UEFA EURO 2024

Couldn’t see another thread. Delete if I’ve missed it.

The draw for qualifying for the Euro 2024 tournament, hosted by Germany, is about to take place.

Following the poor performance in the Nations League, England will be in pot 2 so a clash with a big nation is likely. Although the top 2 from each group will qualify anyway.

  • Could get Poland, Switzerland which would seem slightly easier.

Though Hungary are in there too and obviously that didn't go so well recently.
  • Group C:

    Italy
    England
    Ukraine
    North Macedonia
    Malta
  • That is a tougher group than we’d have liked. 4 of those 5 countries were at the last Euros.
  • Take that. Presume Ukraine won’t be playing in Ukraine?

Ireland and Scotland have tough draws.
  • Ukraine have been playing their home games in Poland, although they'll be hoping to be back home before the end of qualifying if not for the start.

Wales will be pleased to have got Armenia as their pot 3 team, but then again Armenia are probably fairly happy to have got Wales.
  • Of course we get Italy!!
  • On paper the toughest draw possible - all the top seeds of each pot in one group.
  • Scotland vs Haaland for a place at the tournament! Do 3rd place teams all go into the playoffs or is it just a certain number of them?

It's based on the Nations League rather than 3rd places I think?

    Ah that’s good then!

  • Scotland are guaranteed a playoff, as are all countries that won a Nations League group except in the lowest division. England and Wales are a long way down the rankings for a playoff spot. Not impossible, but you wouldn't want to be relying on it.

Should be interesting as last time round there was only one team from League A who didnt automatically qualify (Iceland), meaning League A Play-Offs were mostly made up of teams that failed to qualify from League B

However that time round, League A only consisted of 12 teams, whilst it consists of 16 teams now - There are 14 ranked higher than us (discounting Germany), but three are: Hungary | Austria | Czech Republic... Sides who historically stand less chance of finishing in the top two of Qualifying than England do, although all look to be in pretty easy Groups.

This is where the Nations League works in my opinion.
  • Good. About time we have a test in qualifying. I would hazard a guess that over the last 6-8 tournament qualification group stages we are in top 2 for points.
  • Not a huge deal. Qualifying should be doable given it’s the top two going through.

The problem becomes if that’s our World Cup qualifying group in a couple of years as well. We could very easily miss out on 2026 because of a couple of stupid losses to Hungary.
  • Should finish in the top two. The banana skin would possibly be north Macedonia but if we lose to them we don't deserve to qualify anyway.

I think one of the reasons they’re moving World Cups to 48 teams from 2026 is so that it will be near impossible for the big sides to miss out.

    Scotland still won’t qualify.
  • Can we gift Ukraine 6 points as a gesture of goodwill.

Tom did say that it'll be hard for the big sides to miss out...
  • Draw taking place soon

Being in Group C or Group F would be ideal - this would mean winning the group gives you a third place team in a potential round of 16 tie and a second placed team in a quarter final tie.

Wouldn’t have to face another group winner until a potential semi final at the earliest.

40% chance of England landing in C or F.
  • Who are in the pots for Euro 2024?

Pot 1: Germany (hosts), Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium, England.

Pot 2: Hungary, Turkey, Romania, Denmark, Albania, Austria.

Pot 3: Netherlands, Scotland, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic.

    Pot 4: Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, play-off winner A, play-off winner B, play-off winner C.

    Path A - Wales (29), Poland (31), Finland (59), Estonia (122); Path B - Ukraine (22), Bosnia-Herzegovina (69), Iceland (71), Israel (75); (Path C) Greece (47), Georgia (77), Luxembourg (83), Kazakhstan (100).

What’s the best and worst possible draw?

Best: Albania, Scotland (players we know well),  Play Off Winner  B or C?

    Worst: Hungary, Netherlands, Italy?

  • Pot 1: Germany (hosts), Portugal, France, Spain, Belgium, England.

Pot 2: Hungary, Turkey, Romania, Denmark, Albania, Austria.

Pot 3: Netherlands, Scotland, Croatia, Slovenia, Slovakia, Czech Republic.

    Pot 4: Italy, Serbia, Switzerland, play-off A (Wales/Poland/Finland/Estonia), play-off winner B (Ukraine/Bosnia/Iceland/Israel), play-off winner C (Greece, Georgia, Luxembourg, Kazakhstan).

Draw begins by drawing Germany into Group A.

Now introducing the other Pot 1 teams before drawing them into groups.
  • edited December 2023
Spain in Group B. Position B1.
  • edited December 2023
    England in Group C (!!!). Position C4.

One of two favourable groups by letter.
  • We wont meet another Group winner until the Semi-Finals

France in Group D. Position D4.
  • Belgium in Group E. Position E1.
  • We wont meet another Group winner until the Semi-Finals
As long as we win our group, yes.
