Patrick Casey signs a 3-year pro contract

Old school centre forward. You hardly see him and then out of nowhere he has scored. A fine start for the young man, who never got a run earlier this season at Maidstone.

New 1-2 year deal and a 6 month loan in the National League I would expect?fenaddick said:0 -
Surprised he’s been offered one2

Think that’s the right thing to do. He got injured whilst our player and should be given the chance to rehabilitate, return from that injury and then see where that takes us. I’d imagine it’ll be something along the lines of a year plus a further year option in our favour in case he does progress sufficiently. He’s been unlucky with injuries if I recall and that hasn’t allowed him to progress as expected. Not his fault. It’s not as if it’s going to eat into our budget.fenaddick said:11 -
Probably won’t make it with us long term but wages are low so not much of a risk. Has an eye for goal at the youth and on his most recent non league loan. Not mention with all the u21 releases, we do need to fill a squad even with some of u18s stepping up0
-
Not sure if it would apply to Casey. But I think the club would get a small payment if he signs elsewhere so long as he has been offered a contract.Crispywood said:Surprised he’s been offered one4 -
There are some fantastic names in our youth teams: Paris Lock. Rubein Reid. Lennon MacLorg. Phoenix Valentine. They all sound like champion boxers.fenaddick said:4 -

He’s a young guy who has proven he knows where the net is. Amazed some fans willing to give up on him so easy. Once through injury he may grow into the pro goalscorer we hoped for.10

Dorking were almost guaranteed promotion with him, if not the title, without him they didn't even make the final play off.Crispywood said:Surprised he’s been offered one6 -
Seems to score goals at whatever level he plays at. Definitely worth a new contract and loan him to the national league to see how he gets on.Crispywood said:Surprised he’s been offered one5 -
I’m really glad they’ve offered him a new deal
I watched him at Dorking - hes just a goal machine - I think it’s conceivable that he ends up playing at a decent level in the EFL4 -
I get that but the fact is he’s 20 and played NLS football at best. If we’ve done it to get some sort of tribunal fee then fair enough, but Id be very surprised if he ever gets good enough to make our squad.Dazzler21 said:

Goal scorers are rare beasts. At 20 having been injured for a good chunk of last season worth giving more time to see if he can develop.5

He's 20 of course the majority of his career so far has been NL. I definitely think he has something special with his finishing. Even if the rest of his game needs to mature.Crispywood said:

Writing the lad off because he’s 20 is ridiculous. He’s a natural goalscorer who has scored at every level he’s been given the opportunity (lately 8 goals in 10 games for Dorking, who loved him) but also a couple of bad injuries. Let’s see how he recovers and what the club have planned for him…there were certainly suitors sniffing around when he initially turned pro with us and it wasn’t certain we’d be able to keep him.And never forget…Leicester didn’t pick Vardy up from non-league until he was 25! 🤷🏻♂️10

Think he far better goalscorer then Kanu and Mbick … would like to see him involved in the first team squad for pre season games …6

For every 1 Jamie Vardy you have 10,000 players who never make it. I’m not saying he won’t go on to have a good career and ever reach this level because he may well do but you can’t keep a player for 4/5 years on end hoping that one day they’re ready.TelMc32 said:Writing the lad off because he’s 20 is ridiculous. Really miffed by some of those that have written him off already? He scored a fair few in the youth set up and a shitload in a short space of time when we shipped him out on loan. What is he? 20?0 -

Being a great goalscorer it's worth giving him longer to develop but it's a huge gap to the Championship and younger players such as Mbick are ahead of him. He doesn't have great pace or strength which means he needs to find ways to make up for that with the rest of his game - his hold up and link play, decision making, work rate etc to go with his excellent finishing and goalscorers instinct.
As with Laqeretabua and Enslin he needs senior football at the right level as u21 football won't give him the tests he needs to develop.9 -
He's a bona fide goalscorer. He absolutely and *exclusively* understands what is being asked of him when it comes to scoring goals.

Could be worth the gamble?Crispywood said:

Well, of course - he's a very good finisher.
At his age he's still learning the game, especially needing to work on his link up play. But he's a natural goalscorer, prolific even, at his current experience level.
But to think because he's now 20 and not yet starring for our 1st team, he's unlikely to make the grade is a bit myopic.
For example, take our two most recent prolific strikers:
Alfie May, aged 24 before he even played a League game.
Matt Godden, at 25 was still playing non-League for Ebbsfleet.
He won't be good enough to be prolific for Coventry City or Charlton, of course.
And I mustn't even mention L*le T*yl*r 😊3 -
Or... how about a bloke called Mendonca?Oggy Red said:

No one is saying give him a 4-5 year deal, but we'd be foolish to write off a striker who scores goals whenever he plays.Crispywood said:

I'd imagine it'll be a 1-2 year deal and then we loan him out to a NL club for 6 months and see how he gets on. If he does well we can look at getting him a league two loan. I agree he's probably not likely to make it with us, but there are plenty of kids who are never ever going to make it at City and Chelsea. It doesn't stop them loaning them out for multiple seasons and then getting a transfer fee when they decide to sell.

Some fans are way too harsh on 20-year old players. It’s pretty obvious Casey is worth another deal and see where he can push himself in the next year or so.6
-
Another way to look at it is if there was a young kid banging in goals for a local non-league team we'd be scouting him, potentially getting him in on trial, and if he scored in U21 games (as Casey usually does) we'd offer him a deal and then loan him out for experience.
If you put aside the fact he's already our player, i'm not really sure what the difference is?15 -
Maybe but some player develop later than others. If he does an Mbick and bangs a load in at L2 level next season then we will look like we have a real asset on our hands and he will only be 21.Crispywood said:

We have kept other youngsters on who have never really done it at senior level because we see promise and they are older than Casey.
Also its not much of a risk as I am sure we arent paying huge amounts.2
