[cite]Posted By: PeanutsMolloy[/cite]Shame that State Of Play is destined to be an Aintree bridesmaid but he’s in good company.
Fantastically gutsy horse, three places in a row and has to go down as an Aintree legend of the modern era... shouldn't think it's that likely he'll come back as a 12-year old next year, I'd imagine Evan Williams will have a couple of tears tonight.
Absolutely. Are you old enough to remember The Pilgarlic: 4th, 5th, 4th, 3rd from 1977~1980?
No, a few years before my time - out of interest, is that the longest run of finishes in the frame (well 5th isn't I suppose but you know what I mean).
Such a fascinating sport and a 'culture' of its own, only wish I knew more than I do but it's never too late!

Don't know for sure but I think so as regards modern times. He sticks in my memory because it was when I was getting seriously interested in jump racing and the GN. Despite the sadness, they are amazing animals, its an amazing sport and Aintree is an amazing place. Roll on next year.
[cite]Posted By: AshTray[/cite]Bulls are bred for bull fighting; is that ok?
Completely different.
Bulls are bred to fight and bred to die. Death is an inevitability of the "contest" and it is desired.
Horses are bred to race, to grow and prosper, to win, and to retire many pleasant years in pasture. Look at the parade today, Rough Quest 28 years old, 15 odd happy years well treated in retirement. Death is a horrible risk and an unfortunate occurrence. Safety measures and practices have been improved greatly in recent years and will continue to do so but there is always danger, look at poor Peter Toole.
[cite]Posted By: AshTray[/cite]Yes placed a bet for the first time in years and regret being complicit in the barbarism. Bulls are bred for bull fighting; is that ok?
I take it you lost then. Ah well, there's always next year.
So you have come to this decision today then? If so then you are on a wind up or you have never seen a race before in your life. Otherwise why place a bet? If you disagree with something then don't get involved, simple.
Against my better judgement. Wish I hadn't and winnings will go to a local donkey sanctuary. I thought safety had been improved but it hasn't. The race should have been stopped. It was disrectful to run around the corpses of competitors. I take Ross's point about the industry in general but once there were fatalities it should have been stopped out of respect.
Safety? I'm guessing you assumed the horses all wear helmets and air bags deploy when they fall these days. I really shouldn't be replying to such a pathetic excuse for a wind up but after a few cans its hard not to

Up until you said that Ashtray, I was shaking my head in disagreement but you have a point.
At very least the camera's in the helicoptor's should have been switched off at that point of the race, maybe the race should have been stopped?
But I also I agree with others, these horses are bred to race and jump.
If these horses didnt want to run when the jockey fell off, why do they keep running and even keep jumping the fences. I watched a race earlier in the week where the horses were being gathered at the start and off they went, bar one. It dug its front legs in and refused to race. It point blankly refused to take part. These horses must weigh a ton plus, if they dont want to do something my guess is, a ten stone bloke on his back with a bit of stick aint going make him.
And also, your reputation as WUM goes before you. ; )
And there is also a Donkey sanctuary at the farm on Shootershill to donate your winnings too, there is also one at Sparrows Lane ; )
Or perhaps you would like to donate you winnings as I did to the German Shepherd Rescue funds bar 20 quid for CADSA , because I remember you seem to have an opinion on me buying Bailey from a breeder rather than getting a rescue.
Take care
Ray
Thanks for sharing Peanuts, had a good meeting starting with a tenner on Masterminded and spread the winnings over the 4 tips you gave out and have probably cleared £130 after my stake, so £20 for CADSA and £110 for BIGGSD.
Thanks again

Cheers Ray. Thanks for having faith in my system. Very pleased that it made money again this year and good on you for giving away the winnings. Top man.
Me and the wife Curb-it got 2nd and 4th and are more than happy.
Many thanks for this.
You're welcome Tavern. Apologies to Curb_It that Golden Kite didn't cut the mustard. He did well to complete given that he obviously didn't take to the place.
Next year we'll bag the winner again ;o)
[cite]Posted By: northstandsteve[/cite] well done peanuts, gutted i backed oscar time on the nose, but had state of play e/w just a little down but that was down to putting on bets for the missus and kids, i backed oscar time, what a friend on the nose, state of play and hello bud e/w along with golden kite.Down £1.87 ;-).Worst thimg is watching the race with the mother in law who backed ballybriggs
Sorry about GK (and even sorrier about the mother-in-law - bad organisation there northstandsteve!). Very glad that State Of Play came from another county to cover the stakes (almost). He bailed me out aswell after laying Ballabriggs (not to large thankfully).
[cite]Posted By: nth london addick[/cite] 30 quid up thanks to peanuts tips good man
Cheers and thanks for having faith in my system nth london addick.
[cite]Posted By: red_murph[/cite]2nd and 4th following Peanuts tips, just a shame I didn't go e/w.
Really appreciate the effort you put into the system, I know nowt about horses and was great to cheer on Oscar Time coming home. Maybe next year! :0)
Cheers red_murph. Some people like a spread of win bets but for me its a % game and, especially with 5 or 6 places e/w available from a number of bookies (contrary to what the big boys say you don't often have to compromise on price to get 5 or 6 places), going each way on the best 4 candidates (and even the next 2 if they are at tasty prices) tends to pay off over time, especially if you roughly scale them to the prices.
Anyway we'll have another crack next year. All the best.
[cite]Posted By: RedArmySE7[/cite]Can only echo the others in thanking PM, 2nd and 4th is not bad going by any stretch!

The other 2 also nearly got round as well.
Cheers guys,
Certainly happy with 2 places from 4 win candidates but I think age has indeed caught up with Hello Bud - just couldn't stay with them.
Thought we were going to knick it at The Elbow but credit to those that picked Ballabriggs. Amazing that he got home, making all at that pace.

Totally different.
Don't even know why I'm responding, you're the one fishing....
And I suggest Ash Tray you are on the prowl once again playing devil's advocate.

Unlike you to be on a wind up. As if you'd be completely unaware that horses die on grand national day. Wally.

That is a great feeling having 1st and 2nd and both pulling clear at The Elbow. Well done.

Cheers JohnBoyUK. Funny to think of so many Charlton fans roaring on Sam Waley-Cohen at the finish ;o)
The other 2 also nearly got round as well.
That's a bit harsh.
