POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic vs Wigan Athletic: Tuesday 9th April 2024: KO 19:45

Sounds like we largely outplayed them in the first, and went in one up, but let them back into it midway through the second when they scored two in quick succession. We leveled late and had a few chances to go on and win but it wasn’t to be.

Maybe not finishing the season with emphatic wins could help the rebuilding process?

Still annoyed to see Dobbo go.

He'll be with us next season.

The changes Wigan made at half time overloaded our midfield, Ramsey's poor choice of a header allowed them to break on us for the first and the second was pretty similar. There was a few tired performances out there but Dobson, Coventry and Small kept us going. Positive of the night ? Tyreece Campbell looking hungry again.

Not going to win many games if you concede 2 goals.

I thought we looked quite comfortable really up until that 5 minute spell. The first goal could have been defended, but it came from a turn over after Ramsey (who I think is very good) lost it. And these things happen.

    The 2nd though was inexcusable.

Like last year people seem fixated on who is scoring our goals now. Last year our goals were to spread out, this year one person is getting to many of them.

Both years we scored enough and if we could have kept cleans sheets or defended better we would have been challenging for top 6.
  • Didn't watch or follow so no comment on the game. But I hope NJ persuades Campbell to stay.  He is decent and always has been.  Appleton destroyed all our kids, none more than him.
Sadly some of our crowd seemed too dim to see it and got on his back for a while.

Well, the script for that one must have been written by a lover of farce.

After a low key first half the Addicks created enough opportunities to win several games. But our old defensive frailties meant we had to come from behind to gain a draw. Further half chances to win it didn’t quite fall our way so we have to be content with an entertaining point.

On the plus side, Hector strong again, Ramsey did well, Dobbo outstanding in midfield, Chuks made a difference again.

On the downside, Dan Kanu is looking jaded and needs a rest. Didn’t see anything like enough from LuLua to suggest that he’ll get a contract offer.

Should have won it by more than 1 goal but our defence costs us again. We never look like we won't concede. Add to that some weak shooting from us and the miss of the season from Chuks.

TC looked great when he came on and Ramsey and Small are the opitome of what wing backs should be.

Special mention to the ref who was an absolute wanker. Embarrassing how he kept falling for Wigan's inability to stand up for more than 2 minutes.

How have we not won that

Because of 2 stupid defensive errors

If that game had mattered it probably would have given me a heart attack but as it happens I found it pretty entertaining. We were far better in the second half than the first but somehow once again left ourselves horribly exposed for the goals.
  • Most of us knew it was going to go 1-1 after we missed all those chances. Up until the 60th min Wigan weren’t in the game, and suddenly they are 2-1 up. Been the problem the whole season we have allowed non threatening teams chances to get back into matches.

Two points dropped and any hope of that top half bet winning ended tonight.

That was the worse defence I have seen at the Valley.

Two points dropped. Not keen on any of our CBs, we must strengthen here in the summer.

    Lua Lua, what’s the point.?

    Istead fumbles again.

    Missed loads of chances again.

    Kanu needs a rest.

Why are we letting Dobbo go, madness.

If Isted can learn to deal with tame shots I can see us turning draws to wins.

Cut out the 5 mins of Calamity Charlton and it would have been an easy home win
  • As always the problem is the defence. Yes we should've scored more tonight but we still scored twice which should be enough to win you a home game. Our goalscoring isn't far off the play off sides, and we've scored more than Lincoln who are 7th.

However the defending is abysmal and we've conceded more than Burton and Cheltenham who are in the relegation zone.

Lua Lua getting a kicking in player marks but we created an absolute fuckload of chances with him on the field. I thought what he did well was realise he can no longer run past people, and pass to someone else instead. Sure, his legs have gone and he won't get a new contract but I don't actually think he got any decisions wrong while he was on

This might not be a popular opinion but I don’t think Kanu or Anderson are quite ready to hold down the first 11 selection. Both Kanu and Anderson’s work rate is unquestionable and both get top marks on their effort. But effort alone is not enough. I get fed up listening about Kanu has just slipped over, been muscled off the ball, a bad first touch etc. And this also applies to Anderson. To get out of this fucking awful league we need to replace them with stronger players that are not bullied and can give it out too. It was nonsense tonight taking off Alfie when he would have been better suited with a stronger partner. I’m not in anyway basing my opinion on just tonight’s match as our defence continues to be without a central defender that commands the back 4-3.

I said before the game that the bench, stuffed full of strikers and wingers and no centre backs, looked like one ready for a change of formation, and a chance to try out players. Of the subs, Lualua was completely ineffective, TC was excellent, Chuks scored one and missed a sitter, while Wickham didn't have enough time to do much, though looked sharp.

An entertaining but strange game in that we had tons of chances, but didn't test the keeper enough, too many shots being straight at him. We dominated them, yet needed a dubious OG to score one of our goals.

Terrible defending for 5 minutes cost us dearly, the second goal in particular was a collective shambles. Ramsay looked rusty at times, but will improve hopefully.

Dobbo was my MOTM today, thriving in a forward pressing role, and nearly scoring.

Have to politely disagree with you on this one. He contributed very little. Played it safe more often than not and don't remember him being involved in any of our most dangerous moves.

Great cameo from Campbell, Chuks looked off the pace, Lua Lua was awful, the rest of them just meh. Big rebuilding job. Need to build our defence around Thomas and Hector, lol.

No I'm saying he did play it safe, because he knew he didn't have the beating of the defenders. Rather than try and fail, he moved it back to someone else. It was exactly what he should have done given he's no longer up to it

So in the stats that the pundits spout, do we get two points added to the ‘points lost from a winning position’ tally AND 1 point added to the ‘points won from a losing position’ tally

None of the chances were down to him though. I can't recall a single incisive pass or run he made, at a time when the game was VERY open.

I understand why NJ brought him on, he's planning for next season, but it was an ineffective appearance.
