I think you are being very harsh on Stockley, I thought he put himself about well.

Spot King Sam Lavelle .. who'd'a' thunk that would ever happen ?

Just seen the highlights and I conclude that Ashley Maynard Brewer is the real deal. Some great stops last night. Reinforces my belief that he should be our Number 1. Better that Woolly, IMO.

I thought Stockley was poor, yet again. Closing down was non-existent at the death, despite the fact he'd only been on the pitch for 10 minutes.

Would have bet my mortgage in him missing his penalty.

Swear people, and I have no understanding why, are looking for things in Stockley’s performance last night that just weren’t there.

He came on, he won a few headers, he occupied Brighton’s back line physically but he lacked any sort of decent movement as usual - but that’s down to ability and not mentality.

Aside from the fact that we won, that was one of the worst penalty shoot-outs ever.

    Posting without reading.

There was a time when practically every game used to be like last night, or better, or not much worse.

    FFS
It is cyclical. The cycle is 50 years though. 1947 - we won the Cup. 1997/8 was the season we achieved promotion to the Premier League. So we are exactly half way through this cycle and only 25 years to wait!
What about our promotion to the top flight in1986 or don’t that count because we were playing at Shithurst 😉.

A couple of us where we sat thought he was pretty cumbersome.

However, we also thought his back injury is far more problematic than anyone is letting on. He looked far stiffer than he usually does even.

That’s my belief too … he is nowhere near as combative as he used to be aerially

First 3 pens hitting the 'woodwork' and some shockers too. Lavelle turned into Shearer. Football is funny. We were laughing at him taking an important one a few months back, but now it's fun and brilliant of course :)

Good morning fellow addicks. Well I'm still buzzing from last night! That's why we love the game, and our club. When we pull together, players, fans, coaching team, TS... na, kidding about him... we create quality evenings like last night.

Now the not so good parts I observed. Whoever runs the club on match days needs to carry out a robust review, and if they're happy, they need to be reviewed.

With ticket sales much much higher than the usual league games, surely provisions could of been planned around this, but it that didn't seem the case at all.

I didn't get to my seat till 10mins in. The queues outside the turnstiles was substantial, and the speed of getting through them extremely poor.  A lovely lass had to come and assist people getting through, once she showed up, things happened a lot smoother.

Closing the North East quadrant food and bar facility meant ridiculous queues at the 2 other CE upper venues. Staffing those outlets with just 3 staff, with only 2 able to serve was just dumb. I overheard so many fans say, I can't they can't be bothered waiting to get served, as they'll miss the 2nd half kick off. After missing the 1st 10 mins , I wasn't willing to miss anymore of the game, so went without. And I really wanted to try the onion bhaji burger!

As for the players, I loved the commitment, the desire, and although we lacked finesse and skill at times, we battled like absolute warriors.

Except one. I watched him even when he wasn't on the ball, the body language, his demeanor, all of it. I did this because I've been critical of him, and so I wanted to see, in the flesh, if I'd been harsh. I haven't been harsh enough. I was, and still am feckin livid.

I am referring to Jordan Stockley, out club captain,  and I cannot accept  that bullshit effort last night. He played for 20 + minutes, so there should of been loads of running, and hassling of their back line, but NOPE, he really couldn't be arsed.

Poor positioning in open play, when we had the ball.   Not willing to hit the channels when we stole back possession to give us a different outlet, he sat central, nothing stuck to him all evening except thier centre halves.

I don't give if he feels hard done by not starting, and then seeing A&E come in before him, he is meant to lead by example. His penalty miss summed up his night. Atrocious.
Re organisation for the match- there was absence of staff checking bags etc at East Stand, I went in about 15/20 before KO.(with a rucksack)
At the conclusion of the game I also noticed 2 flares thrown in North Upper, one  got trapped in the super structure and burnt out there- I stood there wondering if electrical cabling maybe nearby if I was going to witness another stadium disaster.Thankfully not. Wondered if North Upper stand supporters were searched?

  • Not mine but thought it was great.
    Poetic.
  • 3 successful penalty shootouts in the EFL Cup this season, and not much in common when you look at the takers, showing the amount of injuries and rotation in the sides picked.

QPR - Stockley, Kirk, Morgan, Henry, O'Connell
Stevenage - Clare, JFC, JRS, Aneke, Fraser
Brighton - Stockley (m), JFC, Dobson (m), JRS (m), CBT, Sessegnon, Lavelle

So only Stockley, JFC and JRS have been involved in more than one shootout, and JFC is the only player to score both times!

I read Paddy’s comment and chuckled at how many posts I’d need to scroll through until Kenneth Williams emerged. Never disappointed, good work Otto

Why did the players head straight off and not go round clapping the East and North?

Seemed strange to go off so quickly after such a win

Dobson was the only player to spend any time facing the Covered End as well. I thought they'd all be lapping it up.
  • It's so funny. After all the abysmal performances, a caretaker manager, an absolute bananas week off the pitch with total instability and then we only go and beat a really good Premier league team to reach our first QF in 9 years. What a crazy few days to be a Charlton fan.

  • I didn't realise Izale McLeod played for Brighton. That dive was something else. Can't believe he didn't get booked for it.

Stockley came on and won a few headers and is getting some praise for it. The bar is pretty low for him isn't it?

I thought we noticeably lost any ability to hit them on the counter when he came on because he won't turn and hit the channels like Leaburn/Chuks. We lost that out ball and were penned in.
  • I thought stockley was terrible, barely even won headers especially the first 10 mins he was on - not sure he actually got a touch of the ball for quite a long time. He’s been dreadful this season.
  • Bloody hell... Just took a look at the Live Football page on the BBC website that they run on a daily basis.

I know its not the FA Cup, but apart from a handful of columns, our game is barely mentioned - Few cut and pastes from twitter, and then quotes from the Brighton Manager, and Jason Steele... Both of whom moaning that it was a frustrating game for them, as when you get to penalties anything can happen

Stockley won a few headers, including one in our own box from a corner by them.   However, his ability to get about the pitch and close down their defenders and defend from the front was piss poor.

We cut him some slack because we won last night but his performances, all season have been terrible.   If he's carrying an injury, then I feel sorry for him but he is simply not fit for purpose and we need better.   He also took a shit penalty and doesn't lead as a captain either.   Enough said.   We will need better if we ever want to get out of this division.

One of my worst days as a Charlton fan. Absolutely miserable.

Indeed you can argue that Stockley's most useful role at the moment is to shore up the defence aerially, when you need extra height to defend corners and free kicks.

Just saw this stat on the Brighton forum for Kaoru Mitoma, who was up against Richard Chin in the second half:

0 out of 4 dribbles succeeded
0 out of 5 duels won
    possession lost 12 times

I’ve felt that Richard has looked out of place on occasions this season, but thought he was  superb last night.
    Chin was excellent last night.

However for me, Ness was unreal! I was watching him very closely and tactically he was faultless. He was clearly tasked with shadowing Lallana which he did brilliantly. Trossard then replaced Lallana and Ness followed suit with him! Absolutely brilliant!!

He wasn’t the only one far stiffer after last night’s performance and result!
