How long do we keep batting for? Lunch? Or do we throw them straight in?

Allow DBD to get his triple, then declare?

Matt walker's top score is only a few more than he's on so maybe he'll declare so he doesn't beat it!

Just seen the Surrey scorecard. Just when you think it's safe, that there's no way, they'll do something utterly outrageous

Just read that Simon Harmer’s 5-fer was his 32nd in 7 summers at Essex.

It's hardly surprising that Surrey are doing so well when Umpires are visibly frightened to give their batsmen out

"Big LBW shout, looked pretty close"

The latest contender for the 2023 Understatement of the Year Award.

Middle and leg would have gone cartwheeling if Jacks's pad hadn't intervened.

I'd have given that back in my umpiring days. Bugger it, I'd have probably joined in with the appeal!

What odds that we would hit the highest score of any Div 1 side this season?

Which was just as well because we are now all out and DBD is left stranded on 300* (439)

621 all out and a lead of 384

Taking away the incredible knocks by Muyaye and Bell- Drummond, the rest of the innings is pretty mediocre. Hopefully that is a reflection of the pitch giving the bowlers some help, and we won't be playing on a wicket like the one Surey chased down a 500 plus total !!

That won't do his average any harm! Well done DBD!
  • Fantastic from DBD, been seen as more of a limited overs specialist in recent years, but has shown he still has the class for the Championship.

Also, does some fantastic work in schools to promote the game in South London, especially in areas where the game hasn't had foundations.

I would say the lower scores in the bottom half of the card is more a reflection of the state of play they found themselves in.

Muyere and DBD had put us in such a commanding position you had a combination of holding down one end to shepherd DBD to his next milestone and a bit of free licence to get a wriggle on to give us as much time as possible to bowl Northants out a second time.

EDIT: Denley was always going to get out cheaply; it's often the way after a mammoth partnership like Muyere and DBD had.

Apart from the triple ton, DBD also carried his bat. I wonder if he's ever done that before?

    FROM THE BBC

For added context, Daniel Bell-Drummond's first-innings total of 300 would be worth two batting bonus points - as many as Northants and Middlesex have mustered between them all season...

A wicket to Denly and a fifth catch of the match to Leaning

    30-2
