekend, took their foot off the gas and still scored two more times...
I refer you to my last sentence
Hang on a minute. I got pulled up on the match thread for using ifs and buts. But now it's alright to use it to make a point that suits a different narrative. Bottom line, they didn't score.
It comes to something when people are celebrating a 0-0 second half in a game we lost 0-2 against a team 10 senior players short.
The three wins we had against Fleetwood, Pompey and Wimbledon all had Clare, Inniss and Famewo as back 3 (Inniss and Fam scoring against the Wombles). Up front we had Aneke and Washington in two of the games and Aneke and Burstow in the other one. The stability of the team selection was no doubt a contributory factor in winning the games. That’s all gone to pot over the last 5, with key players injured, including 4 strikers, and the replacements being inadequate. JJ has already shown he doesn’t fancy the likes of Matthews and Gunter but they are being selected as others are out injured.
If Fraser and Stockley are fit enough for the bench - then they should start - what’s the point in waiting until we have gone behind to bring them on ? better to start them and sub them as necessary.
Very odd goings-on behind the scenes.
Why not play Kanu - nothing to lose.
Leko/Lee/Gilbey/Morgan/DJ are not going to score.
Just because you're fit for the bench, doesnt mean that you're fit for 90mins
It probably doesnt matter if we play Kanu, Burstow, Campbell or Leaburn - They're all kids with little experience against some big Centre-Backs, I'd be extremely surprised (at this stage of their development) if we didnt see the same as what we're currently seeing with Mason
Fwiw only Fraser of the two was the one that looked anything like fit.
Great to meet up with another Lifer, take a bow ElfsborgAddick.
As for the game, well we carried on where we left off in the last four games. The startling thing was midway through the second half out fans started a chant "How shit must you be, coz we've had a shot" tells you all you needed to know. Toothless doesn't quite cover the levels of passivity this squad can produce. If Jacko considers a that good enough, then he's not the manager for Charlton, despite the love fans have for him. Maybe he is just too inexperienced for this job. If he can't sort it out, can he be trusted with an overhaul.
Would most fans choose a nobody that brings success on the pitch, over a fans favourite that brings us 'this', I think we know the answer.
Jacko is gone in the summer, so yet more upheaval to come. The writing is on the wall. Sandgaard will fanny around recruiting the manager and another preseason is wasted and the 'left it too late', feeling rolls round again.

Thought Stockley looked his usual self - He's never the type to act like Washington and run about constantly - We have to remember as well, that Jayden has a petulant side, if the ball is being hoofed forwards, his team mates have to pray its accurate as he gets bloody frustrated.
Especially when he doesnt have willing runner for a strike partner. Its a shame that Burstow chose to shoot (cant really scold a Striker for doing that) instead of passing to Stockley second half, as he'd put himself in a good position
The idea these players could get a club stalwart like Jacko sacked so early into his managerial career is a disgrace, and they should be ashamed of themselves.
Of course everyone has their own opinion but why any fan who has watched this team this season thinks changing the manager is the solution is beyond me. The issue is not the manager, its the players. Pure and simple. The players need to carry the can, not the manager. Some of them couldn't perform under Bowyer near the end, never really got going under Adkins and ditto for Jacko.
Until we get to the end of the season nothing is going to change for us with this group of players, they are not clever enough, not confident enough, and simply not good enough to be any higher in the division than where they are sat now.
JJ has my full confidence because he is not the issue, and what manager out there is going to get a better tune out of this group until the end of the season? It would be nonsensical to even consider getting rid of JJ.
Make no mistake if we get relegated this season, and for the first time all season I actually think its a possibility, the only people who should carry the blame are the players.
Really didn't care about today's result, watching what's happening in Ukraine is bad enough than worrying about our plight. I do think we'll stay up easily if Stockley and Washington stay fit
Well we are playing teams gunning for the play offs and we will probably lose again next Saturday but if we are to be in a relegation fight then it’s playing those teams around us and below us that matters. It would have been great to have had something to cheer. We’re on the train back all a bit empty of enthusiasm but at least it’s not raining. Gilbey is no captain. Akin Famewo….what was he on today! 4 straight passes into the stands. But Stockley does make a difference (especially defending set pieces). Don’t blame the manager. Anyone who has to put matthews and Purrington on has my sympathy. Maybe it’s a metaphor for life that some things have to be truly shite before anything good happens because it truly is shite at present.
Jackson picking the same formation and team week-in and week-out must show he's given up on the season too?
Matthews giving away goals every single week and still gets picked, why?
You said this on the match thread.
With the injuries/suspensions we have may I ask which players Jacko should have started/played today that he didn't?
Maybe Watson or Soaure? Maybe Leko? Castillo? John? Pearce? DJ. Or should he have chucked a load of kids in?
He is not getting things right but our squad is abysmal. Watson, Soaure, Innis, John, Matthew, Gunter and Castillo should never have been bought in/retained by our inept recruitment team.
We are allowed, what 21 players in our squad. Those above are a third of it.
We were going backwards rapidly in January with an opportunity to put some recruitment right. We bought two kids on loan who are so unprepared they have contributed just about nothing, an injury prone striker and a midfielder that hadn't played for a couple of months.

I agree on the formation.
You complain about the squad but Jackson was the manager that brought in John and Castillo that have barely featured.
Choose a formation that suits the players you have, do we have wing-backs? No. So don't play a formation that needs them.
I would honestly rather he played the kids mixed with experienced players that gave a toss rather than the same Matthews, Gunter, Gilbey, Leko nonsense.
At least show that you understand things aren't going right. Don't pick the same players with the idea that they're magically going to turn up after losing 5 games in a row.
Insanity Is Doing the Same Thing Over and Over Again and Expecting Different Results
It’s one of the things he can try to change/halt the slide. The injuries have been bad, at a bad time, and unfortunate. There’s more than likely an element of a few having given up, and of course, the majority aren’t good enough.
Jackson can’t control the injuries, the ability or the ones that have given up, and it’s hard to do anything about that.
However, he can (to an extent) control who he picks and how the team set up. Now I say to an extent, because the squad is the squad, but what about catching a few of our beleaguered and mediocre players off guard. Kanu ahead of Leko for example. I appreciate blooding youngsters too early in tumultuous conditions can back fire, but as you say above, banging the head against the brick wall with the tepid 3-5-2 and personnel we’ve had in the last few weeks, it’s toxic.
Although opposition teams will know we have a lot of injuries, won’t be expecting Jackson to go 4-4-2 or 4-4-3 or something different. Maybe try it. I’m as guilty as anyone at work with an approach to my role. I know it’s hard to try/do different things, but we’re right up shit creek at the moment
Jackson cares, that’s clear. He’s also terribly unfortunate to inherit this bunch of crappos, at such an inexperienced stage in his managerial career. However, he’s just said he gets a full week on the training ground and he’s gonna be grafting. I believe him. But let’s try and work smarter. What would be the harm of mixing up next week. Everyone expects us to lose, we’re probably going to lose, and doing the same thing now for the last 5 games has got us 5 defeats. Fortune favours the brave sometimes, and I don’t mean go all out attack, I mean, be brave enough to change it
Granted it will still be tough, but Jackson himself said the players need to show they want to be part of it. If they don’t, show them you don’t want to be part of letting them coast until their contracts run out and make it bloody awkward to put themselves in the shop window. For the likes of Gilbey who has another year left, sit him down and say, do you want it? Do you want to be in the team next year or not. Same for DJ.
Start having the confrontational conversations. Start changing it. Nothing to lose
“When we get some of those guys back we will be stronger – I’ve no doubt we will improve,” Jackson said. “It’s difficult at the moment but I want to finish the season strongly and get a feel-good factor – end the season on a positive note".

Jackson can say what he likes. Adkins said the same thing after the Hull game last season & Sandgarrd said we were going to "blow through this league".
Talk is cheap. Actions speak louder & so far I've seen nothing over the last 18 months to make me think that we will be any better off next season.
It's clear as day, there's going to be a clearout. Jacko has been dropping hints in his interviews for the past few weeks. He's urging players to play for their futures if they want to be here next season. It's equally clear some players are not busting a gut; perhaps they already know or suspect they'll be gone?
Adkins himself was dealt the short straw. He was promised good players and maybe there were several targets that eventually signed for other clubs, either at Championship level or just elsewhere for a bigger dollar ..... but they didn't sign for Charlton. Adkins could barely put out a match fit 1st team in August. The players he eventually got, were hopelessly unfit when they signed weeks after the season had already started. That fact alone killed our season right from the first few games.
You'd hope lessons have been learned this time around, and that "recruiting well and recruiting early" has already began in the Janury window with the signing of Aneke and Fraser. There's also been changes in practices involving the recruitment team, which is now more streamlined.
In my original post, I was seeing parallels - and if Jackson is to stay as manager, he at least needs players that will give not only ability but also the required effort and the resilience to fight as a team unit. Chris Powell experienced the same issues in his first season (for example, Dagenham away, anyone?), as Jackson is facing now. Powell, like Curbs before him, played big emphasis on signing players with the right character; even interviewing all prospective signings himself. Jacko would do himself a favour if he did the same.
Player character is everything in football. No team wins anything without that team unit consistantly showing desire and will to win.
We've lost 17 games this season, only the bottom 2 have lost more. In fact no-one outside the bottom 4 (apart from us) have lost 17 or more.
Only thing keeping us out the relegation places is the fact we went on a good run once Adkins was sacked. A new manager bounce certainly helped us. Otherwise we really would be in the shit.
When Adkins was sacked, we already were in the shit ...... in the relegation places, remember?

I agree the formation needs changing.
What another shower of shite.
Forget injuries
Forget poor refs
Forget bad luck.
These things apply to every team in the league and not just us.
The bottom line is that this group of players are not good enough.
Where we go from here depends on how deep Sandgaard s pockets are but one thing is certain without a major overhaul nothing will change.

My only comment is anyone who thinks we aren't in a relegation fight is seriously deluded.
