Just saw the interview with Nathan Jones and being abused by Charlton Critics after the last few games still rankles, you feel if he was offered the Cardiff gig he would want to take it. Personally I wouldn't blame him.
Ironic that a good old fashioned formation helped the team negate the leaders and be on the front foot again a team that were winning every week. 10 games, and we are 8th yet if we had lost today we would have been 17th !
I really hope that we can stick to a formation that gets the best out of this team and if its a 4-4-2 then so be it. Short sighted of Daniel Kanu that he didn't slide the ball across to a team mate but he and Campbell both have legs and energy and pleased that was recognized on the players marks.
Bolton and Birmingham wins give cafc hope but the other 8 matches were a grind so are cafc a potential top 6 or a nailed on in mid table ? Hard to tell despite the 10 match post reached.
Sorry the comments about NJ are LOB. Before today we lost three on the spin and the performances were worse than dire. Not all Jones’s fault obviously but he’s got to accept a lot of responsibility and he’s not above criticism. If after our last month he would want out because of some very justified criticism then I’d lose all rest for him.
I went to The Valley to see Charlton v Birmingham. No idea who that team in red were but by God they put in a great performance. I don’t recall Brum having a shot on target. Superb.
Me and the section next to the dug out got a right bollocking motivating speech from Small today, he sorted us out proper- good
Did anything specifc trigger that, or was he just incredibly pumped up?
Sorry it wasn't next to the dug out, I meant to type tunnel. I believe the noise of our crisps/tea slurping and good natured tutting was putting him off.
Actually he was really pumped and wanted a bit of support, I believe, which I hope we gave him.
Nathan Jones does need to get a thicker skin. This is football. You are going to get criticism after bad results especially when it gets to 3 on the trot. He does come over as being a bit of a baby sometimes. We as fans had a right to criticise after those games. Yes, we were superb today and Jones was a big reason for that but he was also a big reason for how we played in those other games. He says you can’t get too high when you win and too down when you lose. Well he as manager should take that on board.
Me and the section next to the dug out got a right bollocking motivating speech from Small today, he sorted us out proper- good lad!
Can you tell us what was said or at least a rough idea ?
I'm not sure, but " I say chaps I would be frightfully grateful if you could stop sitting on your hands, contribute some noise, and get involved- i'm working my nuts off here- or "C'MON!!" may have been the gist. it was refreshing to see a player that cared- all power to him! and I consider myself told!
What a win!! Fantastic result and a worthy performance.
What started out as another questionable lineup (A Campbell? Kanu?) and another change in formation to what most guessed would be a diamond.... Worked! Was expecting a very workman like, backs against the walls, hoof and run but nope! The box midfield, with Campbell and Anderson finally gave us a taste of what, I imagine, is what Jones has been wanting - the relentless pressing from the whole box, but mainly from the advanced 2 and Kanu really forced those errors out of Brum and gave up a few chances.
First half to second half, we pressed well, made our own chances, kept Brum quiet and scored a well taken goal, some individuals stepped up and some still looked a bit iffy but personal weakness were brushed over with a solid team performance.
Anderson and Campbell, a collective groan when we saw these two starting, Campbell was a strange one, made the joke in the match thread that he reached match fitness during the game, after he pinged off that shot he just came alive, got about well and layed off a few nice passes. Anderson was still pretty headless chicken but with a partner his faults dont stand out so much. Speaking of....
Playing the box midfield with 3 hustle and bustle types makes up for our lack of creativity, there was usually an easy option to pass to and pressing further up the pitch really forced those errors, weaker teams than Brum who cant pass around it as much will give up the ball plenty - either there and then or hoofing it down to Mannion. No, it wasn't beautiful free flowing football but it was a massive step up in, not just the previous 3 games, but the season so far as a whole. Honestly, wouldnt be too sad to see us line up and continue developing around that formation and play style.
We just played our best game of the season, against the best team in the division limiting them to nothing and handing them their first defeat. Hopefully we build on this result and dont let it become a one off "raise your game against them" types.
Special mention to Docherty playing his natural game was a big improvement out there, sometimes you dont need to reinvented the wheel, its perfection.
Extra special mention to Godden, lovely, intelligent striker. Just start him and rotate a partner.
Extra extra special mention to- Connor Coventry was everywhere today and at one point was the furthest player forward when closing down the Brum keeper, kept it tidy and ticking over. Fantastic performance.
Double extra special mention to Stansfiled, what an utter little cock, clearly thought he was gonna have the freedom of the pitch and couldnt handle being handled. HAHAHA.
As I was saying yesterday we are the ultimate up and down team, which is probably what attracts most of us. Please enjoy the ups as you can be sure a down will be along soon. Don't sack NJ either he seems to fit our personality perfectly.
I was particularly impressed by Edwards - he seems to understand the game extremely well and is rarely caught out of position - contrast with Small who was caught out of position defensively within a minute of coming on

Perhaps, but there are plenty here who could follow the same advice?

I thought Tyreece Campbell was the main reason for the improvement, he made them very nervous at the back with his running down the left, and turned them around. He took a fair few whacks for his effort from their no4 Klarer who he turned inside out.

I find it hard to fathom what he thought supporters would do after those defeats, 'carry on Nathan it will all come right in the end'. He got it spot on today and the players performed supremely well but this is Football and its about opinions. I think his comments may have been a reaction to pressure, because had we lost today, four straight defeats would have put his decisions further into the spotlight.

I genuinely think if we trusted the manager more, and trusted the process, then even after those defeats we wouldn't have been so harsh - we don't because of past experiences. we need as a fan base to get past that or we never will. look at how quick EVERYONE was to say he had lost the changing room last game - he hasn't .

Mitchell's performances this season might be going a bit under the radar. He doesn't put a foot wrong. A few times he received the ball in a dodgy situation and just put it out of play - all you need to do at this level. He's looking rock solid.

What a big Welsh baby. Three crap performances, abysmal crap performances, embarassing toe curlingly abysmal performances and he gets dogs abuse because it is his team. One great performance at home and everyone is licking his ball sack because it is his team!
Is he new to football and the morons that follow it? Me included of course.

Think people were suggesting that that was what it looked like, because it did look that way at points in the games. It was a bad spell for whatever reason, and now we're hopefully out of it.
I’m glad Ahadme was dropped. He needed taking out of the firing line and he’s now got to build back up his confidence and has a point to prove. He’ll get his chance again if he wants it enough. I still don’t think he’s a bad player.
but he cannot do what Kanu and TC did today he does not have the pace, and he not strong enough to do what Aneke does against defenders
I've been thinking for a while we would be better off trying a diamond midfield with the types of players we have and limited wide options. I hope we stick with it.
To me it looked less like a diamond and more like 4222 for much of the match. The defence looked better as a 4 because Ramsey and Edwards are better fullbacks than wingbacks. We still created few chances and any success this season looks like it will have to be based on 1-0 wins.

All in all, not a bad result really eh?
