I had the privilege of sitting behind Steve in the East Stand and sharing half time news and views over many years. He was a very charismatic man who I’m sure will be sorely missed by family and friends alike. I know I will miss him, even for those short 100 minutes on a Saturday afternoon. He was a man ready to lend an ear and give an opinion in equal measures - prepared to give someone the benefit of the doubt, but prepared to fight for a Charlton cause. We have likely all benefitted in some fashion from his charm and endeavours.
No way. As Airman said, he and Craig became joined at the hip and no others can say they were the first two ever Supporters Directors. Sure, we had our differences, including one unforgettable night on Charlton Live, but Steve put his heart and soul into Charlton for sure. All thoughts with his family. R. I. P.
How cruel! He was always there over the years. Whenever Charlton was in trouble, the name Steve Clarke popped up. Always fighting for the club and the supporters. Very intelligent and talented man, who seemed comfortable speaking on the TV, radio, at supporters meetings. Sincere condolences to his poor wife and children. RIP Steve and thanks for all you did for us over many years.
I'm shocked by this news. I knew Steve from the London insurance market, long before the Valley Party days.
During my visits to London, I'd often arrange to meet Steve at The Anchor And Hope before a game, despite the fact their beer is always badly kept, so I could catch up on some inside information about CAFC. Exceptionally friendly and easy-going, Steve was a very intelligent guy who spoke extremely well and was a great mouthpiece for Charlton fans and the Trust.
I'd fairly recently been in discussion with him regarding mediation courses, put on hold due to COVID.
Deeply shocked and sad to hear that Steve's passed away. I had the privilege to know him well in his Fans' Director days in the 1990s and a more committed Addick and truer gentleman you could not meet. Then and since, he contributed so much to the Club and did so much for fans but always in his quiet and effective way. It was always about CAFC and fans, never himself. I am in bits here. I had not seen Steve for years, but we worked closely together during the Valley Party campaign and remained firm friends after. When we had the Valley Party football team he would jump in at short notice to referee games on a Sunday morning, and was often better than the registered refs. His famous sense of fair play shone through. It is often said when people pass away, but in this case it really is true. He was one of the nicest people I have ever known. RIP Steve, you will be sorely missed.
I didn’t know Steve but was shocked to see the news yesterday. He was always a sensible intelligent spokesperson and passionate fan for the club and gave his time to try and make things better for all of us - very sad news and my thoughts are with his family
Such sad news. Didn’t know Steve but felt that I did through the work he did with the supporters club, Trust and, back in the day, the CAFC Board. An articulate man who will be sorely missed. RIP
From VIP TO RIP This year will be a hard one to forget.
Got to know Steve in the early 90s through CASC board meetings always had something positive to say. He was a Charlton man for all the fans and would always listen to both sides of the discussion. When ever we met up home or away would always greet us with a friendly smile and have a chat.
Two VIP Directors will be having a chat over Charlton again tonight.
My thoughts go out to the family and friends of Steve.
What dreadful news. For over 20 years, I’ve sat in the row behind Steve and, for me, Charlton and Steve are inextricably linked. At games, we chatted about holiday destinations as well, of course, as Charlton stuff. Steve had a dry sense of humour - we had great fun recalling past players who didn’t quite live up to their early promise. When we get back to the Valley, it won’t be the same without him. My thoughts are with his family.
Very sad. I didn't know Steve but he clearly personified a lot of the good things our club should stand for. It sounds as though he may just have played a part too in helping to bring that about again. Thanks for all your efforts Steve, RIP.
