with 15 minutes of 2nd half left of this afternoons games we currently sit 15th, 4 points outside relegation zone, 5 points from play offs and 17 points behind Scunthorpe. The spanners are winning 3-0 and have moved up to 9th 1 point off the play offs, and they are our game in hand...oh dear!!
Seeing as it's Millwall away i don't even consider it as a game in hand. Automatic loss.
All obvious moaning aside, this game really did show how tactically inept Slade is. If you're going to play a diamond you absolutely have to either have midfielders who can specialise in the four specific roles, or full backs with the pace and ambition to bomb on down the wing and get crosses in. Take our match against Sheff Wed last season where even Karel titting Fraeye got a win. We turned up with a diamond, but with a sensible approach; Diarra played the holding role, which he was class at, Jackson and Ba played the wide roles of the diamond, where Ba's mobility helped him produce his best ever performance in the shirt for us, and Johann was freed up to create and cause havoc in the number 10 role. If Weds successfully pressed us in the middle we had Makienok up top to send it to so the midfield could re-organise. It still took decent performances all round and we couldn't maintain the form, but the set-up was at least functional.
Today we had Crofts wandering aimlessly round and breaking up absolutely nothing, Foley vaguely existing in the wider area, Ulvestad trying his best but being overrun and still essentially being out of position, and Jackson playing the 10 role, which we've all realised he can't do. It's just not his game. If you're going to turn up with a flat, miserable attempt at a diamond you can survive it if you've got a pair of Rhoys Wiggins style full backs. We have two slow full backs who don't have the pace to get beyond the halfway line without rocket skates and two days' headstart. Fox managed to get one cross in, which was halfway decent and that was the sum of their attacking contributions. Basically, we weren't set up in any way for the diamond to work. We actually would have been better off playing a flat 4-4-2, or Slade's favourite game canceller 4-5-1. It still would have been crap, but at least the players would have understood their jobs better.
He's dug the players out after the game, quite rightly, for their crap performances, but I don't think he's even realised that he set them up to fail from the start by not understanding how badly he's set the team up
Terrible performance but always going to be difficult without Holmes (class), Lookman (Premier league class) and Magennis (one of the signings of the summer).

However, it seems from the performance, that the players did understand how badly he'd set the team up.
Was at the game. Swindon had far more movement and wanted it more - lots of running and hassling when not in possession.
Charlton midfield not just physically slow, but also mentally. A few times Jackson was in good positions when playing at the tip of the diamond, if that's what it was in the first half, but the midfield/defence couldn't see it.
Ajose gives the air of a guy who knows his talent is being completely wasted due to a lack of creativity behind him.
Much of the attack seems to go down the left and Fox ends up having to deliver the killer ball, but he struggles to do this when put under pressure.
Bauer looked decent, but the defence overall looked shaky and made their no. 7 look like Lallana, when in reality he was not much more than a willing runner.
Some good comedy moments in the stand second half. If I were manager I'd spend a good amount of time emphasising to the players that they wasted the time of the 500 fans there, but, as someone mentioned earlier, are they behind him????
even with a weakened team that was unacceptable .. no fight, no pride, no pattern and a total lack of effort .. come January Novak must go and Foley ..
Despite our good defensive record so far this season, I have not been convinced .. this effort (or lack of it) reinforces my doubts .. lack of passion, grit and pace

Doesn't appear so. Everything about that performance today suggested the players want him gone. When Solly gives up there's not much hope for the rest.
Slade says 'we didn't see it coming, we trained well', I saw it coming when i saw the team selection...including the substitutes.
We have no leadership, no talismanic presence, nobody to drive us on and take responsibility, nobody (beyond Holmes and Magennis) who decides it is their job to make a difference...and no inspiration from the manager or coach.
But it will all probably be blamed on the fans and the protestors.
This situation has been building since as long ago as early March, when a proper plan, and a radical change of culture was needed.
Still Roland was seen tucking into his dweeb burger watching the live stream on his Apple watch enhanced by Melixis processors no doubt. And Roland thinks it is a well run club.

To be fair Novak did alright, looked about the only one that could come close to creating something.
Around the ten minute mark, a good two minutes of risk averse sideways and backwards passing along our back 4 followed by a punt forward and lost possession - Slade summed up
Terrible performance but always going to be difficult without Holmes (class), Lookman (Premier league class) and Magennis (one of the signings of the summer).
Agree
Slade's mistake was taking a negative "play all the experienced players I have in midfield" approach instead of giving some of our youngsters (or even Ba) a go. if he'd played Aribo and RCC and lost, people would be more sympathetic.
The absent players made a big difference. Imagine the Powell team with Yann, Jackson, Wagstaff and Green all missing at the same time (all comparable players in terms of their positions back in 2010). I don't recall too many other wide players in the squad to come in.

we were watching different games it seems .. BUT, then again, it's all a matter of opinion as well as being a game of 2 'alves .. in both of which the team was fucking awful, including Novak
A little club like Swindon have managed to get sherwood in and we manage to get that fat useless lump of folded arms shit Slade. Bloke and his team are an embarrassment, our OAP midfield must be suffering with Alzheimer's because they didn't know what to do and walked around aimlessly, never been so fed up that was just shit.

A few people on this thread have mentioned Novak being the only one to come out of it with the slightest bit of credit. Though I agree the team was utterly dire throughout.

Overall we were extremely poor. It shows how shallow we are without 3 key players, when we can be thumped by a relegation side - themselves missing a couple of regulars.
Our best player was Bauer (IMO).
Heaven knows what will happen if a side like that turns out at the toolbox in a month's time.

That was the sort of performance that gets managers the sack. An absolute affront to the 500 supporters who made the trip.
The absence of Holmes and Lookman was a major blow but it also brutally exposed Slade's limitations and his lack of ambition and tactical nous. The selection was utterly pedestrian - with four central midfielders - and we consequently resorted to our usual tactic of hoofball. That was never going to cut any ice with the lightweight Ajose up front (or, more usually, out wide), whilst Novak is better with the ball to his feet. Ajose also seems to be unable to read headed flick ons when Novak was, once in a while, actually able to win one against big central defenders. I fear that we've acquired a dud.
The team was littered with poor performances but a special mention for Crofts and for Pearce's defending at the second goal.
This team is going nowhere under Slade unless we lose Lookman in January and Holmes suffers an injury, in which case we're going to be looking over our shoulders.
Sadly, serving up this sort of garbage is only going to accelerate the shrinkage of our club and supporter base.
Did you go bluch or watch on tv? I know you go to a few so just curious? You and the others should be refunded if you did go
Happily, @cabbles , I watched this one down the local pub. At least there was some decent beer to ease the pain - unlike for the 504 who had to endure that diabolical performance.
Charlton's fortunes will only change and improve when Duchatelet sells and Meire are no longer at the club. The current midfield, which was clearly going to struggle due to its lack of pace and creativity, from the start of the season, is a prime example of lack of ambition and knowledge that is dooming the club.
First time I have watched this 'new team' this season and piss poor from all involved. No passion, no spirit, no skill, no determination and no efforts on target. I'm sure Katrien is extremely happy she travelled today. Roland will have given up watching at half time.
To be fair, it's hardly representative of the "new team" seeing that the best 3 attacking players are all missing
Doesn't mean that we can't keep a clean sheet which was never going to happen today.
