Gilbey should be the one surplus to requirements
Today was textbook. Aside from sloppiness in possession and utter ineffectiveness in attack, this was a case study in how he hides from being available for the ball in positions where he can play forward passes, and then makes himself available when the option is a five-yard wall-pass, achieving nothing. Watching him play is fucking torture

And yeah, Gilbey did manage one forward run, in the same phase of play where he'd just passed it straight to Kilmarnock on the edge of our box

I knew Garner was the wrong appointment. HMS Wet the Bed ready to set sail again.

Good to see Charlton back playing again as a whole.

    Positives
     - Inniss didnt get injured, and looked solid
     - Scott Fraser appears to be showing the type of promise we thought we were signing in January
     - Garner has hopefully learnt more from making the mistakes, than had we won 3-0

    Negatives
     - The goal
     - Wollacott looks like he'll be number two this season
     - We're looking to create the perfect goal, rather than just leather it at the Goalkeeper
     - Gilbey along with Davison have been the weak links today.

Few neutral thoughts as well, as think it would be harsh to call Leaburn a negative, but dont think he's ready for First-Team Football as yet... Aaron Henry too could probably do with a League Two loan next season, but would like to see him involved with pre-season a little longer before making a final assessment.

Felt that Kirk impressed more today than he did during last season, a few signs of showing his talent... But a bit like DJ can really drift in and out of the game at times, and doesnt have the defensive capabilities that DJ does have.
It was a kick about, I have no idea how you come to these conclusions.

    I took zero from it.

I don't think Gilbey deserves half the stick he gets on here. He doesn't have the killer ball that Fraser does but he puts in the effort and did a good job linking up play. Considering he had two U23s in an out-of-position Aaron Henry at RB and an out-of-position Miles Leaburn at RW for support, I think he did just fine. Also no point comparing Morgan to Gilbey in this match because Morgan was playing deep where as Gilbey was box to box. That said, MacGrandles will take that spot so it's just if Garner thinks he needs backup depth for the box-to-box or the deep lying role more.

Only saw the second half but Kirk and Fraser looked good. Stockley did fairly well also in holding it up.

Disappointing not to see much link up between the 3 midfielders. Gilbey was pointless. Henry, obviously not a right back but his deliveries were awful. Wallacot didn't convince but looked comfortable with the ball at his feet when he wasn't miscontrolling it, that is.

Anyone know whether the Colchester friendly Terry kept mentioning on the commentary is actually happening? Nothing on our website or their's? Think he said it was a midweek game.

If we are going to be looking at tap in goals then we need a poacher. Stockley’s miss in the second half would have been bagged by a natural finisher. More bodies are needed and will be coming in.

It's a clear back 3 there but then both wing backs were well advanced.  Confused but interged.

When a back 3 is played the idea is your wings backs get forward in attacking mode other wise you end up as 5 at the back ?

  • ‘Gilbey puts in effort ‘

sick and tired of seeing these type of comments. He isn’t a very good footballer

You win 🥇 for the first person to say the obvious.
    You were 16/1.

I once lost 3 out of 5 pre seson friendlies  on Championship Manager 99/00 and went on to qualify for the Champions League that season so worth noting for some perspective.

Send your CV to Dangerfield at Sparrows lane and he will pass it on.

Yeah, these are my thoughts. In that second half he was no worse, and no better, than most of the other individuals on the pitch.

Not really sure how you can be classed as great, crap or average in a pre season knock about.

Exactly this. It's embarrassing the way some pepole are going on after the players have had a 45 minute practice session.

Better just to accept relegation now and not bother with the rigmarole of a 46 game season.

Not watching but it sounds like our finishing in front of goal is still pants as per the last few seasons. Early doors though, its only a training session
So we're not missing Connor Washington, then ?

Sounds like we wanted a left back & a finisher.

Don’t need Garner to confirm we’re trying to sign players to fill those positions. No club in our league has a finished squad when they play their first friendly.

Well you either played great, crap or average. It doesn't define their overall class, but a comment can be made about how they were today.

FWIW first half team looked good, stick Stockley in that side and I think we score.

Love the footballing minds pointing out we still need players, TS should have just posted his manager search in here.

You have this weird obsession with the Albie vs Gilbey debate.  Neither are going to be starting for us this year and neither were the problem today.  The problem today was how uncomfortable our defense in the second half looked, the lack of depth at the wide positions such that we had to play Henry, Leaburn and Egbo out of position and the lack of finishers up front

Garner will not want to start the season picking players who's strengths don't lie in the positions they're required to play to suit the system. I predict more comings and goings in July, which should be "Get your sh*t together month" for Ben & the boys.

Wollacott reminded me a little of Thuram. I don't think first choice keeper will be a 50/50 choice. But it was only half a game.
