Met an old mate for a pre match beer. Had a good old chat about our days travelling home and away - Tuesday nights in Middlesbrough, getting arrested in Newcastle when we won 4-3 after being 3-0 down, Anglo Italian cup away, etc.
Didnt actually want the game to start and interupt our chat.
"Luckily" the first half was so abysmally shit we both agreed to fuck off back to the pub at half time and spare ourselves the inevitable result we knew was coming.
So actually had a good night. But fuck off Charlton. And fuck off Garner.
Whilst I can't disagree with the highlighted sentence, the second half was so one-sided it beggared belief. Cheltenham did absolutely fcuking nothing in the second half and yet punished us for one stupid error. There are a million things wrong with our club and with tonights performance but "the inevitable result" was more down to our not capitalising on our second half dominance rather than that we replicated our first half showing imvho
‘Cultural issues’ like a manager who thinks Connor McGrandles is better than both George Dobson and Jake Forster Caskey? jog on you overpromoted muppet BG not LM
I won't be renewing my season ticket next year, can count x4 others the same. It's really sad, I love Charlton more than anything but it's a complete chore going at the moment.
We played ok in the second half in a backwards and sideways kind of way, but a lack of movement and intent by the more forward midfielders always means we will lack a cutting edge.
Too many players are playing it safe. Fraser for me is currently woefully underperforming and opting to play a simple sideways or backwards pass, when he loses the ball he rarely gives chase.
People give Dobson stick at times for his passing yet if you listen to Stewie the manager, he has insisted that Dobbo adds this passing game into his natural defensive style.
The kids were a plus tonight but really just shows how negative the ownership of the club has become.
DJ is not a forward, Kirk... luxury we can't afford, Stockley the less said about really( yes he didn't play and we still didn't miss him).
Aneke albeit talented is a squad liability when we are restricted by budget and squad places.
People have said we miss CBT but for me, he's another slightly better Kirk... occasionally shows up.
We miss Egbo and O Connell even though the latter wouldn't be in a promotion seeking squad... which we aren't of course.
Calamity Craig needs to go, can't for the life of me understand AMB being dropped, he's young and he is the future.
Pretty much the rest are just lower division journeymen. We are what we are unfortunately, mediocre at best. And that sums up our one dimensional style of play. Mediocre.
The most upsetting thing tonight is I totally missed that we were even playing tonight. I listened to the Brazil v Cameroon game and enjoyed it, even laughed at the curmudgeon that is Chris Sutton. When 8 saw a few messages bemoaning the result I checked. Sadly I wasn't shocked, surprised or that bothered.
Once upon a time a defeat ruined my weekend. Now I feel overcome with apathy. Thanks Thomas for relieving me of the distress. Its quite a thing you've pulled off. Even Roland and the spivs didn't make me so disillusioned.
Same here, I could of sworn we had Morecambe away today. I thought 30 years back at the valley was some in house game. Only on the way back from a night out my other half said oh Charlton lost. Can't say I was shocked. Garner is just about more entertaining than my left toe.
I think I may have just got to the point where I genuinely don’t give a f**k anymore. I didn’t buy the stream. I didn’t even think about doing so. I didn’t watch Brazil either such is my disillusionment with football). I saw the team sheet and put a quid on Cheltenham. A very small protest gesture. I wish I’d put the tenner on that I saved in the stream!
Actually my apathy is the equivalent of unconsciousness. The brain’s way of dealing with severe trauma or pain. I’ve just shut down on CAFC cos it would be too painful otherwise. My bucket of pebbles has finally got too heavy. I’ve enough things in life to worry about without all the added burden of this self-flagellation (cue Kenneth Williams gif). The irony of last night being the celebration of our fight to regain the Valley. All that effort by so many of the faithful. For what? We are a mouldering hulk of a club just sitting at the scrapyard waiting for the big black ball and chain to come smashing through our once proud hull. I’m sorry that TS has proven to be a dud. I really wanted him to be the real deal. Unlike some of his predecessors I don’t think he’s a crook. A narcissist yes, a deluded fool possibly but a crook no. But the fact is we are beyond broken. Garner is the latest clown on the puppet show but he’ll be gone soon. He’s trying very hard to get the sack so his wish should be granted. But he’s just another small stain on the bedsheet in the overall run of things. The decline has been too long and too terminal. That heady day at Wembley. Only three and a half years ago but, especially given much that has happened of greater importance in the world since, it feels like a lifetime ago. In reality it was a blip. The truth is that the club I love so much died a while back. I’ve been deluding myself. The time has come where I am choosing apathy because the alternative is too painful. As @AFKABartram said a few pages ago, we are the diehards and even we are falling one by one. I genuinely fear for the future of this club. And I’m almost past caring. Almost.
2nd game I have been to this season. My god what have we become. Depressing to see a line up like that. No ambition from the owner, a manager who wants us to play out from the back when he does not have the players to do it but it’s ok Manchester City play that way so it must work 🤦🏼♂️.
Under Clark Griswold’s Ownership the crap served up on and off the pitch will continue on unfortunately. My daughter goes to a primary school in North London close to Arsenal and being the only Charlton fan gets the piss taken out of her but still on the way home says we may be rubbish but they are my team. The only thing that made me smile all night.
Feel for my dad, brothers and nephews all season tickets holders that have to endure that crap every week. Also only found out that as we were going in that I could have got a free ticket from the season ticket offer instead of paying 🤦🏼♂️🤣🤣.
Just sell up TS. Football and Charlton is not for you.
An absolute insulting disgrace that he brought JFC on in the 92nd minute. I feel for Garner a little BUT as some of said we should be higher than we are. The cards he has been dealt by this prick of an owner however are bang out of order.
I wondered whether there was a bit of politics there played by Garner to snitch Sandgaard up. Who knows if bring on JFC triggered something contract wise that the club had previously been avoiding? Who knows
You may be right but the trigger is a doubling of wages I believe. Maybe another £1500 a week. On the basis that they will complete his transfer to AFC Wimbledon as soon as the window opens, the hit to the bottom line will now be relatively small.
How can Sandgaard be asking any money for the club? Losing £8m a year and a first team squad worth zilch. You could make a case for a few of the Academy prospects but it all amounts to a row of beans. Sandgaard was stupid giving Southall and the Fake Sheikh anything. A new owner should avoid making the same mistake. Sandgaard has to give it away to get out of the money pit.
But who des Sandgaard 'give it' to? Another Southall ..... ?
We've seen this movie before.
We can't odds that Oggy and we can't stay as we are. If they turn out to be chancers they won't be here long. We will find a good owner sooner or later and we 8 years in and looking for number five, so hopefully we are approaching 'later.'
So much for the dynamic senior management team that Sandgaard boasted about. It all seems rather wishy washy to me.
From Louis' report it seems they hardly speak. Garner says that he has no clue to the budget or policy for January and three times he mentions the brevity of his conversations with Sandgaard - and by implication it seems he can only assume what Gallen is thinking. Surely recruitment in January should be an absolute priority with the three man team (oh and Martin) in a cohesive force working with a plan.
(From Louis' report).
When asked how his conversations with his boss have gone this week, Garner said: “They’ve been fine. I haven’t really had too many conversations" [with Sandgaard].
“We spoke briefly about recruitment for January and that’s it".
“We had a brief conversation about January"
But is Garner confident he will be given the funds needed to add to his squad in January?
He said: “I don’t know is the honest answer. I’ll give my suggestions to Thomas. I’m sure that Steve [Gallen] will be doing the same from his perspective. Hopefully we can recruit well and add to the group.”
Slept on it. Mitchell and Ness deserve praise. They had good games. So did Clare, Dobson and Fraser IMO. Totally toothless upfront and I honestly don't blame the manager. If you don't have any decent attacking options, poor opponents will sit back and beat you. This is all on Sandgaard. In all honesty, despite playing some decent football, most of us could see that result coming.
Crooks and idiots, crooks and idiots. And Sandgaard isn't a crook but bloody hell, when it comes to football idiots, he is up there with the best of them. He is much more dangerous because he is a massive narcissist to boot. He may have saved our club, he may not have. But he certainly can kill it if he doesn't go sharpish. And he can take that bloody song with him. It would probably have grown on me if he achieved what he set out to, but it constantly reminds me what a problem we have with that oaf of an owner.
I don't like Sandgaard, but Garner shouldn't be making decisions to prove a point to him. He should be trying to get the best of the players he can. At the moment he's not doing so.
Garner getting a fair bit of stick on here, but is he really the problem? I honestly feel that with the right backing he'd actually be a good manager for us.
Pretty obvious he's been stitched up by Sandgaard and not given what he wanted, and on top of that we've got a number of injuries to key players.

I agree. He has some tools but a few important ones are missing. Give them to him and then judge him I say.
If Sandgaard is in any doubt about what the fans think of him and how he is running this club he should be made to sit down and read every post on this thread.
We didn't deserve to lose that. we played some good stuff at times without creating a great deal . Mitchell was impressive as was Clare but the lack of investment in the transfer window , up front and in defence , is absolutely killing us. let's hope this so called investor/buyer wasn't there tonight. I'm pretty sure Garner will not be at the club come the Brighton game.
Feels like its the start of a relegation struggle to me. Forget the possession stats and the countless neat triangles (and there WERE some positives, like Mitchell & Clare)....if you can't beat that Cheltenham team at home, then the prospects don't look good.

Fraser was awful. Constantly underhitting passes and losing the ball
Having injuries to key players affected Bowyer, Adkins, Jackson and now Garner. Not having certain positions covered for two years is ridiculous. Left back to name just one !
Ben Garner is trying to get Chas and Dave to perform classical music at the Albert hall when maybe a good old knees up at Albert Square would be more fitting for this Charlton squad bereft of quality and numbers in so many positions.
No I don't mean Hoof effing ball but quality diagonal balls with an ability to increase the tempo. Mix and bloody match.
The worrying thing is that our run of festive games is very difficult. Peterborough and Portsmouth will be tough and Oxford are a bit of a bogey team for us. If we don't get anything from the Bristol Rovers match we could be bang in trouble come January
Absolute shit show that Garner doesn’t know the budget for Jan.
The club completely screwed up the last window & left us short in multiple areas. MS, SG & the recruitment team have had 4 months to put together a plan to put that right but I have zero confidence that they will.

Why would he bother paying the compensation?
