The last time I saw comments as ambiguous as those was when I last read one of Maddison's tweets about being on the bench. It's all a game isn't it using journos and social media to suit their respective purposes.
Maddison was always a strange signing. Not because he doesn't have the talent to make a difference but because he's not an LB type player. It is always the sum of the total and what he perceives to be a professional approach to playing and training that matters.
There is a reason why skilful players such as Williams (started 36 games in over two years), Oztumer (4 in 18 months) and Maddison (4 this season) are used so sparingly - LB is not prepared to compromise on effort and industry. But he did sign them all and none of them are at an age where it is easy to change them.
Both Maddison's previous two clubs have both done well without him. I'm sure that we can too but it is disappointing to have used up a meaningful proportion of the cap on someone who LB isn't really that bothered about, who also has a massive ego and who was always likely to be a poor fit.
There again, it might just be that he was a gamble LB was prepared to make given that we were in October when signing him and that there wasn't an abundance of alternatives around. Bogle followed a week later and he seems to have been a panic purchase too.

The first approach was only to give Southall a bit of credence. Bowyer wasn't to know that. But he didn't know how much shyte Southall was about to chat.
Then second time round, when you've got to get a squad together quick, you can understand him approaching a player he effectively knew. Still a bit of a gamble though
I've never got the impression he was a player that Bowyer was desperate to sign.3 -

That’s fair comment Daz but I’m sure you’ve bought things before despite having researched the product fully but been disappointed with its performance. Maybe Bowyer thought he could make him a better team player however jumping out of tackles, is like a red rag to a bull to LB.Dazzler21 said:

Bowyer sees him in training (when he’s fit) and if his attitude is not right why should he be mollycoddled? The bloke is taking up a salary and no wonder LBs moaning about the cap. The fella needs to get his act together and roll his sleeves up.
Scouts, players and other managers would have given opinions on him.
I'm concerned if we've still put in the effort to sign him and he's as bad as some are insinuating.
As a kid you’re told go in committed or else your going to get hurt, basic stuff. Personally I don’t think he was injured when he bottled that infamous challenge and as I said at the time, if he was he should’ve gone down beforehand. And again when you start playing at a higher level you are told to do so therefore he was his own worst enemy. So the ‘I don’t care’ remark after the game to me was more directed towards the reasoning why he jumped rather than about the players welfare.Unfortunately it seems that the manager and player don’t have the same view on how the game should be played and unless they have a meeting of minds Maddison will be an outcast. It won’t be the first in the history of the game or the last.4 -
Somethings not quite right there is it. If he was ill then fair enough but that’s not actually what Bowyer says. “He says he is ill”, that doesn’t sound like he believes him to me.I wouldn’t be surprised if he doesn’t play for us again but we’ll see.2

I think there's a lot of assumptions being made about Maddison being a disruptive character but I think it might be something less to do with him being a dick per se, and more his willingness to adapt. Bowyer knew what he was getting with Maddison; a player with flair and a creative spark who wants to play an advanced role. He had a great time at Peterborough on the pitch because they don't care about defending as a unit, they just want goals. It's why they never get anywhere despite often looking good. In an ideal world Bowyer would sign a creative player who is also willing to put in the work with his defensive responsibilities, but as has often been the case the money or time isn't there to get that player, so he has to sign a creative player in the hopes that he is willing to learn the defensive side. Of all our players Maddison has looked the least interested in adapting his game to fit the style; Bowyer's tactical style requires players working all over the pitch to press, close down and win back the ball out of possession or it doesn't work. When a midfielder decides he can't be arsed chasing back, or shirks a challenge the opposition get a chance at our goal and Bowyer hates that because it can wreck our whole game. If Maddison won't adapt his game then he doesn't fit into how we're playing. All the people saying that Bowyer 'knew what he was getting' with Maddison are missing the point; he knew, told the player what he needed to work on to be successful and hasn't seen the change he's demanded. Contrast that with Albie who has been told what to do, has been taken to task for not doing it, and has shown willingness to learn and looks a better player for it. It might be that Maddison is stropping around the place chucking cold slices of Dominos at people in training, but I think it's more likely that Bowyer wants him to adapt his game and he either can't or won't, which is a shame.

Yes I agree. You can compare Taylor and Maddison, two flair players who I would regard to be quite stroppy. One like you say, works their bollocks off for the team. The inner football world would have known and so would have SG, Bows etc. But was it worth a risk in the position we were in? I would say yes and think that if anyone could get him back on track it would have been Bowyer.
Tweets in the middle of the night whilst scoffing pizza suggests to me that his issues are deeper than just not liking training or similar.Others said something about Bowyer as a manager should have gone over to see how is was. I don’t know what organisation you work for, but if you are not going into work you call your boss and explain the problem. You update them while you are off. When you are fit to return you call them. The first thing you do when you get in you go to see them and let them know you are back. You don’t expect your manager to have to come looking for you. It doesn’t work both ways.Signing him was worth the risk. Some you lose. It would take a fantastic change of attitude for him to get himself back into the squad. Unfortunately I don’t think he has that in him, and there is nobody else to blame for that.1 -

TS will hear constant references to the salary cap that's "killing us" and then see his money wasted on a player who was meant to put goals on a plate for forwards, that's no longer being talked about with the same expectation and skillset on offer.
