Alex Gilbey was a strange one as he was excellent at home to Ipswich and the big win away at Plymouth.
His career imploded at CAFC and the two identical cheap shirt pulls at the valley when just outside the opposition's box saw him get two yellows in the 1st half of a game that cost CAFC a defeat under JJ.
This game made me realize Gilbey had shite for brains.

The Ipswich home game when he scored and ran the show saw him average 8.7 and maybe highest of the season but very hit or miss( mainly miss) after that.
  • To be fair to Gilbey,  he has performed quite well since he left Charlton.  My impression is that he is a very good league 2 level player who just isn’t good enough to be a starter in league one.

Didn’t have much to do today but thought he showed composure. Looking forward to seeing more.

I think he had the ability but not the drive , nor the commitment to play in tier 3.  A serial hider - we’ve had quite a few .

I wouldn't know, i was too busy with the Charlton game. Gilbert looked decent enough though.

Skipper Alex Gilbey and Goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray have signed new deals to stay in MK.

Some goal he scored for MK dons the other night. I understood him to be quite a toxic character and not a decent player whilst with us but he’s club captain at mkdons and scoring 1 in 5. What happened?!

Some players just click at certain clubs

And at certain levels - as Boston says above, probably just a decent L2 player and wasnt quite good enough for L1.

Alex Gilbey can and does have excellent moments in the lower divisions; It was a cracker of a goal.

The same Player when at CAFC also had shit for brains?

Charlton are 1-0 up under JJ at the Valley and Gilbey is in Lincoln's half and nearer to their area than the halfway line and with plenty of Charlton players in position decides to pull back a player and gets a Yellow card.
Then in the 37 minute of the 1st half does exactly the same thing again in a similar position and gets another yellow card and takes an early bath.
Charlton ended up losing 2-1 because of a player being an idiot.
It was either moronic or something more sinister behind his actions.
I was one of the few that could see that Gilbey had some talent but likes most Charlton players over the years had flaws in their game.

I thought he was ok for us. Definitely no better than league one standard but we’ve had a lot worse players .

Alex Gilbey revisionism. The final sign we've all completely lost our minds

He was average at best, had a few good games when Jackson first took over. Towards the end of that season though he was terrible and looked like he couldn’t be bothered

So Charlton fans and critics who gave him an average score of 8.7 in a match against Ipswich were wrong ?

In all my decades of analysing players I can assure you players who are 100% shit don't produce a performance that Gilbey did that day.

Were you there that day ?

A one off top performance which is why he’s since played in L1 and L2.

Gilbey’s an average L1 player at best. He showed signs of becoming a goalscoring midfielder for us but it never happened, but it did when he played in L2 for MK Dons.

We’ve had other average L1 players in promotion squads, but like them he wasn’t good enough to be a regular in a L1 promotion side.

He was good in that game. But it was one game.

If anyone can be bothered to look up his end-of-season statbank scores, I think his average was something like 5.6 and 5.7.

Yet another player from an era when we were awash with crap and mediocrity that meant we had to perform mental arithmetic akin to something like Stockholm syndrome, to convince ourselves ‘there’s a player in there’

league 2 is his level, one of a number of players I couldn’t stand from a time I’d rather forget
  • He was not good enough for us, our expectations and where we wanted to be as team.

However I’d take being crap if it meant I scored double figure goals from midfield in league 2 3 seasons running.

I have stated he's a lower league player but I just don't think he is shit. I watch Sevenoaks sometimes and I wouldn't call any part time player shit !
He gets paid to play football so I'm jealous straight away.
He has found his level at MK Dons with 48 goals in 221 App(in 2 spells) as an attacking midfielder.

So many players struggle at Charlton yet can have a decent career elsewhere and not always lower down as Simon Francis Proved in playing two divisions higher as Bournemouth reached the Premier !

Gilbey pissed me off as I said at 10.43 with his 2 yellow cards.

Plus he joined in with derogatory song about CAFC so of course he is persona non grata.
  • He did poorly for us, if it wasn’t for his stevenage antics I doubt anyone would remember him

Yes, I thought there was something amiss rather than just on the pitch.

I do remember as a diabetic I believe, he was badly affected by covid early during the pandemic - maybe he was very much struggling with fitness and stamina.

Plus, I do remember reading he was very hacked off with the way Nigel Adkins used him.
