Politicians are arseholes. Nothing bold enough will be done regarding climate change until it’s too late. Sooner or later there will be a major climate catastrophe in one of the big cities in one of the big countries and a few hundred thousand will die. Only then will the political classes wake up and act. Until then it’s just a green tick to put on their manifestos. I have zero doubt that at some point in the future life as we currently live it will change forever. Humans really are quite stupid creatures.
So what are we doing ourselves to save the planet?
If it was just about learning to live with temperatures like these for a few days, or even a few weeks a year it wouldn’t be such a big deal, but it’s more about global crop failures and threats to the water supply. And the related mass migrations and wars that could result from them.
The temperatures that we’re seeing today could be dwarfed over the next four or five years.
What evidence do you to make this statement, dwarfing 40c is a pretty serious number, and in 4-5 years??
Because of the compounding effects of these events that causes them to speed up. The impacts of this hot period will increase the likelihood and severity and timing of the next one and then it grows exponentially. We are already 30-50 years ahead of where they thought we would be even 5-10 years ago.
This is why its heartbreaking to see nearly all the candidates for the next PM talking about cutting back on a green focus, ending or extending our net zero target etc. its absolutely essential to life that we bring it forward not delay it.

Good point. I guess we should all be doing our tiny bit but in reality we need government policy and significant financial help to become more eco efficient. Those of us who might be able to do something unilaterally will be doing so but the vast majority of houses, flats and dwellings will remain inefficient because people just can’t afford to make the changes that matter. I’d still say switching off a single light helps. Unfortunately we are not doing anywhere near enough despite government bollox.

I see what’s happened here, I think people have made the mistake of thinking these candidates want to be PM so they can make a difference to our lives in a positive way and not just for short term personal gain…
I got a bottle of water from the little shop at the station this morning and glanced at the papers, where The Scum had 43c plastered on the front…
The Mirror also ran with 43C. (Full Story on pages 4,5,6,7,8 and 9).
I never bothered past the headlines (Blowtorch Britain, Schools shut ... rails buckle .. runways melt. Europe Inferno, Burning Questions, More to Come. Etc.

THE PLANET WILL BE FINE. We are so fucking arrogant we equate the continued comfort of our species with the future of the planet. The planet will continue rotating itself around the sun and plenty of creatures will carry on just fine, others may need to evolve. We might be finished, but plenty of other species will be fine.
Just seen a teenager in Kidbrooke with a tracksuit and woolly hat on, not a joke. Looks happy as Larry as well.
Unbelievable. Just saw a lad with a tracksuit on,hat and jacket, riding his bike. Special.
I’m fairly certain even if the kid I saw wasn’t born here and was perhaps raised in a baking hot climate m he’d still be sweating his plumbs off in this!

Methane being predicted to be released from the ground in Siberia in vast quantities is just one factor. The global temperatures we’re seeing now were predicted to happen in ten to twenty years time. Everything is accelerating dramatically.
And for people who talk about 1976 temperatures, here’s how much higher they are now

“Yeah but back in ma day 35 degrees was hotter than it was these days”

Not only that mate, you are fighting against a mindset of people thinking this is hysteria and scaremongering. The Sun’s headline aside, I don’t think media outlets are doing anything other than highlight this is not normal and taken in context over time, we’re in big trouble. The saddening thing for me is that there are so many people who seem to think this isn’t that important and that it’s just a few days.
I wonder how these people will feel in a few years time when access to food and water becomes an issue and the infrastructure of Britain can’t keep up and mass migration starts to become the norm. Probably blame others/gvt for not acting when they had a chance.

Although I hold no malice against any other species and wish them good luck. I don’t really give two fucks if crabs and periwinkles carry on, life unhindered if the human race of which I’m one ceases to be. It’s not arrogance in the slightest.

Agree it takes all of us to make a difference. I see too many people bemoaning the lack of governments and corporations around the world doing their biut, while that is true we all still need to be doing our bit both directly (do we need to be driving our cars all the time? Can we use less electricity at home? Can we insulate better? Switch to greener methods of power?) if everyone did these then yes it would make a difference. Of course the biggest polluters need to do something as well so we can do that by not voting for politicians who refuse to acknowledge this is a serious issue, stop buying from companies who continue to destroy the planet for profit.
There is so much whataboutery whenever people are asked about what they are doing to help, hopefully these past few days will be a wake up call to many.

I think you only need to read some of the posts in this thread to see that the past few days will have zero impact as a wake up call to a lot of people.

Out of interest SHG, what do I need waking up to. What are you doing to save the planet and make it cooler that I am not doing or ignorant to?
At the end of the day we like to blame the government. If in the name of saving the planet. How many of us would. Give up holidays abroad. Only use a car in a emergency. Have our food rationed. Limit water and electric use. I mean do me and the wife even need to live in a 3 bed house when theres just the 2 of us?

You are right mate, but that’s one of the reasons why we have government, to regulate things in the interest of the public.
Don’t take this example as concrete it’s purely a scenario, but if the government stamped down on business flights to see clients that I do 8 times a year and said you can only do it 2 times or your company is heavily taxed via new regulation, I’d he gutted I can’t visit Miami as much anymore, but I’d understand it.
It’s the reason many of us pull our hair out over sadiq khan! People had to sell their old vehicles to get newer more environmentally friendly ones in. It annoyed me, but I get it.

On a global scale, an increase of 5 degrees on average will result in the end of civilisation (although likely not our end as a species). 'Dwarf' in this instance doesn't mean 60 degrees at all...

It's far bigger than just our species. There are currently around 1,000,000 (one million) species that are threatened with extinction. It sounds far more arrogant to me just shouting, The Planet Wiil Be Fine.

Cycling back home later is going to be an absolute joy though.
