How Many points for Championship Survival? and How do we get them?

I think everybody forgets we are in a difficult league and teams go through runs of form, ours has come at the worst time.AberystwythAddick said:We were in such a commanding position 7 games ago. This collapse has been absolutely awful and both players and staff should answer for it.Regardless of if we survive or not this has been unacceptable. At the start of the season you probably would have thought we would maintain our form and push for the playoffs. It’s ok to be disappointed but half of our squad are playing their first full season in the championship, we have to be realistic.2 -
I think sometimes we all get a little bit carried away with the highs like the start of the season and then conversely get carried away with the lows.cafc_se7 said:

It’s ok to be disappointed but half of our squad are playing their first full season in the championship, we have to be realistic. The reality is we went up via the playoffs, ( which is a great way to get promoted), but we still weren’t promoted through merit rather than a cup run. We have the third lowest budget and it shows. But back last May most given the past few years would have taken this run in.7 -
If a club has a small budget and a relatively small squad of players who are up to the standard of the division, but is playing above itself and doing well, you'd expect the end of the season to be when it catches up with them. We knew it was going to be difficult. We still have a respectable chance of staying up. I'll take that.10

Huge credit to Nathan Jones for getting this team of league one players so close to survival, he's a phenomenal manager at this level. But Nathan Jones also has to take the flak on why this is a league one team, based on the awful signings in the summer.1

It’s not the players, it’s the gameplan and I suspect what happens, or doesn’t happen , on the training pitch. How the fuck Collins isn’t able to kick a ball straight or meaningfully if it has to go more than 5 yards is unfathomable. Has none of the coaching staff noticed he needs to work on that ? Why are we not creating more attempts on goal, does nobody actually practice shooting, or are they told not to ? (Our goal the other night came as a result of an extremely rare shot that was blocked and Doc was on hand to follow up - why aren’t we doing more of that ?).J BLOCK said:Huge credit to Nathan Jones for getting this team of league one players so close to survival, he's a phenomenal manager at this level. we ditched the static target man approach for the first half the other night and, despite their equaliser and the inevitable injuries we were looking pretty good I thought at Half Time. We were still fluid and it was a pretty good two way battle. If Campbell had to go off we should have brought Godden on that point and he and Kelman could have alternated between them to cover the left wing and centre forward roles. Instead we conceded the more fluid attack and let Ipswich take the initiative. In the end our only real answer was route one punts.
if we change nothing else we need to stop this ‘one more pass’ every time we get the ball in the opposition box and switch to if you’ve got the ball and can see the goal then take a shot.0 -
It is the players. Most managers in the league would be relegated with this squad.letthegoodtimesroll said:

People also need to remember that it was only 18 months ago that this team was going absolutely nowhere and we were losing to Exeter (now on the verge of relegation to league two) and Crawley (not far off relegation to the National league).Swindon_Addick said:If a club has a small budget and a relatively small squad of players who are up to the standard of the division, but is playing above itself and doing well, you'd expect the end of the season to be when it catches up with them. We've come a long way in a short space of time. If we stay up, then despite how the season has ended, it's job done and we go again.5 -
What's our record for consecutive home defeats?0

So if by sheer fluke I did call it right after the Birmingham game (even a stopped clock is right twice a day) it’s set up for Oxford to lose their last two games, Charlton will probably then unnecessarily win their last two games, we will the finish 12 points above the relegation spots, worrying about getting relegated will be forgotten like a bad dream that’s dismissed…until it happens again if lessons are not learnt from last season like the team sitting above us and the one directly below us ?letthegoodtimesroll said:In the clutching at straws category and personally not convinced it will still happen, we still haven’t got to a stage where me posting and telling people after the Birmingham result that the 44 points we hit that day may well be enough won’t be the case…

At least 47.
We'd be pooping our pants now if we had lost today.0 -
Evening all.
Hope all are relaxed and happy.
Just a query, do the end of Championship season positions count for anything, other than promotion and relegation ? It's £M's different in The Premier League, any benefits for pushing at Swansea next week ?1 -

There's no prize money in The Championship outside of promotion. Finishing anywhere beteeen 7th and 21st is exactly the same.Miserableoldgit said:Evening all.

The only argument anybody could make is that finishing 7th makes it easier to sign better players, but the difference is negligible as the wages a club can offer will play a much bigger part.2 -
BIG FAT FUCKING 0!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Close the thread.
Thank f#ck for that.0 -
48 points is the magic number unless Oxford get something against Millwall.
Without WBA and Leicester's points deduction it would have been at least 50 though. Without any deductions, we'd still be safe and Oxford still down, but Blackburn could be caught by Leicester in what would have been an epic final game of the season.
19 WBA 53
20 Charlton 53
21 Blackburn 52
22 Leicester 49
23 Oxford 470 -
Surely even golfie can’t have the hump tonight… maybe ?1

Thats good coming from someone who has Victor Meldrew as his avatar 😄gmantaxi said:Surely even golfie can’t have the hump tonight… maybe ?10 -
Noting on review that there is no direct response to the question and the answer indicates golfie did indeed have the hump last night.0

The league table isn’t over the last 22 games or games against 11 men. From the 34 games we’ve played, we are top of the bottom 7. We have more points than 6 other teams with one already relegated. Four teams need to better our points per game ratio for the rest of the season for us to get relegated.Athletico Charlton said:
0.82 ppg in our last 22 games is 38 points over a season.Todds_right_hook said:
Our form has not been bottom 2 for months. We had a bad run but always seem to pick up points. We have some difficult games and some winnable games. Oxford need to win 4 more games than us for the remainder of the season just to catch us, if we win one, they will need to win 5. That will be very difficult for them. Leicester need to gain 0.5 points a game on us. We are also above West Brom, Blackburn and Portsmouth. We will be fine. 21st will still be a good season for usAthletico Charlton said:I don't know what we do and you are right that we are not bottom 3. But our form for months has been bottom 2, let alone 3. We also have a pretty tough run in imo. The games we have just played needed a bigger points return as I don't see any from Wrexham, Birmingham and Boro (hope to be proved wrong straight away on Saturday!).
edit. Our points per game ratio is 1.2 points a game. That means Leicester need 1.7 points a game. We re on target for 55 points which will be more than enough
0.60 ppg in our last 20 games against 11 men is 28 points over a season
Both suggest bottom 2 form to me. That's our form since 8th November (ie for months).
I am happy to have a £20 bet for the Community Trust that we don't make 55 points, I would be even more happy if you end up winning it and I am the one who pays up.
we are in a good place and I’m confident we will stay up. Unfortunately I don’t bet anymore as I’ve seen what betting can do to people. But if we don’t get 55 points, I will happily donate to either the upbeats or the community trust
Cool, if we do get to 55 points I will donate £20 to each of the upbeats and Trust and we won't call it a bet. I will also be very happy we have stayed up.
Not bothered if we get to the 55 point total or not, my fear when I posted the above was that we would be relegated. So £40 gone off to The Community Trust this morning as an "early payout" on this non-bet.
Fair play to you for having more faith in the team than I did @Todds_right_hook2 -
Result:
- with Leicester’s deduction: 48
- without Leicester’s deduction: 53
Charlton’s final points total: 53
Blackburn would have been relegated on 52 points had Leicester not had 6 deducted.
Stoke 55 -5Portsmouth 55 -15
West Brom 53 -10
Charlton 53 -14
Leicester 52 -10

Blackburn 52 -14
Oxford 47 -142
