Probably makes the defeat worse to take. I'm signing off.

    Can't defend the indefensible.

That topped what has been a succession of poor performances. Shit, inept and blatantly unqualified ref aside, we got what we deserved from tonight, bugger all!

At the end Parkinson said that we have to reverse the trend on saturday and at least grind out a win. Well no shit sherlock, we've needed to be doing that for some time now and if it's taken you this long to spot it, then something is seriously wrong.

I know it's at home and I know it might not sit comfortably with some, but in my opinion we have to play a five man midfield on Saturday. I think that Bailey and Semedo must play in the middle either alongside Racon or at least with Racon sitting in front between them and the striker. Jonjo is of course another option in this position.

We are being out fought too easily in midfield at the moment and unless we dig in and reverse that, then even the play offs could be a distant dream. Boring it may be, negative possibly, but we simply have to start winning and I'd rather be doing that by the odd goal, then not at all.

The one that pissed me off was Burton getting booked for getting shoved into their keeper.

Agree KB, 4-5-1 it has to be, should have been that tonight in all fairness

    Sam Racon Semedo Bailey Reid

    Burton

(use Shelvey at home for Racon or Semedo)

Early in the season Semedo was first to the loose balls and then played a simple pass to Shelvey or Racon.

In my view he has been poor for quite a few matches and we have been outfought in midfield as a consequence which in turn has led to this run of indifferent form.

I like the bloke so am not trying to make him a scapegoat but this is how I see it.

Parky said pre-match they were going to go for it from the off, they were low on confidence, it would knock them even more.

Nope, typical Charlton don't do things easy. Don't start Reid & gift them a goal with non existent marking of the biggest bloke in Bristol.

Their confidence clearly grew from that. Poor tactics for all to see

Agree again LG, don't think Semedo has been at the races for a few games, lacking vs Orient and ended up rightly out of the team for a while though it doesn't seem to have done him any favours

Honestly, I can just about take the ineptitude of our performance tonight. The team simply have neither the ability nor the bottle to get out of this division.

What worries me is, without some new, long term investment in our club, we are looking at administration or worse.

To be fair to Parky the injury to Basey threw that plan out the window. Solly is most likely going to be a good player but he looked very nervous early on and the vocal home crowd got to him. Bailey could see that and kept having to drop back to give him support. I agree with the 4-5-1 suggestions. Sam, Racon, Bailey, JS and Reid. It's what brought us results early on in the season and offers more protection to a low on confidence defence.

But you are saying by that, if we win 5-0 at home then drop jonjo for semedo or racon for the next away game. Would you really think that was good management if he done that and we lost the away game ???

Can't disagree Len, but for the crucial bit of your summary was that after winning the ball Semedo was able to play a simple ball to Racon/Shelvey or even Bailey. At the moment there is no-one within twenty yards of any Charlton player winning a ball, which usually means the opposition can close our payers down far to easily and any pass we do manage goes backwards or is hoofed hopefully.

For any team to have a successfull midfield, it must play as a unit at least centrally and as far as I can see, we currently have four midfield players operating individually.

to be fair I see your point re-reading my post Uncle, I just meant that would be my basic model, obviously if individual/team performances merited keeping the same team then that's how it should be

Just got back, shit cold, shit match and some embarassing performances out there. Guy should have been off in 20 seconds for that 'tackle' on Grant, and we needed to get some shots away. They would win 10/10 if we gave them that many chances without making any ourselves.

Worried for the play offs spots with that performance, we'd lost the game from the first 5 mins ffs.

just got back. I never get carried away by the scoreline as it's always the performance for me. I thought we were excellant tonight from back to front. The centre half pairing looked solid, midfield was creative and full of running, the wide players got at their fullbacks all game and up front Sodje and Burton looked lively. We created so many chances it was emabarrassing and their keeper was world class. The post rescued them on a couple of occasions and a couple of goaline clearances kept us out too. Sometimes it just isn't your night but it was a performance to be proud of. Parky is now showing that when the going gets tough he's the man to sort it out. Well done all.

ps all the best Grant for a speedy recovery.

don't listen to Large, he slept throught the whole game ! lol

my take on tonight is thus:

    1) Why play Bailey out wide left & leave Reid on the bench - Reid has been one of the better players since he joined us & the reason he joined us in the 1st place was that it weren't working with Bailkey out wide.

    2) Burton had his worse game for us & I can't understand how a striker can play 90+ mins without having an atempt on goal.........even Sodje (A) had 2 headers and a shot !!

3)Parky (supposedly) said we were going to get at them from the off...........TOTAL SH*T. The Basey tackle after 10 secs gave us he perfect cahnce to have a shot at goal, but what happens.............Richardson (why?) dinks a ball in even my nan could have saved. 2 mins later Bailey has a go and he fires one into the wall. WHAT DO THEY DO IN TRAINING FFS !!!!!

    4) Why did Sam (right footed) swap to the left with Reid (Left foted) swapping to the right ??????????? Sam isn't very good on the right, but he's worse on the left !!!!

    5) Parky's composure ??? With 10 mins to go why was he not urging the team on - running to the edge of the technical area shouting instructions, having a moan at the lino Warnock style...........instead he stands there, arms folded, like he's watching a practice game.

can't go on anymore - must get to bed. Will post more tomorrow !

I thought we were unlucky. The first 12 seconds had a big bearing on the result. As soon as Blizzard hit Basey, it looked like a broken leg. As anyone knows who has played at any level, once there is a broken leg in your team, it takes some time to re-focus - it doesn't matter that they are professionals, it still has an effect.

We didn't compete in the first 30 minutes and the first goal was gifted by a team whose mind was not on the job. Just before half time, some half chances started to come and a penalty could have meant that we were 1-1 at the break.

After the break, we looked the better side and I felt that one goal would turn the game right round. It didn't come and Bristol Rovers out-thought us by making the last 20 minutes more of a scrap than a game of football.

We undoubtedly have weaknesses, but then so does every team at this level. The defence didn't look too tight - it really does need to keep a blank sheet soon - and the midfield was not at its most creative. It's hard to judge Burton's effort on television, as you cannot see his contribution without being there. But, Bristol Rovers played to their limited strengths well and held on.

I think it was 'one of those nights' to a great extent. Another time, we would have trotted out winners. My bigger concern is that if we do have to face the play offs, we may struggle against teams that are ready to just slug it out.

There is still plenty of time to sneak past Leeds. They are not going well at the moment. I would just like to see us have a run of games without conceding (m)any goals. If we can get a run going, Leeds will not fancy coming to The Valley at the end of the season.

Obviously we were shit, no denying that, and we have been for the best part of two months but I do wish we would play to our strengths.

The fact is we dont have TWO strikers that are worth picking on a match by match basis. Burton was dogshit last night but generally his hold up play and penalties should make him a shoe inn. Akpo and Mooney shouldnt be anywhere near the starting 11 in my opinion, I still think McKenzie has shown enough potential to be the impact sub from the bench.

Our midfield, although completely outfought last night, is on paper one of the best in the division, especially when we play 5 and have the extra man. Whether that is Jonjo or Bailey just behind Burton, or Semedo sitting in front of the back 4 I dont know, but the fact is our midfield doesnt seem as strong without the extra man and we are inviting pressure on ourselves which the defence are not coping with.

There is more chance of a 13 year old lad watching his first porno keeping a clean sheet than our lot. Personally I would contemplate dropping Dailly, but that either means Llera or a loanee we cant afford (can Jon Fortune help us out for half pay), Richardsons distribution is woeful, maybe bring Solly in there when Youga is back, who knows, its ifs and buts but the manager has got to fooking sort this mess out or we are going to be looking at Huddersfields results rather than Leeds.

I stand by my prediction post Carlisle that we wont make the play off's.And if we play 442 we have to start with Mooney in the team.Let's see
playing 442 how many points we have picked up when he started as opposed to when he was benched.Although i would go back to 451

The Sven style of standing at the dug out in silence just doesn't work anymore Parkinson. Time to say some words during the game I think, just to reassure fans that you do actually care. We know you're shy but just one or two words please.

As I said on the matcg thread I want to like parky but finding it very difficult at the mo, to me and shoot me down at will we are aloud our own opions, its all going very pardew esque... parky talks a good game during the week, then if were not 2 up by 15mins we resoet to the long ball, we had a great start because teams couldn't handle our passing game but once we got done at colchester teams found out 'we don't like it up us' we have plan A, nice passing game as soon as it gets tough plan B HHHHOOFFFFF we have no plan C, substitutions baffling again at times Ried needed to come on at half time, akpo had our best effort from a cross from sam so should have focused on that.. still, point was parky was pardews number 2 and sadly he is starting to transform into him, and lastly what exactly do our coaches get paid to do during the week?surly posisting at corners, crossing and finishing are high on the agenda??
