Must be awkward being Switzerland, given our last two penalty shootout wins have come against them... The last being in the Nations League Finals.
I mean, imagine losing twice on pens, against a team that are infamous for them
That's one thing I'll give Southgate credit fir, he's clearly worked on penalties - didn't ignore the issue and worked om the psychology of them etc.
We've got from losing 7 out 8 before he arrived to winning 3 from 4.
Shame the one loss cost us a title but he's improved us on pens without a doubt.
Thankfully we've only had to deal with Donnarumma the once, he's the one bloke standing in goal for a penalty that makes me think he's saving everything.
i'm just going to put this out there; 3 THREE major semi finals now for Southgate; Bobby Robson and Tel Venables over achieved to get us to one, Eriksson et al squandered our last "golden generation" with none. But 3? At some point no matter how boring we are, no matter how "shit" we play or draws going for us... you gotta say thats pretty good and deserves respect.
I garauntee one day, perhaps decades from now we will be looking back and whistfully saying "in the southgate days"
I won’t.
We are getting to these semi finals / finals DESPITE Southgate - not because of him.
Nor me. You're 100% right, were in the semi-final again despite him.
And never forget that final against Italy was in the bag until the fool Southgate went all defensive.
How when we lose is it one thing, and when we win another? - The excuses that people make like this are ludicrous sorry!! - Simply because you don't want to be wrong?
He didn't tell the defence to switch off for the Swiss goal, or was I missing something when that happened?
As Napoleon said, give me a lucky general, not a good one.
When Switzerland hit the post in the last minute from a corner, that was luck.
And Southgate is a truly lucky manager.
But the thing is, Southgate creates the conditions for us to be lucky. It’s not by accident that we’re always one moment of inspiration or brilliance away from drawing level or taking the lead. It’s a trudge a lot of the time but this England team don’t go two goals behind, they don’t need a miracle with 30 seconds to go. They need one moment and the worst that can happen is that they get a point or they take a game to penalties. He’s done away with the English hoodoo over that and this time he’s managed to put together a squad where there’s at least 4 players who are their team’s chosen penalty taker.
There’s luck and then there’s being so ‘lucky’ that you’ve got to three semifinals in 6 years when every other England team has consistently failed and failed badly for 60 years
But when everything is said and done you cannot argue with his record. History tells us that since 66 we had a semi final in 1990 and a semi final in 1996...........and that was it. TWO semi finals in 50 YEARS!! Now this guy has got us to 3 in just 6 years.
Of course you can argue with his record.
He’s not burdened by Carlton Palmer, Steve Hodge, Geoff Thomas etc from the last 50 years.
he should have done better with the players at his disposal.
We would never have lost that Euro final if Mancini was our manager.

If you have arguably the best squad in the tournament I don't see why you should be going life and death with Slovakia and 1-0 down until the 93rd minute.
Maybe that's just me, but feel like 'we're in a tournament' shouldn't hide the fact we're struggling against teams much worse than we are.
I can accept a poor performance or two, I was happy after the Slovakia game. But the fact Southgate just isn't making ANY (unforced) changes whatsoever when it's shown we've been poor for 4 straight games is just deluded management.
In 90 minutes we've drawn with: Denmark, Slovenia, Slovakia and Switzerland.
In FIFA rankings they're 19th, 21st, 45th and 57th.

It’s because we’ve had some runs in tournaments of being drawn against sides that are below us in rankings and don’t have anywhere near the talent we have at our disposal, who can’t take full advantage against us.
I’m coming across an old moaner, I screamed and punched the air as much as everyone when we won. I think Southgate is a good man with little ego, but I’m bored with how he sets up his teams and I’m fed up we went into this tournament with him as manager. The cycle had run its course and we were / are ready for change. If we shithouse this then fantastic but we’ve a squad that should be playing so much better than it is.
Southgate has done a lot more than than just make us better at penalties. He’s made us a solid defensive team that is hard to beat, despite our defence being widely seen as our biggest weakness. He’s changed the whole atmosphere around the camp which used to be full of cliques and club rivalries, and he’s made it normal for England to get to and past the quarter finals of major tournaments.
The trouble is, there is always that nagging sense that there is a bit more to be extracted from the team/squad and if he doesn’t win something that will probably be how he is remembered. But it’s never been a straightforward as he is just a bad or just a good manger, there needs to be more nuance than that when you judge his tenure.

Do you need the definiton of fluke?
He “creates the conditions for us to be lucky’.
Given the resources - he should be creating the conditions for us to be controlling games and beating ‘lesser’ teams more comfortably.

We've played the last 4 games with the same set-up and learned nothing from them. The performance improved slightly today but yet again we're ponderous going forward and only have one wing.
It's something that was picked up in the first game and 4 games later Southgate hasn't made any changes.
We're scraping by against teams much worse than us because we have zero attacking threat. It isn't 'good gameplanning', it's a crap set-up with zero imagination.

you can say that without slagging off our current team that are still active in a tournament. Apparently if you aren't winnng 3-0 every game or knocking the ball about like Brazil in the 70's it aint allowed. We are in the semi finls of an interational tournament - enjoy it!

Southgate's history in tournaments are great on a results basis. This tournament we are crap and limping through against poor opposition. Hopefully between now and Wednesday we have the serious changes that should have been made today.
Southgate has done very well, but his time in charge has coincided with a period when our fabulously rich PL clubs with their massively expensive academies are really churning out high quality technical players.
No coincidence that Germany's best young player Musiala came spent many years in our system.
St. George's Park has also played an under-rated factor.
Clairefontaine (in France) opened in 1988, and France reached their first World Cup Final ten years later, of course winning it.
SGP was opened in 2012, and we came to within a penalty shootout of winning a tournament within the same sort of time frame as the French.

But the fact Southgate just isn't making ANY chances whatsoever when it's shown we've been poor for 4 straight games is just deluded management.
In 90 minutes we've drawn with: Denmark, Slovenia, Slovakia and Switzerland.
In FIFA rankings they're 19th, 21st, 45th and 57th.
lol FIFA world rankings.
watch Belgium in this tournament.
Watch Georgia.
Compare.
More interested in watching us.
We've played the last 4 games with the same set-up and learned nothing from them. The performance improved slightly today but yet again we're ponderous going forward and only have one wing.

that got us to a euro sem final.
for only the third time in our history (second under southgate)
Just in case you forgot.
edit; also - you brought up world rankings not me
Last Euros tournament under Southgate:
Played 7 Won 5 Drew 2 Lost 0
Goals 11 Conceded 2
This tournament:
Played 5 (so far) Won 2 Drew 3
Goals 5 Conceded 3

Southgate's history in tournaments are great on a results basis. This tournament we are crap and limping through against poor opposition. Hopefully between now and Wednesday we have the serious changes that should have been made today.

We've got from losing 7 out 8 before he arrived to winning 3 from 4.
Shame the one loss cost us a title but he's improved us on pens without a doubt.
he should have done better with the players at his disposal.
Do you need the definiton of fluke?

No coincidence that Germany's best young player Musiala came spent many years in our system.
We have continued to win no major tournaments with (possibly) our most talented group of players.
you can say that without slagging off our current team that are still active in a tournament. Apparently if you aren't winnng 3-0 every game or knocking the ball about like Brazil in the 70's it aint allowed. We are in the semi finls of an interational tournament - enjoy it!

Clairefontaine (in France) opened in 1988, and France reached their first World Cup Final ten years later, of course winning it.
SGP was opened in 2012, and we came to within a penalty shootout of winning a tournament within the same sort of time frame as the French.
so yeah?
