I always thought he was an honest and likeable guy....sorry it didn't work out for him and us but let's be honest, we don't have much of a crop of players right now (and indeed haven't for some time), so I don't think anyone could have or will do much better.
The media has been pretty relentless for ages and it's very difficult (verging nigh on impossible in fact) in the current climate stirred up to be almost a national sport by Fleet Street for anyone to manage the England team.
