If the pitch isn't that conducive to spin, play 5 quicks? Stokes can then be played as a half bowlercantersaddick said:
Would you be happy with a bowling attack of 4 quicks (including Curran as 4th quick) and then Root/Denly as your only spinners? I wouldn't. The role of the spinner in tests is as much about holding up an end and keeping it tight to build pressure as it is about taking wickets. I'm not one for going back but Malan has had a decent year - is still young and has captaincy experience. Remember he has an ashes ton down under to his name and was dropped due to poor form rather than anything technical. Dawson - well who else would you pick as backup spinner- Moeen and Rash aren't playing red ball who else is there? Bess hasn't even got in Somerset's side this year at Ciderabad. He was sent out on loan to Yorkshire for half the season. Dawson hasn't done badly when called upon and can bat.0 -

I like Foakes but he is Averaging 27 in the championship this season, hardly smashing the door down. And with Buttler almost certain to play as a keeper I don't see the point of dragging Foakes all the way to New Zealand to carry the drinksNorth Lower Neil said:Foakes is very unlucky.0 -

Mahmood and Parkinson, both 22 and of Lancashire, have 21 and 19 wickets respectively in Division Two.
Can't recall when taking so few wickets (in Division Two at that) has been enough to get a call up. But then they do both play for Lancashire and can't help thinking that had they been at Worcestershire their names would not even get a mention in dispatches!2 -

Trying to think how many Essex players are of the standard... I mean Westley wasn't, bopara and cook are too old, Browne as an opener? Not consistent enough. Only person left likely to play for england is maybe Porter, but I have some doubts (though he'll be a county legend).Lincsaddick said:

There was something in what Bayliss was saying the other day that English pitches aren't conducive to producing bowlers with real pace who can extract something from dead pitches. Medium pace seems to be king, but won't trouble international batsmen consistently1 -
Funnily New Zealand (especially in November) is somewhere where medium pacers will be dangerous! New Zealand have had a few dobbers in the past, and Darren Stevens would love those conditionsMcBobbin said:

Glad they have dropped Bairstow, he has needed a rocket up his arse for a while now, as his test form has been woeful over the last couple of years.
To average 35 with his ability is very poor, as after he made those runs in SA a few years ago, I really thought he would crack on to become a top class player - but he has gone backwards.
Same as Buttler needs some runs on the board as well, as to average 33 after 36 tests is pretty poor for a guy with his talent.
We need to develope some red ball specialist batters (which will of course take time), as this obsession with all-rounders has left us exposed.3 -
The Professional Cricketers' Association has announced their nominations for the Players' Player of the Year title for 2019.
On Wednesday 2 October, the PCA will announce whether Essex spinner Simon Harmer, Gloucestershire all-rounder Ryan Higgins or Warwickshire batsman Dom Sibley has been awarded the title of runner-up to Ben Stokes.

I am kind of repeating what has been said, but I hope Roy has only been dropped to give him a rest. Agree he hasn't really done enough to get back in the test side, but 20/20 and ODI you would think he should be one of the first names as he showed in the world cup.

Did well with India. Interesting that he has stepped down from previous major roles due to family commitments, as England will be a full on role0

Had talked myself into the position of having a Manager type role (Stewart?) overseeing the side in all formats and individual coaches (Colly/Silverwood) taking the side for different series etc.
But Kirsten wouldn't be a bad call.0 -
