The problem with the commentary was 20% bias, 80% unprofessionalism.A small match on ITV4 is where ITV bloods their 3rd level commentators and pundits, but you’d have thought that the need for research would be drummed into them. The fact that it clearly hasn’t been is a failure of management. The Charlton Live boys seem more professional and knowledgable in that respect.
Purrington/Pure-ington we a classic example of not checking with the Charlton comms boys how to pronounce their names. They got Lecko right (it’s pronounced ‘Leecko’) only because they ‘bumped into him’ before the game. Not knowing Euell is a coach was poor. They didn’t offer any info on any of our players as far as I can remember. No mention of which players are on loan etc.Hopefully they’ll learn from this match, and go on to better things, as I’m sure there decent guys. They just need to make quite a lot more of an effort.7 -

Both Beckford and Matterface were piss poor and need to watch the Man Utd game from Thursday night on how to commentate on a game. Drury and McCoist are the masters at it.4

Can’t see why he needs to apologize and if Charlton fans have been after him on twitter for it then they need to get a life.7

Miserableoldgit said:Whilst not loving the commentary last night I didn't really dislike Beckford either. Thought he was upbeat and that he was enjoying the game. Slight bias towards Gateshead, just like, probably, 100% of the neutrals watching. Can't understand why people would post abuse towards him. Now, Matterface......that's a different story.
And as the Gateshead players are full time (albeit on low wages) it's not like the old days where you'd have the team of policemen, postmen etc that everyone wants to do well.0 -

Can't take the piss out of any fanbase when we have people like that among us. Palace behaviour.2 -
anyone know the official attendance?0

Everything's been said above, both commentators were awful and literally blagging it re players and history, so much verbal diarrhoea.
Yes Beckford was ridiculous in his bias in the first five minutes or so (certainly didn't warrant an apology ffs), but it was more that they were both excruciatingly awful commentators.
The irony is that, by doing this, he might just be able to achieve something I never thought possible - become a worse commentator than Clive Tyldesley.2 -

Newcastle vs Burnley was equally as turgid!0

One of great strengths during the Curbishley PL era was we slipped under the radar by all clubs, supporters and the media within it. It allowed us to go about out business very efficiently, the number of away games we would win where the opposition supporters would get on the own teams backs after 20 minutes because it was 'only Charlton'. We even used to get managers sacked when we beat them as if you could beat Charlton what hope did you have.
Last night showed not much has changed and that is just great. So what if the ITV and Talksport Number 1 commentator knows very little about us. We just went about the job in hand and in slip under the TV expectation of a shock and we go into the 3rd Round.

Beckford was poor, didnt even mention Lyle0

I noticed Matterface mention Michael Smith had played for Gateshead but not that he played for us which would have made it a great fact to bring in and a few other missed details. Not sure how important it is though. Motson would have probably known. Certainly nothing to complain about.0

@Grapevine49 used the word “context” in his analysis of last night’s performance. Today’s results give a wider context:
Lincoln: OUT. Beaten at home by Hartlepool
even better…
Portsmouth OUT , beaten at home in the 9th minute of injury time by Harrogate
Ipswich, held to a 0-0 draw at home by Barrow, good luck with the replay if you can actually get there…all this despite being managed by Paul Cook.I trust Thomas has already taken on board this wider context….4
