I would be tempted to ask Broad to fill the role for the next two to three years. I don't follow cricket in any much the same way I do football, so forgive me for my ignorance, but to me the way we played yesterday it felt like Root had "lost" the dressing room - not sure of the captains role in comparison to say a football manager and if those terms can relate in the same way? Surely looking at the pattern of play in the previous two innings, the message would have been to keep it tight and defensive early on until the new ball was soft and then perhaps take more chances to move the scoring along.Addick Addict said:

When your top 7 can only muster 127 in a Test match, no captain is going to change their ability to score runs under pressure. The issues go far deeper than that.2

He's the best captain in world cricket. Admittedly he's not a test player & would purely be selected for his captaincy, but could do the job for a year or so until we can blood somebody else0 -
That is absolutely correct. That should have happened. But these players have such ingrained deficiencies to the extent that the likes of Crawley, Stokes and Bairstow will default to white ball mode at any given time and the rest, apart from Root, have severe technical issues.Manic_mania said:

I've been disappointed with Foakes in this series with bat and ball. He deserves a run but if he doesn't improve in both disciplines then he will be under pressure. The other aspect is that it is incredibly hard to keep and captain in Test cricket. You are, potentially, having to concentrate for 500 balls plus and six hours in a day and gee up your team that there us little enough respite let alone make vital decisions that influence the game. The biggest example of that is Tim Paine ridiculously wasting a review that cost them the Ashes.

Very difficult to pick him when he is so committed to the IPL, Big Bash, The Hundred and other T20 franchises. He may not be back from the IPL 'til almost June. The irony is that I can see Billings keep and captain England but not doing both. But he won't be doing that unless he commits to red ball and puts together a string of scores in the CC that justifies his selection.wmcf123 said:

In recent England teams, with international players so rarely appearing for their counties, many England captains have little experience of captaining a county side0 -
I can understand quite a few people calling for Stokes to get the captaincy because of his achievements but I just don’t think he’s Captain material…..rather like Beefy wasn’t.Callumcafc said:

It worries me that both Beefy and Freddie failed as captains. If nothing else the workload would be massive, though Jason Holder did a very good job as Windies captain.SoundAsa£ said:

Seeing his name crop up quite a bit. I think it’s actually the best option but I doubt Morgan would take it. If he can give other batsmen the confidence I’d ignore what his own batting average is.Gravesend_Addick said:

Morgan is a white ball specialist, and aged 35 on his way out anyway. A great white ball captain, but with no real red ball captaincy experience, and not worth his place in the side as a batsman...0

If he thinks he’s ready to take it on, he’s an obvious candidate. But I do worry that he might be the man for 12-18 months, get overwhelmed by it all and then disappear from international cricket in its entirety.0 -
Agreed . He’d have to stop bowling, which would distort the balance of the side . The best captaincy candidate is Buttler but he’s not worth his place in the side .Callumcafc said:

I've given it some thought & I just can't see who else there is to take over, so I think Root will stay on as captain. The only other person who is guaranteed his place in the team is Stokes & given he's only recently returned from a break due to his mental health, I can't see him taking on the captaincy.
The big call is the new coach. We need an ambitious, forward thinking coach who can give Root the guidance he needs to make the correct on field decisions.
Gillespie or Langer for me.
After this, we need a complete review & overhaul of the county system.

Root to cling on and ultimately be replaced when the right South African qualifies. If Ricardo Vasconcelos has a good season leading Northants in Div 1 this season then he jumps the queue (I personally rate him very highly as a player)0

He's then dropped at slip - off another no ball. Buttler is then caught off the free hit of a 4th no ball - bowled by a spinner! Williamson must be tearing his hair out.0
