MATCH PREVIEW: Blackburn Rovers vs. Charlton Athletic - Sunday 4th January 2026: 3pm Kick-Off

A draw today is clearly not a bad result and the majority of football fans would be content to take a point prior to kick off.
Who would be happier sharing the points Blackburn or Charlton?
But yes on paper, it is one of the easier remaining away games so it would be great to win it.
I reckon Nathan Jones would take the point now if it were possible, as he would understand that it would be a good point and it is not a must win game.8 -
As I said the other day…se9addick said:
“Must win” is really reserved for a match that you need to win to get promoted/clinch a playoff place/avoid relegation/win a cup. If you describe everything as a must win, when in reality not winning would only leave you in a marginally worse position than you currently are, you don’t really understand what a must win match actually is.DamoNorthStand said:
It was. That’s my point.fenaddick said:
But I thought the last one was a must win not a free hit?DamoNorthStand said:Must win.
You can’t have free hits without must wins.If the last game was a free hit, this is a must win.
We keep coming up with reasons why we don’t need to win a game. No more dicking around - win it, take three points home, get away from the relegation zone.
Personally think this is a do not lose but reckon we'll sneak a win anyway
I said it was must win. Most said it wasnt.
Therefore this one must be a win.
At some point we have to win multiple games of football. So therefore there has to be multiple games coming up that we have to win.Why not this one?Surprised some people are struggling with the meaning of the word “must” so much to be honest.6 -

A must not lose game against a side in my opinion that will be one of 4 teams looking to avoid those last 2 relegation places.
A performance like we did in the last game should see us bring something back to London, provided we are more clinical in front of goal.4 -
NB if Sheff W, Norwich, Portsmouth, Oxford, Swansea, WBA & Sheff U are/were all must win games both home & away, we would collect 42 points from them 7 alone.2
-
We beat West Ham 4-0 in a must win game in 06/07. We got relegated and they survived.
If we get 50 odd points I expect we’ll stay up, regardless of where we get the points from.
Coventry was a game I said I’d take a point. This is one where I wouldn’t as on paper it’s an easier game and drawing against the league leaders gives me more hope this is the start of a turnaround on our form.4 -

We lost to one of those teams a couple of matches ago and we’re still not relegated, so I disagree that counted as a must win. Now if it was the final game of the season and we were 22nd in the table, playing Portsmouth two points ahead of us in 21st I would absolutely agree that it was a must win game. On the 29th of December with half a season’ish left to play? Not at all.shirty5 said:A must not lose game against a side in my opinion that will be one of 4 teams looking to avoid those last 2 relegation places.

I never said today is a must win, as I also said for the Portsmouth game.se9addick said:

Hmm... Cawley is half an hour from Blackburn, and its currently snowing on the M61
-
Snow really starting to come down, can see this getting called off.3
-
Guess we'll need to wait for the Referee to show up, before anything gets decidedThankfully he's from Lancashire, so hopefully had the sense to get there and start inspecting matters early.0

Nevermind, must have gone through some kind of snow portal, 2 mins of further driving and the sun is out and no snow in site.Braziliance said:Snow really starting to come down, can see this getting called off.
Don't bottle it Blackburn6 -
I’m 10 miles away and it’s blue sky. Bolton going ahead at 12 so fingers crossed1

Blackburn have already had two games (?) abandoned this season, because their pitch is shite...follett said:I’m 10 miles away and it’s blue sky. Bolton going ahead at 12 so fingers crossed1 -
A Rovers fan tweeted half an hour ago that it was blue skies and sunny so everything crossed2

Portsmouth v Ipswich called off0

The last Millwall away game I went to (new Den) was played on a snow covered pitch and we won 2-0, Kim Grant scored both goals.1

Yeah I know but wasn’t that for rain and aren’t championship clubs forced to have protection against frozen pitches under EFL regulations although Sheff U clearly messed up ..ForeverAddickted said:

Definitely the case for Premier League teams... Not so sure about EFL regulations, especially with the amount of games already called offfollett said:
