Also why are ghosts always clothed? Surely they'd be naked... Your clothes aren't alive after all.

So to all those saying ghosts exist do you accept aliens exist?

    That's much more likely.

I think both are a possibility, aliens more of a certainty, not that I believe they zoom around in space ships.

I never believed in ghosts until 2 years ago, lived in a house that was spooky beyond belief.

  • Charlton House

Charlton House is a beautiful Jacobean mansion in South East London. It was purchased by Greenwich Council in 1925, and plays host to wedding receptions and community groups. In the grounds is a mulberry tree, said to be the first in Britain. It was planted in 1608 on the order of King James I. A summer house also stands in the grounds, nowadays overlooking the road at the corner of the Charlton Village. It is said to have been designed by Inigo Jones, and was built 1630. It was converted to a public lavatory in 1938! Over the years sightings of ghosts have been reported at Charlton House. Staff have found their belongings mysteriously moved, porters have heard the lift going up and down on its own and a grey lady carrying a bundle which looks like a baby has been seen by visitors walking in the grounds towards the walled garden. Some of the paranormal activity is belived to be caused by Sir William Langhorne, who bought the house and it's grounds in 1680 and married a 17-year-old bride from Charlton Village. Sir William Langhorne and his brother (who also lived in the mansion) were well-known womanisers and despite William’s old age (he was 80 when he married) he was desperate to have a child to inherit the wealth he had built up as an East Indian merchant. He died in 1715, two months after the wedding, but before his wife had conceived. It is believed he still haunts the grounds in the hope of finding a fertile bride.

For those that do believe in ghosts, why are you scared of them? What do you think they are going to do to you?
Do you believe chucking a table at you will be their one unresolved issue and once they've done that they can move on?

To be honest there is a way that ‘ghosts’ could exist, according to Stephen hawking.

There is an idea in theoretical physics that says that there are many dimensions (something like 24!) in addition to the 4 we understand (3 dimensions plus time). The dimensions would all be curled up into a ‘matrix’ The theory stats that the different dimensions could sometimes touch leaving events from one visible from another.

This explains how ‘ghosts’ could happen. What’s more is that noone has been able to disprove the theory.

I got this from a Stephen Hawking book. Very interesting though I didn’t really understand the details.

So anyone who says that there cannot be ghosts should provide evidence of this fact, in the same way that people should provide proof ghosts if they believe that they do exist.

The answer is that nobody can know.

Surely the onus is on proving theories?

Yes. But just because we don't have proof of something doesn't mean that it doesn't occur. Just means that we can't or haven't proved it yet.

What I really meant is that none of us on here can really know either way.

I reckon that Scooby and Shaggy were seeing things because they had been smoking too much weed! That explains the munchies at least.

But we must make reasoned assessments based on science and logic. But it is more correct to state that it is extremely unlikely that ghosts exist.

I'd agree with that for sure. And I don't personally believe that they are 'spirits'. But I don't think that there is a case for ruling out the possibility entirely, that people may be seeing something that they interpret as 'ghosts'.

What would be acceptable as 'proof' of them not existing? The same way as noone can 'prove' there is no God. You can only point to the fact that no reliable evidence can be found in their favour. What would believers be satisfied with?

It can be 'proven' that aliens may exist by the fact that we know there are many millions of planets that we have not identified and many which we can not get near enough to know what is on them. We canalso prove through science that life-supporting planets are more than likely.

You can not do the same with something that is not likely to be proven.

I find it slightly irritating that some have to take the piss out of those who believe in this. There are better minds than everyone on here put together who think there is something beyond the life we know. As I said before, I’m on the fence when it comes to this, but each to their own eh?

aliens or other life forms have to exist to say we are the only planet in the entire void of space is crazy, we dont even know where space ends there must be thousands if not millions of planets out there that have 'lifeforms' just we dont have the techonolgy to travel these distance and i doubt we will in my and prob even my sons life time, unless they come to us first and share the info. but to be fair any 'intelligent life' out there would take one look at earth and think f that shitehole, there was a briliant episode of southpark so totally summed up earth and what would happen if we made contact will try to find it.

At the moment, the science of probability suggests there is very likely to be life on other planets. Science also suggests that it is extremely unlikely that we will be able to visit them or them visit us if we did find aliens. Just too big a distance between us.

i read that apparently its highly likely that an intelligent life outside of this earth existed or will exist after we vanish. However, due to the age of the universe, as you said, its highly unlikely they're existing at the same time as us and able to visit us.
