Kelman isn’t the issue. The best way to get the best out of him is to thread passes through to him. Playing hoofball is not the way. He is not a good header of the ball. If we had a Bannon time and we played quick passing football as most teams in this division play, I thing he would have doubled his tally.
Exactly. He was good against Ipswich and today.
we need to change the way we play and as other posters have said, and build around this.

Totally agree. Arguably, his penalty at Oxford and his goal today were amongst the most important knife-edge moments of the season.

Today we saw the Kelman that we paid a lot (for us) of money for - he put in the hard work, took defenders on and still came up with a peach of a finish as well. The "new Godden" label is a bit of a CL meme/inside joke but he genuinely did look the part today - hopefully next season he keeps this standard up.

Said before, but one of the things that sets him apart from almost all of our strikers since, probably Yann, is that he can properly twat a shot. That goal today showcased that perfectly.

Like a few of them, he seemed determined to make sure he won’t be playing in League One again next season. Really hope the rest of his game today is a sign of him getting properly to grips with the level because there is clear talent there if he can bring it all together consistently.

Let's not forget his winner against Oxford at the Valley either. They were shit but it was heading for a 0-0 until he came off the bench to score. That alone was a 3 point swing on Oxford.

When you break down what we have seen this season, there is every reason to suggest with a better midfield behind him he can be a 15 goal a season striker at this level for us.

He can score tap ins, belters from 30 yards, tricky finishes where he has a lot of work to do, and he is confident from the spot.

He also scored a few with his head at Orient.

I honestly think long term he will be the best of last summers signings career wise by a stretch

Wouldn't it be six points? Three more for us, three less for them.

Good to see him get physical and prove he has that part to his game , too many times he hasn’t shown that and will hopefully kick on   if we do the unthinkable and get some genuine footballers with attacking class and intent in the team .

I’d like to see the whole build up again, from recollection he initially holds the ball up, prior to
    Coady’s (?) sublime pass.

It's not just the quality of the midfield/service he gets, but having a formation which plays to his strengths.  Yesterday the setup was similar to Orient's last season,  with space for CK to work the channels, pulling defenders around more

He’s played well the last few. Amazing what happens when you lean into a player’s strengths.

No, if it stayed as a draw we each would have 1 point. His goal meant that we got an extra 2 points and they got 1 less point, a swing of 3 points.

Also helps giving a player a run in the team to play himself into form, too often he’s played well then come out the team for a month

He doesn't score many tap ins. Made most of his own goals for orient.
I've given him a bit of stick in the past for not bombing into the 6yard but it's not really his game.
He likes to drop a bit deeper and give himself a bit more to do.

People who are saying he should have played more - would we have got that performance from him yesterday if he hadn’t been dropped and had limited minutes throughout the season?

I’m not forgetting some of the stinkers he had this season.

Kelman has criticised his own attitude in interviews this year. That was his best performance yesterday (he still tired and didn’t look that lively in the second half), but it doesn’t mean the rest of the year doesn’t count. Hopefully we see that type of display much more regularly next year.

Thought he was outstanding yesterday.  His best game in a Charlton shirt & capped it off with an absolute Worldie.

    3 million down the drain
    Charlie Kelman scores again

hasn't contributed anywhere near enough when he's been in the side this season but my god, yesterday he showed us everything we wanted to see and i think it could have a big impact on how NJ shapes the side in the transfer window

That could and maybe should be the EFL goal of the season. Reminiscent of Luis Suarez in his pomp.

Wasn't even the best goal scored yesterday in the EFL, let's not get ahead of ourselves here
  • Charlie is one of my favourite current Addicks and he is slightly one-dimensional in the sense that his major strength is playing in the channel or balls through the middle but given the step up from League One he’s done very well. All the talk about the price tag but the goal he scored on Saturday has made us and saved us more than we paid for him - so I’m made up it was him who contributed to the win at the weekend. Just need that creative midfielder to play those more risky passes into his feet and we’ll see a better CK next season.

Always felt it was harsh on him that he was bombed out of the starting lineup so soon after his brace at Blackburn. His confidence would've been sky high after that game.

He was hauled off at half time in the next league game despite Sheff Utd being down to 9 men and it making more sense to keep him on. Then he started 1 game in the next 2 months.

I thought he was really good against Ipswich as well in the first half, seems like he's learned how to bully defenders better, running channels and making them suffer under the ball over the top which is the big thing that's been lacking in his game. It's what makes Godden good as well, the physical part of his game is what allows him the space to show his technical ability and we've seen the classy touches, flicks and shots he can pull off once he carves that opportunity out for himself.

For all he's been in and out of the side, Jones clearly rates him to at least a certain extent as he kept him around and gave him more chances which Olaofe and Apter did not get (and there is no chance someone wouldn't have taken him on loan if they could.)

Hopefully our signings and squad over the course of the summer help create a side he thrives in. Most of this season we've been begging for a cutting edge up front and potentially he could be just that.
  • Watching his goal back, it only happens because he reacted first to a ball out of our box - he heads it back to Coady. If he doesn't make that header he gets no ball forward into space for him to run on to. That's the part of his game that's got better, and hopefully keeps improving.

Kelman has a shot accuracy this season of 68%. The best of the top 25 scorers in the Championship is 50%. Haaland's is 46%.

The issue is that he has only had 28 shots. That is mainly due to a lack of game time, compared to all those other strikers, plus a void of creativity within our side. Hopefully both will be resolved next season.

Whittaker's free kick, Banel's goal for Derby both better

No doubting his eye for goal but I thought the game on Saturday was his “coming of age” moment, in the second tier at least. He gave the defenders the run around all afternoon.

It’s taken the length of the admittedly interrupted season to change my mind but I’m delighted to see him growing as a player as I desperately hoped but sometimes doubted he would.
