The best players can adapt to all formats. The Aussies play plenty of white ball cricket.Addick Addict said:
One of the Rew brothers will probably be given a chance soon enough. That's not to say that there shouldn't be a place for Smith. He's better with the bat than he's shown here.AdTheAddicK said:Is Jamie Smith seriously England's best wicket keeping batsman?
That said, all the time we ensure that our players play 100 ball cricket rather than in the CC and the 50 over variety, we are going to carry on producing batters who want to go "biff, bang, wallop" whatever the quality of the opposition or situation in the game.
I think a major issue is the super relaxed nature of the England management. Yes it's good to make it a fun environment, with players playing their natural game, BUT you also need discipline. After the self inflicted dismissals in Perth, they needed to tell the batsmen to knuckle down and cut out some of those " getting out" shots. Practice defence and leaving wide ones, preferably in the middle, not banter nets.
It's so easy for the Aussie bowlers, as they know they'll be gifted wickets.
The Aussies play a lot more red ball too. All bar Khawaja played in the round of Sheffield Shield matches before the Ashes and this was whilst Australia were in the middle of a white ball series against India which only Inglis was selected for.
Labuschagne hit five hundreds in the two months prior to the Ashes and he played club cricket too. The likes of Crawley, Jacks, Cox, Bethell and Livingstone have all been picked because of the way they bat in white ball. Bethell and Livingstone barely play in the CC let alone turn out for their club.
Leaving a ball becomes a habit. Recognising a ball that's moving and seaming too becomes a habit too. But only if you are in that zone and used to facing that type of ball and bowling. Who are our Strauss, Cook and Trott, our top three the last time we won in Australia?
As for the coach telling the batters to knuckle down, there is a school of thought from many within the game that McCullum and Stokes aren't doing that because that would be an admittance that Bazball, even a refined version of it, has its faults. They will justify the way we play when we next thrash a team inside two days, even if that happens to be Ireland, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka etc etc.

Hey, come on everyone. We beat the lesser teams at home though.1
-
So Jacks and Stokes quick counter attacking tons. 50s for Atkinson and Carse. Then bowl at them under lights with a new ball. All out 150. Jobs a good'un2
-
Agreed. Our bowling hasn't been great, some wrong lines and lengths in there and missing a bowler who can take it away from the right hander, but generally as good as I think we could have expected. It's our batting that has been poor. Not completely outclassed but completely out thought. Haven't read the game situations at all. We have had platforms and chances in both games but haven't used them at all. Just feels like a massive missed opportunity.Laddick01 said:The worst part is, that outside of Stark, no Aussie has really been that good.Imagine if Smith was firing. Labuschagne. Imagine they had Cummins or Hazelwood. We are a really poor, mindless cricket team from top to bottom and I can’t see past a 5-00 -
You've either just got home from the pub, are under the influence of something hallucinogenic or are "sleep-typing".cantersaddick said:So Jacks and Stokes quick counter attacking tons. 50s for Atkinson and Carse. Then bowl at them under lights with a new ball. All out 150. Jobs a good'un
The one thing you might have got right is the "All out 150". That'll be us.1 -

Are we all sitting comfortably. How long will we last.....a day ? A session ? An hour ? An over ?
I'm saying it will all be over within the first session. Will probably get a small lead but over before 6am our time.0 -
162-6 at drinks and just 15 runs behind. Some very sensible and unlike England batting from Stokes and Jacks.0
-
Going at just over 2 an over. Stil in deficit means at that rate we'll need 100 overs to set them a target we could defend.
We might still be batting by dinner tomorrow 😂0 -
Australia have set the leg trap so Stokes flat bats one back meaning that Doggett has to chase the ball to the boundary off his own bowling for three runs. Not something you ever see in Test cricket.0

The slow over rate means that the extra 30 mins is always taken before close of play. In a day/night test that massively favours the bowling side as they will be making up the overs when its harder to bat.
Needs looking at by the ICC.1 -
177-6, scores level so Australia are going to have to bat once again!0
-
Scores are level! For no further loss!
They are waiting for the rest of the country to wake up for the collapse.3 -

Meanwhile, the Lions are 172-3 in their second innings against Australia A. Bethell is taking a leaf out of the book of Stokes and Jacks in being 59* off 123 balls. Whisper the name but Asa Tribe, a 21 year-old from Jersey who hit 222 in an innings for Glamorgan against Northants in the CC last season, is currently 76* (98).0
-
Lyon is spotted glaring with combination of envy and anger from the sidelines as Head is brought on to bowl.0
-
Swiftly followed by Labuschagne bowling from the other end his seam up rather than his leg spin.0
-
And that graphic does my head in.
"Leads by x runs"
A country is a plural. So it should be..."England lead by x runs".
If it was a single person, like in golf, then it can be......."Rory McIlroy leads by 2 shots".1 -
193-6 (59) at the end of the first session for a lead of 16. We've just proven that we can occupy the crease if we want to do so during what is the first wicketless session of the series.
Stokes 36* (112)
Jacks 25* (66)0 -
Wow.
A whole session without losing a wicket.
If only the openers could do that.0 -

I set my alarm for 6:30, assuming it would be all over and I could go back to sleep

Bethell out for 71 (154) but Tribe is still going well on 104* (152)Addick Addict said:Meanwhile, the Lions are 172-3 in their second innings against Australia A. Decided on option 1. Stayed up all night but now starting to flag. I thought we wouldn't last the session & I would be in bed asleep by now.
Can never rely on England 🙄3 -
I set my alarm for 4.30. @cantersaddick might get a bit of a nice surprise when he finally surfaces at 10.00 to find that we still haven't lost a wicket but more so from the unlike Bazball methodology in achieving that.cantersaddick said:So Jacks and Stokes quick counter attacking tons. 50s for Atkinson and Carse. England showing they CAN play gritty cricket. Such a shame we had to wait so long for this.
Jacks making selection for the next Test very interesting.1 -
Im very late to test match cricket. But this is why I love it.
The first morning of the series, I didn't bother waking up for. Yet was probably our best and most sensible1 -
Jacks is certainly not a long-term solution for our spin issues but I just don't see how Bashir now gets a game in this series. Bashir has 87 FC wickets at 49.42 and is a number 11 whereas Jacks has 49 FC wickets at 42.22 and has demonstrated that he has the temperament to influence the course of a game here with the bat. Bashir, in returning 2-264 on this tour, has also somewhat dispelled the myth that the hard, bouncy tracks, given his high point of delivery, would suit.

The irony of all this being is that if these two do manage to miraculously post a score , they are probably the two we will most be relying on to take most of the wickets!0
-
A dozen overs to the new ball. Stokes and Jacks have batted brilliantly as a partnership but do they carry on as they are and try then to see off that new ball too?
220-6 (67)0 -
Unbelievable waking up to this
just presumed all done …. No one moves and that includes you Golfie cos it’ll be your fault if anything goes wrong …
Shit I shouldn’t have woken up !2
