POST-MATCH THREAD: Watford v Charlton Athletic: Easter Monday 6th April 2026: KO 15:00
After the disappointment of hosting Bristol City on Good Friday at the Valley, Charlton travelled to Watford today in seek of three points to all but secure probable Championship status next year, away from the pressures of home. Will Mannion keeps his place but Charlie Kelman and Conor Coventry made way for Tyreece Campbell and Conor Coady in the starting lineup.
This one started brightly with end-to-end action. Tyreece Campbell found Lloyd jones in the box but his header from six yards was contested and only went up. Then Watford attacked down the right resulting in Will Mannion making a diving save, then moments later, claimed a cross to ensure a return to confidence.
Charlton had their opportunities to apply pressure but by twelve minutes in the Addicks had dropped deep and conceded outside of the box to Watford and their passing forced some last-ditch defending. When their pressure failed to provide an opening, Charlton looked effective at times in cutting through Watford’s rather open defence. On about 14 minutes, some slick long passing ground Greg Docherty in a central position and bearing down on Watord’s box. His pass on put Tyreece Campbell through into the box before his shot was blocked away. Moments later, Docherty was making waves again in front of goal. Watford marshaled him away from six yards before he gave it to Harry Clarke, who fed Luke Chambers for a curling effort from just inside the box on the right that went narrowly over the bar. Charlton were in the ascendancy and looked more fluid than usual going forward.
Twenty minutes had elapsed when Conor Coady played a long diagonal ball to find Campbell in space. He cut back and switched play to find Clarke on the other side. Next, a long Clarke throw into the box made it’s way to Campbell, who’s loose touch gave possession away and started the home side on the counter. Amari’i Bell was in a foot race with the Watford man who carried the ball down their right hand side to unleash a shot that forced Mannion into a very decent diving save. Two corners later, Watford’s possession resulted in a long Louza cross to the back post that struck the post, leaving the Charlton keeper scrambling. The rebound was eventually dealt with and Charlton escaped without consequence.
By 35 minutes Charlton had strung together a few testing attacks led by Captain Greg Docherty and Tyreece Campbell, the last of which came through a very creative Sonny Carey free kick, just outside the box and to the left. The ball was played short into Luke Chambers, then prodded into the centre of the box. Conor Coady played a dummy, allowing Lloyd Jones to flick the ball forward to find Docherty for a glancing header that unfortunately came back off the post. Only minutes later Watford earned a free kick on the Charlton right flank from some thirty yards out. The ball was swung in and Amari’i Bell’s touch on the ball fell kindly for Watford and the resulting shot beat Mannion all ends up. Forunately for the Addicks, the offside flag went up for an infraction on a player involved in the initial melée and ruled the goal out.
The first half was entertaining, with both sides having decent chances. Charlton would have been happy with their performance at both ends. Their attacking intent was obvious from the off and effective in a way it rarely is. Still, there were no goals to show for their efforts. Conversely, Watford had their moments of quality but they looked like a mid-table side with little to play for this season. In terms of atmosphere, the away following were loud and in good numbers, where the home side were largely subdued. The question was whether Charlton could persist, even improve further, and whether Watford were prepared to go up a gear in the second half.
There were no changes for either side to start the second half. Watford had a counterattack within the first couple of minutes that Will Mannion easily saved. But out of the gate, Charlton were a little under the cosh when Mannion pulled off a very good save from a Doumbia long shot that was pushed out for a corner. Charlton had some joy through Campbell on the counter but nothing that tested the Watford keeper.
Charlton made the first changes of match on 60 minutes, with Luke Chambers and Sonny Carey coming off for Matty Godden and Joe Rankin-Costello. Campbell shifted over to his less-preferred wingback position, with Godden joining Dykes up front. Rankin-Costello’s first touch was a lofted free kick into the box that split the Watford defence but despite the scramble no one in a fish-print, white and blue shirt could get on the end of it and the ball was cleared away for a throw in on the Charlton right. Harry Clarke’s long throw into the box was flicked on and it was the sniffer-dog Matty Godden that cleverly maneuvered into a yard of space right in front of goal, blasting Charlton into the lead from six yards.
Watford then had their backs up. They made an inspired substition that halted the Charlton momentum. A sustained bit of pressure led to a Iranakunda shot from thirty-something yards that cannoned off of Will Mannion’s crossbar. Just moments later, Matty Godden wrestled his defender off the ball, providing space for Rankin-Costello to burst away with the ball. Unfortunately, in bearing down on goal he lost his footing a bit and his makeshift shot was deflected away by the Watford keeper to extinguish the threat.
On about 72 minutes Watford worked the ball into the box on the Charlton right when Harry Clarke went to ground and the ball rolled over the hand he extended back beneath him to break his fall. The well-placed referee was unmoved despite the Watford appeals. Perhaps aggrieved, though I don’t think it was a penalty, Watford burst forward quickly through a Louza long ball to Irankunda on the Charlton left. At full pace he beat Amari’i Bell and his shot in the box left Mannion unable to keep it out; Watford were level. He had been Watford’s most potent threat, supplied by the creative inspiration of their captain, Louza. Watford were now in the ascendancy, forcing a number of good saves from Will Mannion over a five minute period.
On 79 minutes, Jayden Fevrier came on to relieve Lyndon Dykes, who had been relatively quiet. Coady dropped back and Bell moved a touch forward. Campbell and Fevrier then flanked Godden. At the same time, Irankunda also went off due to a leg injury that he had been nursing for the majority of the match, replaced by Tom Ince. When play resumed, a couple of Charlton corners asked questions of the Watford defence but Charlton couldn’t find the breakthrough then and there.
On the stroke of 90 minutes, Watford’s sustained pressure in and around the Charlton box ended with a pile driver of a shot that rifled through traffic and caught Conor Coady in the face with all the force of a prime MIke Tyson uppercut. From the replay it seems that the blow caught Coady completely unaware and he received more than a few minutes of attention before being stretchered off to a waiting ambulance. The stadium that had fallen completely silent in the moments after he first started to receive medical attention, burst back into life with applause and the singing of Coady’s name. Six minutes of additional time had been called before Coady had been taken off and replaced by Macauley Gillesphey.
When play resumed, Watford pushed for the winning goal. They prodded and poked but Charlton remained resolute. It was the away side that then pushed on through a Rankin-Costello counter. His first touch took him wide but Fevrier and Campbell supported him well and Charlton had the numerical advantage. Unfortunately, Rankin-Costello failed to release the ball in time and his shot was marshaled well and deflected away for a corner.
This one would finish even at a goal apiece. It was an entertaining, good performance but Charlton will be a little unhappy not to have contained Irankunda that little bit longer. He had been treated early in the match for an issue with what looked to be his hamstring and he went off for the same thing once he had scored. Will Mannion did everything to redeem his mistake last time out but pull off a wonder save to prevent the goal. Still, his performance was excellent. Another point nearer to safety as we look to see the season out successfully.
A last word for Conor Coady: hopefully he is alright and the manner in which he was stretched off was largely preventative. I’m sure we’re all be thinking of him as he recovers.
Watford 1 Charlton 1
Over to you.

Yikes 31 shots. Great point though, and great to see Godden scoring.

Don't look out of place in this league when we perform like that, though faded somewhat after taking the lead. Now if only we could score a second goal..29

So, what is the "R Factor"?0

Great point away, Watford have quality everywhere.
Irakunda looked a ridiculous talent and might be the quickest player I've seen in this league.
That Imrân Louza is the best player I've seen this season, I'd sit there erect every game if we had a player in the midfield that good.
Nice to see Godden score, Mannion with his best game for us, one point closer to safety and the points running out for teams below. One win from safety. Happy days.
Roll on Preston37 -
Looks like we are well and truly knackered, that last 30 minutes we barely won a second ball. Start of the season and we'd have shut up shop after going one nil up. Need this season to be over now.1

Another good point on the road, despite not being at our best. Unbeaten since that horrendous afternoon at The Den. Fair play to Mannion, superb today after his error against Bristol City. Easily MOTM.
Great to see Godden score again. Hopefully we can end the season with a few home wins.12 -
First half excellent, goal fantastic, rest of the second half not great. Not sure if Ed Still changed something up or what. Regardless it’s a good point against an established Championship side despite a few players having an off day3

Only 4 shots on target compared to their 10 but a much higher xG, shows that it's all about quality not quantity 😉8

Excellent point away from home. Mannion fully justified his selection and kept us in it.
Hope Coady ok.13 -
One more win and we're safe11

As much as it would’ve been nice to see Mannion getting the MOTM, I understand them giving it to Louza. He was absolutely everywhere and was responsible for everything Watford did well. One of those players where you should just put someone on him for 90 minutes, because they would’ve been toothless without him.
If Louza and Mannion aren’t both in team of the day, the world’s gone mad.9 -
Nine saves by Mannion. Not little dolly shots that he gathered in; they were nearly all great saves from fierce Watford efforts. And he commanded his box really well. Forget about the mistake against Brizzle, he’s our no 1 for the rest of the season and beyond.20

Next season definitely need to sign a player like Louza.
Unfortunate name but a good player.6 -
Great godden goal ,costello could have gave us a second on 2 occasions7

Any point away is good from here.
Preston is the key one for me. Need the players to be well up for that one. I would start Godden.12 -
I swear we could go into the last game 6 points clear of the bottom three and there'd be people saying one more win and we're safe!30

We lose a game and it is all anger, random threads about the manager and relegation is imminent. A decent point or win and the sun is out and everyone is content. We all need to be more Curbs.33

What we can now see is that;
Oxford gained a point on us but lost one compared to our result today. Portsmouth lost 2 today and also drew at Watford. Blackburn lost 2 today but gained 2 on us at watford. West Brom lost 2 and another at Watford, so that's a net gain of 5 in our favour!
Good result.7 -
Some people go completely off the deep end every time we lose. Unhappy home livescfgs said:We lose a game and it is all anger, random threads about the manager and relegation is imminent. A decent point or win and the sun is out and everyone is content. We all need to be more Curbs.1 -
All the best to Conor Coady for a speedy recovery.
His 500th game apparently.
Mannion was immense.10 -
They tend to be the same ones who if we win a week later will call Jones the messiah and announce that our promotion is inevitableMickeyBennett said:

One fewer game for those below to catch up. Rest of the results about as good as you could hope for. We looked decent value for a point and it is SO good to see Matty Godden back scoring.
One win will do it, I think - with that, there just isn't quite enough time for everyone below us to get to us, you would hope.11
