Give it Stokes/Broad0

Might be unconventional but I don’t trust them throwing it immediately to a Stokes or Bairstow. Could Foakes be future captain material from behind the stumps?1 -

Is there no good county captain who could step up? I've seen Abell being mentioned0 -
MrOneLung said:Give it Stokes/BroadStokes is the only viable option in my opinion. Cummins is an exception to be bowler and captain and he is because he is certain of his place. Broad isn't and has only played 10 games of cricket in the last 11 months, partly through non selection and partly because his body won't be able to commit to the rigours of playing a four or five match series. To a degree that is true of Stokes albeit that he is good enough to be selected as a batsman only.I do think, though, that we will just be re-arranging the deckchairs. When your top 7 can only muster 127 in a Test match, no captain is going to change their ability to score runs under pressure. The issues go far deeper than that.2

He's the best captain in world cricket. Admittedly he's not a test player & would purely be selected for his captaincy, but could do the job for a year or so until we can blood somebody else0 -

I've been disappointed with Foakes in this series with bat and ball. He deserves a run but if he doesn't improve in both disciplines then he will be under pressure. The other aspect is that it is incredibly hard to keep and captain in Test cricket. You are, potentially, having to concentrate for 500 balls plus and six hours in a day and gee up your team that there us little enough respite let alone make vital decisions that influence the game. The biggest example of that is Tim Paine ridiculously wasting a review that cost them the Ashes.

In recent England teams, with international players so rarely appearing for their counties, many England captains have little experience of captaining a county side0 -

Takes a very different type of character to be the captain of any team sport……and it’s not necessarily the best player.0 -

Morgan is a white ball specialist, and aged 35 on his way out anyway. A great white ball captain, but with no real red ball captaincy experience, and not worth his place in the side as a batsman...0

Morgan a white ball specialist , hasn’t he been pony in recent times as a white ball batsmen0

Takes a very different type of character to be the captain of any team sport……and it’s not necessarily the best player.Giving him the captaincy is additional stress that he really doesn’t need as he gets back into the groove with his bowling and eventually his batting.
If he thinks he’s ready to take it on, he’s an obvious candidate. But I do worry that he might be the man for 12-18 months, get overwhelmed by it all and then disappear from international cricket in its entirety.0 -

I've given it some thought & I just can't see who else there is to take over, so I think Root will stay on as captain. The only other person who is guaranteed his place in the team is Stokes & given he's only recently returned from a break due to his mental health, I can't see him taking on the captaincy.
The big call is the new coach. We need an ambitious, forward thinking coach who can give Root the guidance he needs to make the correct on field decisions.
Gillespie or Langer for me.
After this, we need a complete review & overhaul of the county system.
A long road ahead1 - Sponsored links:

Root to cling on and ultimately be replaced when the right South African qualifies. If Ricardo Vasconcelos has a good season leading Northants in Div 1 this season then he jumps the queue (I personally rate him very highly as a player)0
-
Nasser has gone for Key as DOC, Ponting as Coach and Stokes as Captain1

Beddingham is the one i'm desperate for to qualify. Bloke is absolutely quality0
-
Buttler out for a duck in his first IPL game of the season. And has to be recalled due to Bunheshwar Kumar's delivery is a front foot no ball. Some bowlers never learn. He's then dropped at slip - off another no ball. Buttler is then caught off the free hit of a 4th no ball - bowled by a spinner! Williamson must be tearing his hair out.0
