  • Boom! The Sox are ALCS bound and I am going to work on no sleep. Now I can sit back and enjoy a Tigers v A's decider. Uehara came up with the goods with a tense save to bounce back. Some of my best Sox memories are ALCS games (inc 2004 of course) so am up for this.

    That 2004 ALCS was unbelievable.
I'd been to Fenway for the first time earlier that season and got a nice souvenir cup with Curt Schilling and Derek Lowe on it. Schilling was awesome that post season - (With the bleeding ankle making him a Red Sock both nominally and actually!)
And the team spirit of the Sox to come back in such a way - the Yanks were strutting around like they'd already won in game 4 (and they even resorted to cheating in game 6 [Yes, it was A-Rod, no surprise there] to no avail) - but the Sox pulled through. Incredible drama. Beautiful result.
There was no way the Sox would lose the World Series after that performance. That's the way to end a curse.

  • Well done BoSox. Brave man to bet against them taking the WS with home advantage.
Despite being at Busch and with Wainwright on the mound, it's a tough assignment for the Cards tonight against Cole, who shut them down in game 2. Should be a cracker and could easily go to extras.
    COYRedbirds.
  • wonder if Cole will have the same effect now that the Cards' batters have had a good look at him?

    should be a good 'un.
  • Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees

Three Championship games in three years

    Go Cards
  • Wow. Bad luck to the Bucs......oh sod that.......You're not singing any more!!
    Bring on Brooklyn!
  • So the NL Championship is St Louis Cardinals v Brooklyn LA Dodgers

While the AL Championship is Boston Red Sox v Detriot Tigers

Winners over 7 games face each other in the world series

First game tonight at St Louis

Card and Red Sox will be favourites as both had the best records in their leagues and so both have home advantage but the Dodgers were strong all year and the Tigers have the pedigree to win it having reached the world last year.

Cards v Red Sox WS would be fantastic and a chance to avenge the 2004 sweep but the Dodgers are a formidable obstacle.
Matheny's made the right call giving the ball to Kelly tonight instead of Lynn.
Fascinating match ups for games 1 & 2: Greinke v Kelly and Kershaw v Wacha. Should be a cracking series.
  • Verlander had Oakland in his pocket last night.
Never looked in doubt and the crowd knew it.
Shame for the A's but Detroit are the better side and probably deserved it.

Both the Championship series look fascinating now. So tough to call.

    Come on you Red Sox!
  • anyone but the Cards

I will be interested to see who pitches up against Verlander. If it's Clay or Jonny Lester bets are it won't be a high scoring game! Fancy this to go the distance, just hope that Fenway advantage gives the Sox the edge. And I beg we get the cards in the series. I am in Dallas for the duration of the world series and my client is a partner of mlb. Will go to busch if it is Sox v Cards.

Q: What is the difference between a Braves fan and a baby?
A: The baby will stop whining after a while.

    Shut it Peanuts!

  • Carlos Beltran......MVP, MVP, MVP
  • 1-0. Sensational pitching by the Cards. 2 up in the series, Kershaw beaten, Waino up next in LA.
Blimey the Dodgers are a pushover!......shut it Peanuts.... ;o)

Wow, what an amazing win for the Red Sox tonight! They come back from 5-0 down to win 6-5. Big Papi hits a 1st pitch grand slam with 2 out in the 8th to tie it at 5-5, allowing the winning run to be scored in the 9th. On to Detroit now.

And that is why I love this sport. Lgrs!!!!

I remember Danny Baker saying something similar to this after that Man City QPR game.

There are some people out there who dont watch Baseball. Those, poor poor bastards.
  • HO-LY COWWW.......Sole survivor of the 2004 "Idiots", the big man does it again. Great stuff.

    Absolutely 100% right.
In all honesty, it does take a bit of time to get into, but once you get it, it really pays you back with interest.
But some of those who don't bother would say baseball is 'shit' or that it's just 'glorified rounders'.
They don't know what they're missing.

Exactly. Look at how popular the Ashes thread is on here (the closest UK sport I could find). I love my cricket, but that clip of Ortiz smashing a grand slam to tie the game had scenes that I dont remember at any cricket game.

  • I think that you actually have to go watch a game to get what it is all about. I found myself wandering past Fenway Park one Sunday back in the early 1980s, only to realise that a game against the Yankees was about to start. I managed to buy a ticket on the door & wandered in to find my standing spot right at the back of the bleachers. The next 4 hours were just totally captivating & I've been a great Red Sox fan ever since. The atmosphere & the whole experience is just so American, but such great, great fun. For any doubters, just get yourself to a game & you will understand what all the fuss is about.

That atmosphere at Fenway exudes all over the City so just watching a Red Sox game on TV while in a Boston hotel room more than a decade ago did it for me - hooked, line and sinker. Only live games I've seen were at Shea and Citi Field and they were great fun but, I guess because the Mets are the Mets, I don't think they'd have got a newbie all that excited......mind you the Nathan's footlong might have ;o)

I watched the Red Sox win the world series in a sports bar in florida, even in there the atmosphere was buzzing. Been watching them ever since

Feel free to disagree but the more I see the replay of that grand slam last night the more I fancy that, in his prime, Hunter might just have robbed the big man - would have been an all-time great play and he would still have ended up in the bullpen of course (probably crippled for life) but he used to make truly astonishing saves.

Dodgers looked liked they would never score in game 2 but the Cards won that one with just two hits. Can't expect to keep winning games without some sort of offensive threat. Four hits last night

    Keeps it interesting at least

    Card 2 - 1 Dodgers
  • I watched extended highlights of the Boston win last night and one thing that really struck me was how the Tigers team were congratulating Scherzer in the dugout once he'd finished his stint.
They looked to me like they thought they'd already won.
This could end up haunting them. (fingers crossed!)
  • Still hopeful the Dodgers will come back after the win last night but Cards still NLCS favourite. Great pitching by both Lackey & Verlander tonight but Red Sox now favourites in the ALCS
  • Lackey was utterly immense to edge Verlander. Begging for this for the Sox. Will be going to game 3 or 4 at Busch if we get the cards.
  • Cards 3 - Dodgers 1 Only one game away from another world series but still had fewer hits than LA

Looks like it could be a Cards v Red Sox Series. Chance to revenge the 4 - 0 defeat of 2004
  • These LCS match ups aren't done yet Henners. I fancy the Sox/Tigers to go to 7 games and even the Cards can't start celebrating just yet!

    I love this game.
