Doesn't sound like the words of a man who didn't like him and holds a grudge against him.LargeAddick said:Nice words from NJ in his post match presser.
He could easily have just said something non committal like he did when asked about JRS, or even something scathing like he did when asked about Kaminski, but instead he spoke for almost 2 minutes about how great a character he was, how he was the one that drove the playing side of the club in culture and passion, and how he should go down in the annals of this club as a legend and someone who should get a great reception every time he comes back21 -
Have felt a degree of guilt when discussing his limitations to be honest as the guy gave his all in every game. A real shame he had to move on but as all others have said will be a player that we have fond memories of and will always be welcome back to the Valley. Thank you Doc, you were pivotal in leading our revival on the field when things were starting to feel pretty desperate. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 👋🏻8

Id tend to agree that to get to where we need to be we need better than Doc, however when you take in to consideration we have kept -SDAddick said:
What is his grudge with Doc? There was a rumoured falling out last year but then Doc played a lot after that. Not sure this is a grudge, I think this is just a case of evolving beyond a player.Weegie Addick said:NJ does love to hold a grudge it seems
Mwama (could be great and has looked good last couple games but still untested, personally dint have a problem with giving youth a chance)
JRC (who hardly got a look in last season and most his appearance were as a sub)
Ouma (again an unknown quantity that we seem to have to get fit before he can make the squad)
Ollie Skipp (widely derided by leicester fans and was relegated last season)
Was Doc worse than all these ?5 -
You are incorrect, what evidence could you possibly have that he is worse than Mwamba, Skipp, Ouma?Stu_of_Kunming said:

If he is worse than JRC then why did NJ play Doc more last year?0 -
It’s an opinion, not a fact, Skipps entire career stats suggest he has more to offer than Doch going forwards, Mwamba is young, doesn’t take up a squad space and needs to the space to grow, something Doch would have hindered if he was playing ahead of him.Ouma is the biggest question mark but showed last night that he has the potential to be a lot more progressive, only time will tell.
Whilst no one can be sure who is better right now, I’m confident come the end of the season we will see it was the right decision.
you also need to consider the human element here, would Docherty want to be a big part player of the bench, like JRC has been so far? If no, releasing him and allowing him to get the minutes he wants is just the decent thing to do.11 -
It’s a sad reality of improving as a side you do have to shed players that can’t do it as well as others.2
-
I think of him as our equivilent to Mike Brearley.
The team always played better with him on the pitch, even if he was having a 'quiet' game.

Greg Docherty spent 2 Years and 2 months at Charlton and what ever anyone thought of him as a footballer he must be one of the fittest player to have represented CAFC. 40 and 39 appearances is testament to his availability.
He did the hard yards on the pitch with closing down angles and getting blocks in. He was made Captain it seems straight away and he led our team with pride.
It does feel the right time for Greg and Charlton to move on but unlike so many ex players that have left the Valley, the 'Adult Children' that boo the departed when they become the opposition should all give Greg a standing ovation 👏🏻👏🏻
Is Greg going back to Scotland or is he settled down South ? He will go where the work is.
30 years old next Thursday, he could play on for at least 6 seasons with his natural fitness.
Mark Kinsella, Jason Pearce and Greg Docherty have all been captured in a moment in time when they held the play off Trophy aloft.
Beautiful 😍 moments.

A knee jerk reaction from someone that doesn't grasp the idea that football clubs and players move on.
His comments about Jones seem rather juvenile.
Jones is many things but a terrible manager is not even close to being one of them.
I would imagine Greg Docherty doesn't hold those views and looks back with justified pride at his part in the advancement of the club and will have no trouble continuing with his career and giving another fortunate club the benefit of his fantastic professionalism.

Greg Docherty was one of the nicest blokes I ever met who played for Charlton, him and Josh Edwards went out of their way when I took a couple of my boys to the training ground a while back .
genuinely nice people .
also he won man of the match when we lost 1-2 against Preston near the end of last season and he was absolutely devastated and gutted at the result.
A real class act of a man and despite his limitations as a player one I will think of fondly in years to come.

It's not about better or worse, but different. Docherty could do plenty of things that JRC can't, and vice versa. It's a managers job to get the best blend, not simply the best individuals. Peter Garland was one of the most gifted footballers I've seen play for Charlton. He played in 53 league games in total for us and very few games elsewhere in his career. He was "better" than most of the other players in the squad at that time.Radostanradical said:

Thought Jones' comments in his post match interview about Doc were absolutely genuine and heartfelt. He seems genuinely gutted that he has had to let him go. Doc was the right man at the right time and exactly what we needed in terms of his personal qualities and leadership skills.16

They were fairly off the cuff too, he wasn’t a reading a written statement or anything he was saying what he feltsirjohnhumphrey said:Thought Jones' comments in his post match interview about Doc were absolutely genuine and heartfelt. People got very excited in the summer when Jones talked about being ruthless but the reality of it isn't always that nice. It's easier when it's Gillesphey or Mitchell who just aren't quite at the level but the club captain who played 40 games last season is a tough one. It's a testament to how much we've done in the transfer window that we brought in 3 new CMs and have chosen to develop a youth product to leave no space for Doc8

This is a fair point, suppose ypu can make similarities to his decision to get rid of alfie may?SporadicAddick said:

I thought Jones’s post match comments about Docherty were genuine and heartfelt and, looking in from the outside as a fan, absolutely well deserved.9

Came in with the team virtually at an all time low and helped the manager to haul the club by the scruff of its neck back to The Championship and survival. Captained a Wembley winning team and was a great leader and role model. Still a lot to offer some lucky club.13

Gutted but can understand the clubs position. A limited player but his work rate and energy is what helped get us over the line in the promotion year and last season. He took his role as captain very seriously and behind the scenes had a very positive impact at the training ground. Will be missed. Good luck Skip!6

Yes although later developments suggest there may have been non football factors in that move as well.Radostanradical said:

I think there was a bit of a falling out that lasted a while when Doc took that penalty against WBA at the Valley but Jones said very nice things about him the other day. It is probably the team moving to a level above him or playing in a way where it doesn't suit him. I think he would be a great signing for a SPL club.SDAddick said:

Your Kinsella reference underlines the need to know when to move someone on, however much of a legend they are2 -
Good summation- I don't think anyone will boo-(who's got a brain)Chunes said:I'll never forget the pain of watching Charlton teams, season upon season, not battling, not doing the basics, not playing with any fight or passion. Doch's captaincy seems like a big part of the change that turned the tides for us. He was not really my cup of tea as a player, but I couldn't fault the leader and he's played a huge role in getting us where we are now.
I'm hoping he's one of the few Charlton players who doesn't get booed upon their return.0 -
Can he sign for a team in England now? I think most of league one would be fighting to get him0

Nice write up on Cawleys subtract.
Doc signed because he witnessed NJ saving a seagull on holiday, what an odd story haha.10
