"Concern that tributes to the Queen may not have been universally respected, and the potential for global embarrassment if fans were disrespectful, was a factor in the decision to call off all football in the U.K. this weekend."

Well it's a good job that those idiots won't be able to make the games to come when other people do get a chance to act with dignity and express their admiration for the Queen.

If that’s the case, then surely all football until after the funeral on Monday should be called off?

That’s called bending over for idiots mate, we don’t do that here.

Yes but you don't get any football supporters that like cricket too which is why the behaviour was so impeccable.

Disappointed with that - the only embarrassment would be to those that chose to show disrespect at this time - they would have only been showing themselves up in front of the world and damaging their own brand. Should have let the world see what these people are all about.

Let’s be honest about it. The only club in England that I think anyone suspects this would be an issue with is Liverpool, based on their fans’ recent behaviour in cup finals.

If there is even the slightest shred of truth in the fact that they called off the *entire pyramid* all because they were fearful of what those idiots would do, then shame on them.
...and there is a simple way of mitigating that - just don't televise it or give it a platform. Heavily edited highlights on MOTD for the game if they must.

Unfortunately we have a number of highly successful outrage-peddling media outlets in this country that would have loved that story.
That’s an excellent point.  Because whatever you think of Liverpool fans, the daily mail/sun/telegraph are bigger w*nkers by a country mile.  I’m glad they haven’t got their story to fuel more division with.

Surely it just comes down to numbers. Rugby has about 8 pro matches going on this weekend with much smaller crowds, cricket one game. The football leagues must have around 40 matches going on with tens of thousands of people travelling around the country, particularly around the capital which is seeing a huge influx of people not to mention all the pageantry going on today. Seems like a sensible decision to me. Not sure why kids games are postponed though think it’s a nice way for kids to remember the history of what’s going on by participating in a minutes silence.

For anyone missing the football stick the cricket on (sky sports 1, Now Tv, dodgy stream) Cracking start to the game so far.

Or don’t even have the anthem/minute silence at their stadium.

Its not a cup final at Wembley, so they wouldn’t be obliged to do it.

Let them have to explain that to the world and see what it does for their ‘brand’.
It wouldn’t harm their brand, it would nationally but not worldwide they’d get abundant support from parts of Ireland, US, parts of the Middle East and Far East.

If today is the mark of respect from the FA and EFL, I can get behind that, no problem, but if this approach extends to beyond the funeral, I think it will be over the top. Cancelling youth football, I thought was just plain daft, but got a lie in. For those with BT Sport and craving for a fix of football, they have live Serie A and Ligue 1 matches today - watched Lens vs Troyes last night - passionate bunch of fans in Lens, that’s for sure.

I don’t actually think Liverpool fans (or any clubs fans) would have disrupted the minutes silence. Really silly if this was a factor in the decision making.

It won't extend beyond the Queen's funeral . The 7 days of mourning after the funeral is for The Royal Family, their households and I believe the military.

I find the lazy and petty tribal assumption that Liverpool fans were uniquely likely to be disruptive, almost as offensive as the “reasoning” of the FAPL. It certainly gives them cover for it.
It is a little bit lazy but not completely inaccurate.  They call themselves the socialist club ,or the peoples club.  Which is not a bad thing at all, but there are extremes within all clubs, I’d argue they’re the most likely English club to boo in numbers without doubt.  But it’s no reason to postpone games.

I have no affiliation for or against Liverpool, so no reason for you to suggest there is tribalism in what I said.

Unless you can remind me of another English club which has repeatedly disrespected the national anthem in recent times, and are happily willing to do so by their own admission, then I’d like you to explain what is ‘lazy’ about it too?

It is a confirmation that compared to 1952, the dickhead to normal person ratio in this country has shifted inexorably the wrong way.

Show some respect and go watch your sport next week.

This is a quote from a made up story in the Daily Mail. Would urge caution in letting it shape opinion generally. It is a 'journalist's' attempt to stir emotions based on what may or may not have happened at a shamrock rovers game.

    Source-https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-11198513/AHEAD-GAME-Fear-fan-dissent-Queen-tributes-factor-Premier-League-halt.html

Fwiw, I am appalled at the football authorities decision to cancel games. We are being taken for fools yet again.

Football may have to stop, but the culture war continues unabated it seems
