Was the change in formation / personnel because NJ is getting closer to knowing what team works best, specific to the opposition or forced by injury/form?
Yes of course the answer is a combination of all the above but do we expect the same or a different team next time out?
Compared to Tuesday night, that was as chalk to cheese, and whilst Tuesday was a great slab of the cliffs of Dover, today we saw a truckle of the finest farmhouse Cheddar, cave aged in a Welsh sleep mine.
A totally deserved win in which we neutralised "the best team in the division". Didn't allow them a single shot.
Kanu, Anderson, TC maybe young, they are not be the finished article but all three were a big part of the win and fully justified their places in the team.
Birmingham's fans were as quiet as their team, it was almost as if both just expected the goals and win to come but they were out thought by NJ and outfought and outplayed by Charlton.
Salute to Jones for changing the formation and players and it coming off.
No need to boo Alfie but the "Alfie, Alfie, What's the score?" chant at the end was funny.
Ramsay MOTM for me but there were a lot of contenders.
Why not? Yes done great for the club, Jones didn’t fancy him, but let’s not forget he wanted out as well.. He is no longer our player, and up against a team we want to compete with.. why would you club and sing his name in such a game!!
Godden finish today and the goals he has got so far, looks like half decent replacement.. we need to get out of May’s arse
You sound like Ronnie Moore Anyway nobody has suggested singing Alfie's name, Henry merely said no need to boo him & if it wasn't for his goals last year we wouldn't even be in this division so calm yourself down. May's arse ? Hmm whatever floats your boat.
Fantastic game. Much more like how we started the season.
Their support was awful. Maybe they just expect to turn up and win. No noise from them even when they went behind. Anyway all credit to Jones and the team. Need to maintain that level.
I know that Managers who are interviewed straight after a game can come out with some pretty daft statements but Nathan Jones comments today don't really add up. His assertion that fans are telling him who to pick is probably worth analysing. Nobody, and I will use this forum as an example, told him who to pick up until his non-sensical dropping of Mitchell against Blackpool, if he was right that day then why hasn't he used Mitchell's replacement, REG since. Also, he needs to look at the performance against Bristol Rovers and his selection that gave us our worst performance of the season, claiming that we only got beaten because Rovers scored two worldies is stretching it somewhat. I actually don't care who he picks as long as the team is winning, I also think Jones is a character who can divide fans and maybe his comments were taken out of context but facts are facts and before today we suffered three straight defeats and Jones played a role in those defeats with his selection.

It's all theatre! I'm sure any Charlton fans that booed him would thank him for last season if they were to see him in the car park
awesome performance and the correct choice of team and the man who scored should always be in the starting eleven we should have scored 3 today but the performance was magnificent 👌👌🤣
That was a fantastic performance today. For the whole 90 minutes they all played as a team. Huge kudos to Nathan Jones. Today was a masterclass. Now, let’s get some consistency.
Godden is starting to find his form. Plays well off a Kanu type who does all the running. Tyrese Campbell very strong when he came on and Allan Campbell made a difference in midfield. He didn’t stop scrapping all game. Docherty was immense. Being out for a few games woke him up I feel. Ramsay and Edwards very strong and Mitchell, Jones and Mannion solid at the back.
That’s more like it Charlton. I must admit I was beginning to have doubts about our squad and manager but today they were all superb. Now let’s push on.

Hope you don't mean Macros ? There's no need for that
Just saw the interview with Nathan Jones and being abused by Charlton Critics after the last few games still rankles, you feel if he was offered the Cardiff gig he would want to take it. Personally I wouldn't blame him.
Ironic that a good old fashioned formation helped the team negate the leaders and be on the front foot again a team that were winning every week. 10 games, and we are 8th yet if we had lost today we would have been 17th !
I really hope that we can stick to a formation that gets the best out of this team and if its a 4-4-2 then so be it. Short sighted of Daniel Kanu that he didn't slide the ball across to a team mate but he and Campbell both have legs and energy and pleased that was recognized on the players marks.
Bolton and Birmingham wins give cafc hope but the other 8 matches were a grind so are cafc a potential top 6 or a nailed on in mid table ? Hard to tell despite the 10 match post reached.
For all Kanu's rawness and lack of composure (and two poor misses) he was pivotal to that win, he did not stop running and pressing. Docherty and Anderson also worked incredibly hard, although Ramsey and Coventry were probably the standouts.
Agree with someone earlier who said we look better side with Docherty in it.
We had them pinned back all game and our centre backs just hoovered up the long balls. Credit to N Jones for that.
In truth I can't remember such a comfortable win.
Great atmosphere too, although it looked a little empty, east stand especially.
Very pleasing how we've won that. A few had suggested Jones might have lost the dressing room but I think that's quashed that. Energy and effort back to what we were expecting and we can actually play some football too. Hopefully that's the end of 3 at the back.

this isn't the thread for it..but when the fuck did this become a thing for us and why? In my 35 years that has NEVER been a thing associated with us - we always backed the players and the manager to the hilt. Has Roland jaded us as a fanbase so much?
I've been thinking for a while we would be better off trying a diamond midfield with the types of players we have and limited wide options. I hope we stick with it.

Came on here to say the same.
I've heard some of the post match comments made by Nathan and don't know who he is digging out ?? Himself ?? Everyone could see the recent problems & dropping Mitchell and then Ramsey were just 2 of them. And then there has been the 352 with no creativity so what did he expect. Today he changes it around and we look a lot better but then seems to be saying "don't tell me my job".
Hey Nathan......its not the fans wanting Mitchell and Ramsey dropped or to persist with an uninspiring 352. Stick to the formation & players used today and you wont go far wrong.
I think today will hopefully draw a line as to if whether we can perform at a higher level.
Ten games in is not really a lot of time to establish too much with only one transfer window behind us but, the ability to change tactical nous after three disappointing games was a good sign in my opinion and hopefully not only will we stay in touch but Nathan will get financial support in January.
Not sure though why Nathan was a bit vocal after the game about being abused during the week.... That wasnt abuse.. It was sheer bloody frustration.... However, if you want abuse then I suggest he asks Mickey Apples what he got from us when we were really peed off!
Anyway onwards and upwards and the boys should not doubt themselves after that.
Maybe I've missed it, I've not seen any unacceptable abuse of NJ. Yes there have been some upset supporters, but after 3 unacceptable performances, nothing you wouldn't expect. After Stevenage and Brizzle, did he expect the away fans to cheer him and the team off?

No but 3 performances (even in a row) doesn't mean - season over - i think as a collective we have some weird kind of PTSD about bad performances
Had absolutely nothing to do with it today. Didn't even watch it on the box. Bristol Rovers disappointed me so much and I was starting to get the usual season slump vibe. So today's fantastic result is quite clearly all down to me steering well clear.
I'm off to buy a season ticket for the Nigel's and will leave you all in peace.

Watch the interview: Jones was unhappy and it sounds like he got abuse at the match and on line after the Blackpool match because of Small being subbed early doors. He even mentioned that two weeks ago he was asked not to go to a Championship team (Cardiff ?)then he gets pelters after the 3 defeats.
I don't think Nathan Jones is thick skinned and he is a workaholic so he will take it to heart.
We need everyone on the same page: manager, coaches, players and fans alike to have any chance of top 6. Today was the best we can play against the favourites.

But todays clean sheet in the League equals the amount we kept across the entirety of last season.

Top three for clean sheets in League One in recent years have finished
1st, 4th, 7th
1st, 3rd, 9th
2nd, 7th, 10th
2nd, 3rd, 5th
1st, 2nd, 7th
