England need to 're-build' after another fiasco .. the batting should not be a problem with care and forethought .. Vince, Roy, Billings, Root, Buttler, Lyth, Lees, Taylor .. all it needs is the courage and foresight to pick a few and stick with them as the selectors have stuck with a few no hopers and not good enoughs over the past few years .. the trouble is the bowling .. I don't see a lot of 1st class cricket .. what I do see leads me to the conclusion that there are very few really pacey, consistent young bowlers and canny spinners coming through the ranks .. I hope that I am wrong on this1

Too much meaningless cricket is not attracting enough international stars to play alongside our young talent. Alongside that, the packed schedule is leading to old and tired pitches where there is no need for teams to develop genuine pace bowlers and why players like Darren Stevens stand out on the county circuit.
Is about it in a nutshell. The thing about old and slow pitches wasn't something I thought about before but it makes total sense. Explains why our bowlers are getting slower and our batsmen are struggling against genuine pace too.1 -

Topley has had a lot of back problems hopefully this is him growing into his frame. He doesn't need to be lightning quick especially being a lefty1

Mills hardly bowled last year though. Essex released him but maybe new start at Sussex will be good for him.0

On reflection , we do have a couple of spinners coming through - Adam Riley of course, and also Patel of Middx looks very good when i saw him bowl last season in his first full season.0

I was gonna say Dunn he has huge potential! His bowling action is perfect.. All the pace comes from the shoulder so it is possible to add pace and also it means he should remain injury free!! Meaker also of he could manage a whole season without serious injury would be right up there!!The_President said:

Cliché time: The English weather does not help the development of bowlers .. stick green wickets mean that dismissals all too often do not have to be worked for and trying to bowl fast on a wet, windy and cold morning/evening be it at Durham, Headingly, Old Trafford or even at Hove is asking for a pulled muscle/ligament or twocantersaddick said:

And it's easier to bat on hard, true fast tracks than it is on slow, seaming wickets in overcast conditions. Which is probably one of the many reasons we don't produce that many T20 batsmen.The_President said:

Rob Key made a good point re the pitches. The groundsmen have a difficult job with the pitches as there is so much cricket being played. The surface is usually dead and well used. With the ball swinging so much, medium quick bowlers are more effective.
On a different subject I saw the Australian bowlers against Scotland. Cummins, Johnson, Starc are all bowling really quickly. With bowlers like Harris and Hazlewood in reserve, they have some fearsome firepower.1 -

Good discussion this. For years Essex's best bowler has been david masters. Accurate, controlled, but very slow. He won't bother many great batsmen. Maybe we should concentrate on pinching foreigners?1

Sadly gone our the days when those same two/three foreign players religiously turned up every season for their counties - fantastic players such as Viv Richards, Joel Garner, Rohan Kanhai, Farokh Engineer, Clive Lloyd, Gary Sobers, Asif Iqbal, Barry Richards, Mike Proctor, Eddie Barlow, Mushtaq, Intikhab etc etc.
You could rely on those players doing their very best for their counties because it was their second home - and in some cases it became first home. The journeymen who turn up for the T20 or even just a month in the county championship are rarely as committed as their predecessors of a former era.
One player who I do believe will be a "throwback" is Sangakkara. On the one hand I hope he that isn't successful (as he is playing for Surrey) but, on the other and for the benefit of our national side, I believe he will be a terrific person to play with for their younger players especially someone like Jason Roy.
You can't beat that experience and as he is committed to a two year contract will be of far more benefit than someone like KP.3
