NJ came in and kept us up when relegation looked a certainty. He got us promoted the very next season. Now we're in the Champ with a bottom two budget and haven't been in the bottom three all season.
Imagine calling for him to be sacked numerous times during this period. Every time there's a bad run... My goodness.43 -
It’s mental. We’ve gone from survival in league 1 to survival in the championship in 2 and a bit years. And there are fans that have called for him to be sacked twice during that period - and they’re about to go again a 3rd time!Chunes said:NJ came in and kept us up when relegation looked a certainty. I’m not sure if it’s just a Charlton thing though. This is the modern football fan, anytime there’s a run of bad games the manager needs to be sacked, see it at loads of clubs.Reading for example, were 19th when they hired Leam Richardson in October, since then they’ve been the 5th best team in league 1 and are now 10th. But half their fans want him sacked because they’ve fallen away from the play offs! It’s maybe more of a modern society thing but no one has any patience anymore21 -
I don’t disagree with most of that . I just hate watching a team that can’t pass the ball to each other on the floor .NabySarr said:
More progressive football without the squad to do it will put us straight back in league 1. Said it before, he deserves the chance to evolve the team and his tactics, if neither of these things happen it would be fair for people to question his position, at the moment I think it’s just unfair to call for him to go based on what he’s achieved so far. But things will need to evolve no doubt as it’s not going to get any easier to succeed in this division should we stay up.6

Do people really think that Jones plan is to keep being a team that doesn’t create any chances? Of course it isn’t. And he absolutely deserves the chance to carry on from the base he’s built and make us a better teamBedsaddick said:

He's been talking of playing better football once we have the players to achieve it, I think he at least needs next season to try that.14

You are joking right ? I heard nothing but complaining about the matches . Clean sheets got us promoted not attacking football and as for doing it multiple times . Where ? He certainly didn’t play attractive football at Luton ( yes it was effective) I know many fans who support them as they are my local team and they hated his brand of football and just ask Stoke and Southampton fans what they think of his style . It wasn’t until Rob Edwards took over at Luton did they look a good footballing side .NabySarr said:

So for those who'll want to see Jones gone... Finding his successor will be easier said than done, but then the last five years we've spent in League One should be plenty of evidence to prove that.7 -

I really don’t remember many complaints at all in the January to May period where we played some good stuff. From late December onwards we scored the joint 2nd most goals in the league and got the 2nd most points. Personally I don’t care about attractive football. I just want a team that creates more chances than the opposition, as that’s how you win more games. The best way to do that on our budget is by playing more direct football, keeping our solid base, but getting better players and improving our existing players in attack and midfield4 -

I’m not saying we are that team yet, we’re miles off it. But that’s what Jones will be aiming to get to over the next few years. We have a solid base, but we need better players in wing back, midfield and attack to be a better attacking team, a different manager would change very little with this group. It’s going to take years to get there, just wish our fans had a bit of realism and patience instead of wanting a new manager every time we don’t win for a few games, thankfully our owners aren’t that silly anymoreBedsaddick said:

You ignore the fact that for us to go down we'd have to have taken probably 3 or fewer points from our last nine games, with a genuinely pretty favourable fixture list. If that happens, you don't just fire the manager, you fire him into the sun, ban him from entering South London again, salt the earth. If we pull off this relegation and they don't sack Jones I am going to turn up and boo us until they doForeverAddickted said:fenaddick said:

The last run of games have been beyond poor in terms of getting the points but to even be talking about sacking the Manager is ridiculous imo. Most people thought at the start of the season survival would be success and Im sure that we will not get relegated this season as too many teams below us have too much to do and that just wont happen. However Im also in the school of not wanting to watch the brand of football that we have been subjected to this season but Im hoping that was carried out on a needs must basis in order to survive. Lets remain in the Championship see what the window brings and hopefully develop a more entertaining style of football. If however we do reinforce with just a better class of attritional footballers then its a no from me but time will tell2

I hope all the talk of evolving over the summer is legit. Go and get some genuine pace in this side and evolve the midfield beyond workhorses that run around a lot but can't pick a pass in the main.9

Budgets will once again need to rise, to supply NJ with better players next season, as I'm sure the club is well aware.2

Think Charlton are the only fanbase who would want their most successful manager in 12 odd years sacked, in the same season where he’s currently exceeding the expectations set on him before the start of the season17

Appleton was certainly taking us down. NJ took us on a 12-game unbeaten run with a CB pairing of Hector and T. Thomas, one of whom went to the Ballerz league and the other was subsequently relegated to non-league.lordromford said:

The owners/board have more sense than some of our fans, with extremely short memories.
I wonder if they can remember 2 years ago, Appleton in charge, playing in front of a two thirds empty Valley and losing at home to Crawley and many other small clubs.8 -
Arguably, if we went down this season that would be more reason to keep him, next. With this squad and NJ in charge we'd sure be hot favourites to bounce back.fenaddick said:

I’m not a fan of his tactical approach and the type of football he’s chosen to play this season. I’ve said enough about that. But - if we stay up, he will have earned the right to have a summer of (hopefully supervised) recruitment and until Xmas at least, assuming we’re not in any serious trouble in the table. If these results and this football continues early into next season then the club will have a decision to make.Bedsaddick said:

From a solid base we became a team that scored goals and won gamesMy brother in law ( lifelong Luton season ticket holder) mentioned the first season he played more appealing football. It was when they were promoted through the league the tactics changed. He believes because the talent could not play the same passing style higher up the league. Mainly because playing above their 'natural' level. Sees the way we play as very similar. Most players we have are playing higher than they ever have, and do not have the consistent level of skill and technique to play around teams with better players. If we stay up, I hope we go in for upgrades to players, and if we do it will be interesting to see if Jones changes our style.5
