’We didn’t have the team last season but he’s (Holden) going to build a team to meet that objective (promotion)’
Presumably Hector’s decision to sign early is partly based on assurances that we’re going to have a go this year. Let’s hope he and Holden haven’t been sold any flannel by the new owners, and Holden is actually given the resources and freedom to build a promotion-winning squad.
Hector is an excellent addition, I have no qualms really about a one year deal - gives both parties the flexibility that if we got promoted to turn that maybe into a 2yr extension or something.
As for what's next , from what's being linked with El Mizouni it's clear we want a box to box energetic midfielder to complement Dobbo and Fraser , and obviously we badly need to address the fullback positions - whether that's another move for Tayo Edun or not obviously remains to be seen. Would be surprised if we're signing anyone on loan yet purely because clubs won't be making decisions on that kind of thing this early unless it's a U23 player from a Prem side.
Are people really seriously talking about relegation 2 months before the window shuts and in week 1 of pre season?????
go into pre season with this squad isn't great but we have time.
go into the season with this squad and we will be looking over our shoulder.
even with this poor squad, we are still better than the promoted teams, port vale, Cambridge etc.
chill people, you will make yourselves ill.
Do you really believe that even with the current poor squad we are better than the promoted teams and better than others like Port Vale? If so then wow.
Yes. As I said, 6 weeks to go until jim white evening!
I've just received a message saying hector has signed. I'm not sure if it's been posted yet on here yet as this is the first message I've seen and read. In a space of an hour, our squad has been massively improved.
if we play 4 at the back, our centre backs are hector, ness, Thomas and either Mitchell or elewere (spelling). You believe that Carlisle centre backs options are better than that? How about Cambridge, how about orient?
a midfield 3 of Dobson, frazer and mcgrandles is a good league 1 trio. Not saying it's good enough for promotion but definitely better than the 4 promoted teams can put out.
if you honestly believe Carlisle are stronger than us then I see your wow and raise you with a double wow.
I don’t know if we are better than Carlisle but there’s nothing about our team than can be viewed as exciting . I’m pleased with Hector and Thomas re-signing but we are woefully short . JRS papered over a lot of cracks last season and we still only finished mid table
I never said the team is exciting. I was pointing out that the small (same bunch every day, every thread) who are talking unnecessarily and stupidly about relegation when the window is open for another 6 weeks that we are better than teams in this league and willl not go down.
we still have a mid table first team, which will be improved. Dubai said there is a possibility of another in today. The squad is being rebuilt although slower than most want to see but signings are incoming. People just need to chill, enjoy the hot weather and wait and see what happens
Never understand the meltdown people have when we ‘miss out’ on a player we were never in for
You are playing it down here, we absolutely were in for him. It's a bit different from the usual meltdown when we lose out to another club to a player we didn't actually bid for, this is completely different.
That was a player that is a top player in the league, who was available and we could have got and it looks like may go to a team in the league below. This is an occasion where people are in their rights to meltdown.
Perhaps we should save the melt downs for if and when it’s ‘has gone’.
Great news about Hector. Icing on the cake would have been a two year deal, but with all the uncertainty around I’ll settle for one.
Thomas is a decent back up, but would like to see us sign a proper left back.
Ness returning to the level he was at before his injury is key for the defence, as is Egbo staying injury free.

Isn't the May thing with Gillingham, if it happens, a statement by the owners, equivalent to when Hulyer bought Simonsen, obviously at a much different standard, but a marquee signing for them nonetheless
Let's look on the bright side, once our takeover completes, we might be looking to make one of those ourselves, although what's left on the shelves by then who knows. Need to think outside the box, well the black one anyway😉
He wouldn’t put pen to paper without some assurances about future incomings, would he?
Clutching at straws I know… :-)
That's why he only signed for a year. No real assurances or so undecided he took the shortest deal going.
Not a great show of faith is it. Last 2 signings, both who played here last season so "know the club", sign for just 12 months.
Sats so much about us as a club don't uiu think. Out of interest (and I generally don't kniw) have any other league 1 players this June signed on for just a year ??
Don't think I've ever seen that happen in the summer transfer window.
I don't think it's that. Far more likely is he played 8 games in two and a half years and then had an ok, visibly unfit 17 games in League One in an average team. He's probably above our level and pay but other offers weren't forthcoming because he hasn't been able to show enough to get more. A one year deal for him on less than he'd like gives him the chance to get more. If he's great and we go up he can get a Championship wage with us. If he's great and we don't go up a Championship team will come in for him. A player of his pedigree signing a one year deal for us makes perfect sense for him regardless of who owns us, and for us getting him even for a year is a good thing
Makes sense except we were continually told he had Championship offers.
Were we? I don't remember hearing about any Championship offers, certainly not this window. I remember hearing about Championship interest but I never heard of anything materialising from that. I think that's why he's signed early, nothing forthcoming and possibly hearing from higher level teams that they need to see him fit and playing more before they'll be willing to go for him. Here's his chance.
A good signing - we have six weeks to the first league game so he has plenty of time to get fit and have a proper pre-season, last season he looked a bit knackered by the season end, unsurprising since he missed the first half of the season and had hardly played first team football for a couple of years prior to that.
He brings a bit of character and that he took a few weeks to sign on suggests he was possibly talking to one or two other clubs.
I hope he can pass on some experience to Lucas Ness.
We how have a defence for Welling: Egbo-Ness-Hector-Thomas. We just need a bit of depth...
Will probably be a different eleven each half. Lavelle and Chin will likely appear in defence also.

Window don’t shut till end of Aug like every year players don’t become available till last few weeks of that window as SG said many times we have our targets but we have to be patient in getting them ..
sorry but this just isn’t true. Maybe for the prem loans but good players move whenever. Pompy Ipswich and Peterborough have all signed good players. This line about ‘waiting’ for the top targets is a load of rubbish - if a club is serious they will pay the money to get their targets and business done
we have swapped an experienced goalie for a relatively inexperienced one we have lost Sess our LB and only have a CB as his replacement we have swapped Clare for Manny so our defence and mid field defence is the same as the end of last season averaging a 2 goal concede a game we have lost our top goal scorer and have a couple of untried youngsters as current replacements we have a proved goalscorer when he is fit but no-one seems to know if he is ready for a full season

I must have missed the announcement that the season is now starting tomorrow and we're playing Orient
Still much work to be done. GK ✔️ Defence ✖️ Midfield / Wings ✖️ Attack ✖️ Still plenty of time and Hectors comments are encouraging but he would say that wouldn’t he.

1 x RB 1 x CB 1 x LB 1 x CM 1 x CAM 1 x LW 1 x RW 1 x ST
3 out and 8 in sounds about right?
Would probably get 2 Right wingers instead of the left winger as Campbell and CBT both prefer the left. I think we need 2 strikers as Leaburn is quite injury prone and we can’t rely on Chuks
Ideally get 2 left backs as well but that may be less likely, so hopefully we get Sessegnon as the RB so Thomas is down to 3rd choice LB

Why would he say it (or sign) if it wasn't true?
No better offers on table ? Enjoyed his brief spell with us ? Happy with location ? Naively listened to what Holden said to him ? Decided playing 3very week was better than being on bench in Championship ? I’m sure there are more reasons.

I imagine that you are about right in terms of positions but maybe not the numbers - I would think at least a few players will be bought in to cover multiple roles - similar to Thomas as cover at LB and CB, probably a player who can play "across the front line" in multiple positions and maybe a utility midfielder too.
I personally would prefer to have specialist players in every role but pragmatism and financial sense suggest that is probably not on the cards across the entire squad.

Don't quite get that about Leaburn being "injury prone", the sort of phrase you might well use with Chuks, but not Leaburn, who has just completed his first season, agree he suffered a bit last few games, and was maybe overplayed a bit due to team selection options, but injury prone...🤷♂️

Maybe susceptible to injury is a better phrase. He was out for a couple of periods last season missing about 10 games in total, completely understandable at his age but left us light with just Bonne to come in.
I don't agree with a lot Golfie has to say, but he has a point, one year deal for Hector is disappointing...
One year deal is worse than a two year deal but that’s as far as I’d go.
In contrast a one year deal is better than no deal at all, it’s better than a rival signing him, it’s better than a championship side signing him, he’s better than Inniss, he proved end of last season he was more than good enough.
I don't agree with a lot Golfie has to say, but he has a point, one year deal for Hector is disappointing...
Maybe. But even so it's still better than the alternative which currently would put our "senior"/first choice CB pairing as Ness and Lavelle. I think we can agree that would be slightly worse than "disappointing!"
cks as well but that may be less likely, so hopefully we get Sessegnon as the RB so Thomas is down to 3rd choice LB

Was he injury prone or were the coaching staff deliberately not overplaying him in his first season?
A lot of young players get overplayed and suffer continual injury problems through their careers. Charlton do seem to have a policy of introducing players young but then not playing them week in/week out. I wonder whether the coaching team were just being careful with a player who's still growing and filling out.

We play Welling tomorrow, can joke all we want but that's where the season starts so we are ready for our opening game.
It really is groundhog day, all the posts on this thread are identical year after year.
We don't sign any of the best performers in the league while rival clubs will and while they do there will be such posts as 'We were never in for him' or 'Most clubs aren't doing business right now'
The clubs who are serious either have their squad ready now or are adding players.
We have the shittest recruitment team in the whole of the EFL in terms of our stature, I am absolutely adamant on that.
Our signings will be, a left back on loan, a winger on loan, a midfielder on loan, one of the three will be our best player like the loans usually are, we will sign cast offs no one else wants and they will be billed as players we have wanted by our pony recruitment team.
We will probably finish in the region of 9th to 14th. Might sack our manager along the way, lose our loans and our players that have one year left and then do it all again next season.
For every player we sign, that isn't crocked, an ex player or someone who is championship/higher end league 1 quality (loans not included) I will donate a tenner to the upbeats

3 full backs

5 of them have to be better than what we have already got.
(But tbf I copied and pasted the quote.)
so those for starters plus left backs I’d say.
