Ronnie Schwartz (Page 73 - contract cancelled)

Sometimes football clubs make signings that don’t work out. Felt early on that this was always going to be the case with Schwartz as he just looked way of the pace and a little unfit to me - and, for whatever reason it may have been, it seemed like he was always swimming against the tide to improve that.
Would have loved it to work as felt he would have become a cult hero if it did. But there we go, these things happen, and hopefully some lessons have been learnt.

Shame but sometimes it is better on both sides to cut your losses and move on.
Money wasted but it was Sandgaard's money.
What the opportunity cost, IE who else could we have got instead and what impact they would have had, we'll never know.8 -
Mmmmm……the truth is we don’t know exactly what went wrong.
A few hunches and guesses around but it’s something of a mystery.
Maybe the truth will out someday?0 -
His personal life ..plus his own problems joining us during covid .. etc etc … Shame because he was the striker that could have fired us up the league ..

Was this signing one that went through the Recruitment team analysts and then the black box? Or was it a punt that went very wrong. Either way we have to improve our recruitment very quickly, and not a good start for the 1st full window that TS went through.3

Certainly not lived up to the fanfare and hype, must be up there for one of the most expensive flops ever @ Charlton?1

Thomas Sandgaard mooted Schwartz as a target but worth making clear that Lee Bowyer was happy to sign him. I had more than one conversation with LB at the time and he felt RS could be a decent addition.

Nice post. I note Gilbey is quite open on the socials so trust Schwartz was liked by the team if not the manager.ForeverAddickted said:4 -
Not a black box signing, we tried to sign him late last year before the window closed in October. The black box and new recruitment setup came after Roddy joined, and I think it was said it was in pace after the January window.JohnnyH2 said:Was this signing one that went through the Recruitment team analysts and then the black box? That frees up a space in our squad. It'll be interesting whether we have a free agent lined up already (hence Ronnie being released now mid window) or whether the timing was just because it suited both parties1

Had rocket arrived in the summer window of 2020 (as was first mooted) perhaps it may have been different, particulary as was cawley suggested today that Bow fancied him. But Nads clearly didn't and from what I saw of Ron he wouldn't have worked well in Nads preferred formation anyway.
Thanks for the memory rocket..2 -
Makes sense and wish him well in the future.0

Well Jordan Ibe must be shortly to recover from his broken leg right...?0

Such, such short memories. The signing was lined up in the 5 day international window left after our transfer embargo was lifted in September and followed up in January.
The only reason it was bizarre was because 10 days later we learned Stockley was heading for Bristol Rovers on loan and Bowyer was able to work a deal with Peter Risdale. TS supported his manager.
While their playing styles were markedly different both predominantly played as the sole striker in 4-1-4-1 or 4-2-3-1. In the case of Schwarz such a role was almost exclusive.
With Aneke in the building where was Schwarz going to get a regular game. He was instantly demoted to a No3 role. Perhaps it would be more telling who we were able to sign when the September deal couldn’t get done. Bogle was considering walking away from the pro game.
In terms of financial cost you have no idea of any fees or contract value. In a Covid period and under a salary cap I doubt either were excessive. The average Super Ligaen salary is equivalent of circa €100k p.a.. He was sitting in another club reserves not getting a game.
Disappointed it didn’t work out. Wish the guy well.

Andy Jones? Far from the most expensive tbf but came with much expectation.Mendonca In Asdas said:Certainly not lived up to the fanfare and hype, must be up there for one of the most expensive flops ever @ Charlton?
Killer was a flop at Derby, but nobody could argue that he didn't know where the goal was.
I was excited when he was first mentioned as he seemed to have had some good moments. I got more concerned as time went on because his more recent record was poor and was dropped completely for ages before we signed him.
A strange saga. Wishing you all the best for the future Ronnie.1 -
Killer was only a flop at Derby due to the fact that they never passed to him...TellyTubby said:

Just a thought but like most of us that apply for a new job, wonder what will be on RS reference from Adkins.
"Ronny is an excellent striker that scored a goal against Rochdale."
The end.
Good luck Ronny. This part of your career will be a disappointment that will stay with you I have no doubt. Hopefully your next club will get some return on their investment on wages and you will rebuild your self-esteem.0 -
Slightly disappointed, no Kenneth Williams gif has appeared....Oooohh MatronTodds_right_hook said:

If only we played to his strengths, he could have been the next Super Clive0

Ronnie should have changed his name to Walking. Then he'd have been brilliantDazzler21 said:

Always hoped Schwartz would cook something up on the pitch, sadly turned out being a recipe for disaster!!!🙄🤷🏻♂️, good luck Ronnie very disappointing outcome.0

Can we start a new thread with discussion of every goal he ever scores for the rest of his career, with comments like "said before he left he would come good and got 235 LOLs. Well who's laughing now?"1
-
Disappointed but shit happens0
-
Up the Adkins meme his most memorable contribution. That’s what happens when you have a middle aged wannabe rock star leading the recruitment committee.5
-
Pretty sure that was on the cards given he was told end of August he wasn't part of their plans0
-
Oh no!
Ronnie's gone!
Where are all our goals going to come from now!0 -
A Roland-esque signing! A footballing and financial failure! Let's hope Tommy learns from this one.1
-
We were built up to believe that virtually every shot he has from inside the penalty box will lead to a goal. I bought into this following Rochdale but didn't see much quality since then.
Shame for player, club and Danish gangsters.1
