Seen a couple of posts ‘suggesting’ Stockley was ill.
I thought that was the case actually, as he appeared so listless from the start.
Anyone got the exact info on this?
Garner said it, in the post- match interview on Charlton TV. He used the phrase “under the weather”. I take that to mean a cold. They never say ‘ a cold’ in pro football circles, for reasons I discussed a page earlier. A couple of posters gave it an LOL without commenting further. I presume those two never played football even at Sunday League level and never swerved a visit to the Valley when they had colds.

It also seems a number of posters are suffering from mild attention deficit disorder. For their benefit I remind everyone that Jayden Stockley last season reached 20 goals in all comps despite being injured for several weeks as well as suspended for 3 games after being stitched up by the pub team at Accrington. You’re welcome.
What did Accrington do to him?
Sorry, wrong pub team, it was Burton. Accrington did a similar job on Taylor. I guess that's how you compensate for not having the budget.
  • Can’t see why we are looking to get rid of foster caskey. If we had him on the bench to bring on instead of mccrapy. He has done nothing for me if his not fully fit why put him on bench.
he has just plodded about and gave the ball away both appearances.looks totally uninterested. Don’t think his even put a tackle in.
I’d keep caskey and get rid of him. Even gilbey would be better than what he has shown so far.
He’s played about an hour of football for us and you want to get rid already?!!

Fraser so far has been a bit of a disappointment for me. He seems to be off the pace and lacks the cutting edge I hoped we would see. Morgan on the other hand has amazed me so far as he has really stepped up and put in performances I thought we would only see flashes of occasionally. Dobson has proved his value and must start imo. For me Dobson and Morgan have cemented their starting place until their form drops. I think payne will come in for Fraser so that's our midfield. JRS for Kirk will also make a massive difference hopefully
That’s the team I’m hoping for on Tuesday. Thought Kirk was good last week but neither him or Fraser are doing enough to create chances which is what they are supposed to be there for. I wouldn’t be surprised if Morgan can’t go again as he ran a ridiculous amount yesterday but along with Wollacott and Clare he’s been one of our best players so far. Hopefully he can start again as McGrandles has looked dreadful so I think needs some cup games to get up to speed

I think TS's learning curve is flattening out but there is still some previous errors sitting in that squad. If a side is serious about promotion then Chuks has to be forgotten. I understand it was a gamble to up the ante in the squad under Jacko but a three year contract for a fella whose appearances won't cover six months is holding this squad back. McGillivary should be allowed to go too, I was never a fan but he is too good a keeper to play second fiddle and his wage would allow us options to complete this squad. Add to that JFC and Gilbey and this squad looks more settled and streamlined. I understand that getting these players out of the club is easier said than done but loans and possibly sales are possible for apart from Chuks, who's only option is donating his body to medical science.
So what if Wollacott gets injured? McGillivary is under contract and if he is too good a keeper to be a reserve, great if we want to make a push for promotion.
We'd be better off with a loan, also will McGillivary want to be bench warming week after week ?
Equally would he want to take considerable pay cut?

I can't see him being a number 1 anywhere that would pay what we do.  If we loan him out to play we would have to contribute to his wages and the wages of who ever replaces him.

The same is true for Gilbey.

Would MacGillivray actually want to move for less than 2 years with a 6 month old baby?
I wondered whether Wycombe might be a possible destination for McGillivary. They haven’t properly replaced Stockdale.
They wouldn’t have properly replaced Stockdale if they signed him either

I wasn’t at the game but just watched the 10 minute highlights on Charlton TV. Interesting to contrast what those who went  said about how well we played and the highlight package, which concentrates only on what happens in the final third, that looked like Wednesday were all over us.
I watched the "highlights" on TV last night and they showed nothing from us. So I watched the highlights on Sky looking forward to seeing this multitude of chances we were supposed to have had and they just weren't there. Best chance we "created" came from their keepers fuck up.

Have I missed something? Are our chances deliberately not being shown, or weren't there any?
We created chances including some we should have scored from. Off the top of my head CBT had 3, Sess 1 after cutting in from the left, Fraser 1 on the edge of the box, Kirk 1, Payne 1 from range and no doubt I’ve missed some as the stats show we had 11 shots.

Ah yes the Accrington mob, really odd how that day turned around, our players being practically assaulted towards the end of the game by Accrington after the day started with the supporters laying out the red carpet for their owner

There’s a reason Sheff Wed fans booed their team off the pitch at half time. We completely outplayed them for the first 60 minutes.

Games are 90 etc, I get it. But this is in response to saying we created nothing on the highlights packages.

We created very few clear cut chances which is why they didn’t make it into the highlights packages for TV. Neither did Wednesday though until they scored.

I said 20 league goals something he has never achieved in his career at this level. Stockley will not score 20 this year.
Bearing in mind the rare talent of a goal scorer I don't get the stick that Stockley gets.

Stockley has scored 105 goals in his career 346 matches which is a respectable goal per 3.3 games.  For Charlton that figure improves to a goal every 2.7 games.

Compare that to Leaburn senior who used to frustrate the hell out of me. 66 goals in 474 games - 7.1 games per goal and for Charlton 53 goals in 344 games - 6.5 games per goal.

Stockley ended last season as 14th best goal scorer in league one which improved to 8th when it came to goals per minutes played.  And that in a team that were all at sea for the greater part of the season.

I appreciate that others will talk of the nuances of tactics and playing formations, but sometimes you just need someone to bang it in the net ... or as Bill Shankly famously said.

"If you’re in the penalty area and aren’t quite sure what to do with the ball, stick it in the net and we’ll discuss your options afterwards!”
I get your point. I wasn't bothered that Stockley missed two headers against Derby because I know over the course of the season he will put enough away. Getting the chances is the most important thing. I was bothered that CBT messed up his chance yesterday, even though he scored against Derby because over the course of the season I think he will miss too many.

I wouldn't drop CBT btw. He is a key player for us but we need look elsewhere for anything above 4-5 goals.

I wasn't there but Andy Holt is a great owner. He'd be happy to meet you or me or anyone else in the pub again too, and discuss shithouse tactics. I think I know roughly what he'd say too.

Anyway, red herring. Most people, including Jayden himself agreed that he should have been more careful, but the point is that he kept scoring goals in a shit team despite two layoffs. And good job he did, otherwise it would have been an even worse season than it was.

I’ll assume that’s aimed at the xG. Ask Man U if they think Brentford make the game complicated…
  • I haven't got a problem with their tactics. There are refs to stop clubs cheating and they get their results playing to the same rules as everybody else. It is something to admire that they find a way to maximise their potential IMO.

Not quite. What if he headed it over the bar? Or straight at the goalkeeper? Hence 73% chance of a header from that range not resulting in a goal.

27% is not zero. He controlled the header well and gave Wollacott no chance. Not every player would’ve been as composed in that situation.

No it wasn't but see why you thought that.

Prague's comment made me laugh in response to that though (map co-ordinates).

I put Shankly's comment to remind those that over state formations and generally on here over analyse to a degree of writing certain players off on that premise.

I’ve said it before, but the problem with Stockley is that he’s actually quite good. And teams that get promoted tend to have a striker that is good, or even very good. Or two of them.

  • We had the game under control but very clearly ran out of steam at the end. We pressed brilliantly in the first half but the weather didn’t really suit a team that wanted to press as to keep it up for 90mins was impossible in that heat. We didn’t create many chances but the main positive I took was that we were far less open than we were in the first 2 games. Very few teams will limit Wednesday to that few chances at Hillsborough this season.
Hopefully JRS, a new striker and Aneke returning can be the missing links that turn a game like that into 3 points
