If you have arguably the best squad in the tournament I don't see why you should be going life and death with Slovakia and 1-0 down until the 93rd minute.
Maybe that's just me, but feel like 'we're in a tournament' shouldn't hide the fact we're struggling against teams much worse than we are.
I can accept a poor performance or two, I was happy after the Slovakia game. But the fact Southgate just isn't making ANY chances whatsoever when it's shown we've been poor for 4 straight games is just deluded management.
In 90 minutes we've drawn with: Denmark, Slovenia, Slovakia and Switzerland.
In FIFA rankings they're 19th, 21st, 45th and 57th.

We've played the last 4 games with the same set-up and learned nothing from them. The performance improved slightly today but yet again we're ponderous going forward and only have one wing.
It's something that was picked up in the first game and 4 games later Southgate hasn't made any changes.
We're scraping by against teams much worse than us because we have zero attacking threat. It isn't 'good gameplanning', it's a crap set-up with zero imagination.

that got us to a euro sem final.
for only the third time in our history (second under southgate)
Just in case you forgot.
Or…….
We have continued to win no major tournaments with (possibly) our most talented group of players.
I say it again…..we would have won at least one of these tournaments with a better manager than GS.
So why didnt we win a Tournament with a better Manager? - I mean we've had plenty before Southgate, and didnt get close to a Semi-Final, and with better squads.
Citation needed. Especially comparing to our rival's squads.
I mean England now aren't the best in the world, when you compare our Squad against the likes of Spain / France - We've all got some amazing talent coming through.
Same with during the "Golden Generation" - But apart from a handful of players (notably the defence), I wouldnt pick many from this England team, compared to that one.
Southgate has done a lot more than than just make us better at penalties. He’s made us a solid defensive team that is hard to beat, despite our defence being widely seen as our biggest weakness. He’s changed the whole atmosphere around the camp which used to be full of cliques and club rivalries, and he’s made it normal for England to get to and past the quarter finals of major tournaments.
The trouble is, there is always that nagging sense that there is a bit more to be extracted from the team/squad and if he doesn’t win something that will probably be how he is remembered. But it’s never been a straightforward as he is just a bad or just a good manger, there needs to be more nuance than that when you judge his tenure.
Better atmosphere in the camp ? You seriously think the camp is happy ? I would be amazed if it is when he is repeatedly picking some players that just are not performing ahead of others in the squad like Kane, Foden Trippier etc Palmer made a massive difference when he came on how do you think he will feel when he is benched again on Wednesday ? Southgate doesn’t play form players he plays reputations and he has a plan which he doesn’t have the aptitude to change it when it isn’t working unless it is forced upon him. The way we finished the last 15 minutes today after going a goal down compared to how we played so negative in extra time can only be down to his instructions before extra time

Same with during the "Golden Generation"
The Golden Generation wasn't all that and has been overrated because of their celebrity.
The lack of European performance in those years from the English clubs at the time shows we weren't at the level of our European peers like Italy, Germany or Spain.
The last 8 years has been some of the greatest squads that England have ever had. Especially this one with Bellingham, Saka, Rice, Stones, Walker, Kane etc.
i'm just going to put this out there; 3 THREE major semi finals now for Southgate; Bobby Robson and Tel Venables over achieved to get us to one, Eriksson et al squandered our last "golden generation" with none. But 3? At some point no matter how boring we are, no matter how "shit" we play or draws going for us... you gotta say thats pretty good and deserves respect.
I garauntee one day, perhaps decades from now we will be looking back and whistfully saying "in the southgate days"
I won’t.
We are getting to these semi finals / finals DESPITE Southgate - not because of him.
Nor me. You're 100% right, were in the semi-final again despite him.
And never forget that final against Italy was in the bag until the fool Southgate went all defensive.
How when we lose is it one thing, and when we win another? - The excuses that people make like this are ludicrous sorry!! - Simply because you don't want to be wrong?
He didn't tell the defence to switch off for the Swiss goal, or was I missing something when that happened?
As Napoleon said, give me a lucky general, not a good one.
When Switzerland hit the post in the last minute from a corner, that was luck.
And Southgate is a truly lucky manager.
But the thing is, Southgate creates the conditions for us to be lucky. It’s not by accident that we’re always one moment of inspiration or brilliance away from drawing level or taking the lead.
It’s because we’ve had some runs in tournaments of being drawn against sides that are below us in rankings and don’t have anywhere near the talent we have at our disposal, who can’t take full advantage against us.
I’m coming across an old moaner, I screamed and punched the air as much as everyone when we won. I think Southgate is a good man with little ego, but I’m bored with how he sets up his teams and I’m fed up we went into this tournament with him as manager. The cycle had run its course and we were / are ready for change. If we shithouse this then fantastic but we’ve a squad that should be playing so much better than it is.
It’s not though, it’s because we’ve beaten the teams we’ve played against, which is the aim of football. Diminishing results because the team weren’t hard enough is pointless. And even when we do beat a good team like Germany they’re suddenly not good anymore anyway so what’s the point? I have a memory of Iceland, Uruguay, Costa Rica, Romania and plenty of other teams having enough talent to take advantage of us, we’ve just stopped letting them.
I think this has been Southgate’s worst tournament so far. He’s being stubborn, he’s seeing changes too late and he’s being very reliant on leaving the likes of Foden, Kane and Bellingham on in bad performances just in case they do something cool. I think we could be less reactive and change things earlier and I think this should be his last tournament because it’s got a bit stale but there’s 4 teams in the semifinal and three of them play based on brutal, uncompromising misery. Because it works
I've watched this about 10 times now and it still amazes me how he takes it like this with so much at stake. Don't think i've ever seen another player take a pen like this before.

I'm hoping we won't be talking about "the Southgate days" but I agree he deserves respect for making England a footballing force again. We were a laughing stock when he took over.
I reckon Steve Holland is the one running things and Nigel is just the face of it (I’m not sure Nigel realises it but Holland comes across like he’s behind everything)

Great post. I’m a big critic of the blokes lack of ability as a manager but he is a nice guy and obviously I hope England win the whole thing but if we do I also hope the FA aren’t stupid enough to keep him in post as a decent manager could win the next few tournaments with this group
It makes me sad to see the insults thrown at Southgate.
We’ll miss him when he’s gone.
Before he became manager were we more adventurous or more naive? Were we playing to our strengths or disorganised?
It’s not pretty but then so often the tournament winners are not the ones that attack and play ’wow football’. In the last euros were Italy really so impressive? What about Portugal before them?
All you moaners will look back when we become a soft touch again, and see that he created the strongest England of our lifetimes, whether we win this tournament or not.
I've banged on about this before, but for a man that was absolutely chastised for his poor penalty shootout performance in an international tournament. (It defined his international career FFS!) to go on and manage said international team and consistently be happy to lead them to the same fate is just f**king weird. I'm starting to really despise the bloke.
The Southgate plan has brought England more success in the last six years collectively than the team had seen in the past fifty years.
He should get a hell of a lot of credit for that achievement.
Unfortunately, this tournament, as much as I’ve defended him, he’s needed to adapt and make minor tweaks. Teams know the Southgate plan six years on and they’ve figured out their own ways to counter it. England are failing to counter the counter - luckily the tactic we’ve been drilled into means we continue to keep games tight and we’ve always got a chance.
I do think that the upcoming Nations League matches are a great chance for someone to impress their own ideas on this team. But those wishing for Guardiola or Klopp are going to be sorely disappointed when we end up with Lee Carsley or Frank Lampard.
Lame and our first real test of the tourney v the Dutch but we’re more than good enough to beat them if we get out of first gear for longer than 15 mins Spain v us is a coin flip to me because we can’t be shit forever , this may be a tourney too early for the Spanish so on that basis it’s coming home

First shot on target in 94th min against Slovakia. First shot on target in 80th against Switzerland. Going to be difficult to beat Holland when we are having 1 shot on target each match.
3 shots v Serbia 4 shots v Denmark 4 shots v Slovenia

I mean stats only paint one part of the story - Its only one example, but if Xhaka hadn't made an excellent challenge towards the end of the first half; Mainoo was making it 1-0

Spain have probably looked the best of the bunch
What is important is that we are finding ways to win in tournament football matches, even on penalties.
This was a Swiss side that beat Italy comfortably.
Netherlands will be another difficult game but then we are one result away from a 2nd European final in a row
Maybe this groups experience could help deliver as they’ve been through it before and tasted defeat.
Plus a final is also a different kettle of fish in terms of pressure.
