Always good to beat those bastards, their bad winners and even worse losers! Melbourne will be fun today! I hope we win in Sydney just to really get under their skin!
we were supposed to leave melboure this morning after watching days 1-3 but delayed the great ocean road trip a few hours to witness us retain the ashes. 31 dollars for an hour's play, money well spent. lap of honour had us choked. feels better than the play off win at the moment.
melbourne is the nuts. lets hope sydney is as much fun and we see the series won outright.
strauss is king. we even cheered siddle smacking swann for six! )
Great Ocean road is shit mate, the Aussies will try and make anything in to a tourist attraction. Oh look a rock that looks a little like London Bridge...

Agreed. Seriously underwhelmed. In fact, the whole city is 'meh'.

Look at you two trying to put a dampner on poor old Les' moment of euphoria!
One question. Where would you rather be right now - there or here? I rest my case.

I quite like Melbourne, but only due to the sporting events which occur there, and yes i agree that AFL is utter shit! It's night life is very poor but i still rate it over Sydney, although the Sydney/Melbourne debate is very 50/50 and down to personal opinions.
To answer off it, if I could choose the 2014 World Cup in Rio or the Ashes in Australia I would pick the ashes, I said the same before this year's world cup. The MCG is one of my fav stadiums in the world, i've seen Potting & Hussey get centuries there and seen Mcgrath & Warne bowl there, the day only cost AU$30 or so! I would love to be there with the Barmy Army.
Sydney isn't as pom-friendly as Melbourne. Nightlife-wise, all Aussie cities are turd compared to London, so that's a moot point for me. One thing Melbourne does have going for it is the Crown - best casino I've been to outside Vegas (largely due to the number of idiot Aussies who can't play cards worth shit and are willing to donate their wage packets to you). As for the rest of it - it's ok, but deadly dull in the main. Highlight of my recent trip was seeing Rodney Rude live at some crappy TAB in the 'burbs. Now THAT is the 'real' Australia

it looked pretty f**kin special from the helicopter we were in this morning.
melbourne is a great city. i've got no idea what 'meh' means.....
Ricky Ponting ruled out of Sydney due to an aggravation of his broken finger. Vice Captain Michael Clarke will replace Ponting as skipper, with Usman Khawaja being drafted in as the extra batsman. Doug Bollinger is recalled to replace the injured Ryan Harris.
This could be make or break time for Clarke - out of form with the bat, he could prove to be one of those who thrives on the responsibility of the captaincy. Let's hope he doesn't start to thrive until after England have made it 3-1!
As for Ponting, he wants to carry on but if Clarke does well, it may prove to be the end of the line for him as captain and possibly as a test player too.

That's the thing though. It might look great from a helicopter - but they advertise it as a 'road'. Anything looks great from a helicopter! I did the drive a couple of weeks back, and it was 'meh'. Yes it's better than the M25. So what? Hanging Rock, on the other hand, is fantastic - but even that's 60ks outside Melbourne itself. The natives go on about everything there like it's the best thing since sliced bread - but the simple fact of the matter is that any European city of note has more going for it then ten Melbournes. It's just a CBD with a lot more suburbs than usual.
We drove from Melbourne to Apollo Bay, then stopped at our b&b and then drove to 12 Apostles today. We walked to the viewing platform, took tons of pics of a beautiful site then decided to view it via helicopter. The road is great - We saw a kangaroo on the way at the side of the road (alive) and I think i saw a red panda on the way back (something red and furry by a bush - gonna look up if it was possible to see one in the area) but every twist and turn of the road inland or on the coast was great. coming out of a clearing on the winding road to see a beautiful bay basking in the sunshine was spectacular. but each to their own. I dont find the natives at all boastful of their surroundings, in fact the opposite.
anyway, its nearly 11pm, and we've got another drive up the great ocean road tomorrow back to melbourne to catch a flight to sydney in 39 degree heat. Can't wait.
just looked it up, dont think it would have been a red panda, before someone corrects me. it was defo a reddy tinge like a fox, but dont think they live in the Otway National Park. maybe a sunburnt kangaroo. anyway, night night.

hope its not too chilly in croydon. (!)
:-)
LOL - not that chilly (a balmy 8 degrees!)
Don't get me wrong - there's nothing 'nasty' about Melbourne. I prefer it to Sydney - it's much friendlier and there are far less out-and-out shitholes there than in Sydney. You're probably already all planned up, but if you get the chance, Hanging Rock and the Macedons are incredible. Enjoy the rest of the trip - and the last test!

Like Beer will make his debut for Australia, Bollinger is in the squad as cover for one of the seamers, and because the Aussie selectors want to check on his fitness.
It's a big ask for Khawaja to come straight in to the side and bat at number three, especially when Australia have only had two half-century opening partnerships in this series. Odds on he'll be facing the new ball and a tasty welcome to Test cricket.

PS: 'meh' means 'OK, but not that impressed'.
Pretty much agree with what Leroy says, although the sporting aspect of Melbourne makes it a great city IMO. They're roads in the Alps which are 10 times as stunning as the Great Ocean Road but aren't advertised as tourist attractions.

lol "you're getting sacked in the morning"
In the meantime, well done England a thoroughly professional job and Australia's worst Ashes defeat since 1956.
Fantastic performance, now let's stick it to 'em.

Well mine keeps jumping! 409 with the football is fine.
Enjoy the 5th test!
