I’d totally forgotten about Smertin.
I’d have remembered him if he’d had better hair.2 -
fuck me - are we counting PSF's now !! That being the case I'm sure I could name a fair few goalscorers at Park View Road on a scorching July afternoon that were dogshite the rest of the season.guinnessaddick said:

Was with smertin last yr in china the bloke is a legend , loved his time with us told great stories runs virtually a marathon a day now just for fun2

Smertin, Murphy and Kishishev in CM, Rommedahl and Thomas out wide, Bent as the lone striker.
Back in 2004/05 this was called a defensive 4-5-1. Nowadays Murphy would be the "number 10" and it would be called 4-2-3-1.2 -

I don't "hate" Murray by any means but rather, in the manner of a patronising teacher, am disappointed.Riviera said:Everyone seems to hate Richard Murray but Varney a hero? My enduring memory of PV at CAFC is him doing an interview in the West Stand and proudly announcing he'd just given Les Reed a 3 or was it a five year contract!
The comparison with Varney is invalid. Yes Murray (and likely others) made a number of mistakes, errors of judgement and miscalculations in the period around Curbishley's departure and the horror show that followed and unfortunately didn't have an endless pot of money and resource to sufficiently mitigate them and halt our demise, let alone turn around our fortunes and get us back to the stratosphere he had previously funded and been a key contributor too.
I can't really begrudge anyone for that...he's a human being and therefore open to making mistakes particularly in an industry that is as chaotic and transient as football and the last 10 years has seen the English game transform beyond recognition in terms of the finances and resources required to just stay afloat let alone try and compete.
I also have great sympathy for his tragic personal loss in that period which would affect most greatly.
Where my resentment arises from is from the disdain he expressed for the significant element of our fan base during the current ownership.
A fan base that has been historically engaged with the club more than most fan bases and one which was integral to its own survival back in the VP days.
The deference that Murray showed to real, hardcore Charlton fans who truly care about our club and raised, what had proved jusified in abundance, significant concerns about this ownership, their agenda, strategy and general direction they were taking the club is what has caused the criticism.
He was once lauded and rightly so as a Charlton hero for delivering the great years. Whether it has been sheer arrogance or a genuine desperation to return us to the good days and subsequent bullish single mindedness in believing the Belgians are the best (or only) way to get us there who knows. Perhaps it is somewhere in between.
What has caused the ill feeling is the dismissive nature of those with valid concerns and justified protests and the explicit siding and alliance with one of the most destructive ownerships in our history, certainly in respect of the special relationship this fan base has had with the club.33 -
Thanks @RodneyCharltonTrotta . Sums up very concisely my feelings about Murray. Was part of the good times, made some mistakes, but recently has sided with satan against the fans. And still wants to be part of the big picture according to some. Why can't he accept his time has gone, and just buy a season ticket along with the rest?3

Spoke to someone yesterday who lunched with the Directors at the Gillingham game. He told me the atmosphere is toxic and very sad ( He was with the away contingent ). He said Keith Peacock is the positive energy, but the rest are flat and very down. In his opinion ( and I know some on here will know if this is fact or fiction ) Keith is holding things together behind the scenes.2

I don't know anything but I can well believe that to be honest.masicat said:Spoke to someone yesterday who lunched with the Directors at the Gillingham game. He is a big player in the Russian World Cup event team isn't he? Specifically trying to "manage' the anti-racism issues, I think.nth london addick said:Was with smertin last yr in china the bloke is a legend , loved his time with us told great stories runs virtually a marathon a day now just for fun

Didnt we win our first 5 away games season using that formation ?Scoham said:Smertin, Murphy and Kishishev in CM, Rommedahl and Thomas out wide, Bent as the lone striker.

My guess because they all know their days are now very much numbered, and that they won’t be greeted with open arms by those in the pleb areas of the valley.masicat said:Spoke to someone yesterday who lunched with the Directors at the Gillingham game. Can't recall if we did or not but do remember beating Pompey 2-1 down at their place, we were very good on the counter attack that day.MrOneLung said:

Darren Bent joined CAFC on 1 June 2005. We had a flying start to 2005/06, without which the season could have seen us relegated a year sooner than eventually happened.

Even if he just comes back as our CEO...might be a refreshing change. (Though appreciate this is not likely if RM remains involved in some shape or form.)0
