How many other Championship sides have kept hold of their best players for as long as us? Hudders lost Jack Hunt recently, Blackpool lost Matt Phillips etc etc. There is no doubt in my mind that players like Solly and Yann would garner attention but once again we have kept our squad together. Thats the only thing that doesnt fit right with this tale of doom. Yes - we are not exactly splashing the cash, but with no big backer like some of the teams in our league, why would we? If and when teams have been in serious trouble (Pompey etc) there is always a fire sale of players, especially if they are running out contract wise. That is the easiest way for any business in trouble to make quick money. Sell your assets.
Or perhaps interested clubs realise that they can pick up our "assets" for free in eight months time.
so an out of contract player. Kerkar? No, probably Ben Alnwick.
The loan window is still open isnt it?
No, closed until next week but out of contract players can sign at anytime hence Large suggesting Alnwick. But could be any player whose been released or whose contract has expired.

ah right ok. why close the loan window for a week??

It's a good point.
But it does beg the question why we are not protecting those assets by securing some of them on longer contracts.
The other possibility is that we are asking more than the buyer is willing to pay. Stephen's certainly attracted attention from a premiership club but the two clubs couldn't agree a price. Next summer he'll be available for no fee.
One of the downside of the predicted wage deflation is fee deflation (at our level that is). A decent Championship player doesn't attract much of a fee unless they are moving to the Premiership.

theres a possibility that we were waiting till the transfer window was closed before discussing contracts further. any outgoings would free up more wages and a change to the wage budget would mean better contract offers.

True but then again the savings on some or all of Hollands and Green's wages (we don't know the % or the total) could be eaten up and more by what we are paying toward's Stewart's wages and/or loan fee. We just don't know but we'd been after Stewart for a while yet only got him AFTER moving MH and DG out which suggests the incoming was reliant on one of both of the outgoing.
I hope that it is true that we are negotiating with Solly, Wiggins, etc and that they sign very soon but they are human. They can see the market and their agents can tell them what else is out there and likely to be available in the summer.
Greedy or just realistic they will expect to get what they feel they are worth. They will also see that the manager who is asking them to sign doesn't have a contract beyond summer 2014 and that while CAFC may have done some good business they aren't exactly pulling up any trees in terms of squad strengthening or on the pitch.
It may be CAFC are playing a very clever game, as some suggest, in letting most of the contracts run down but if so they are also playing a very dangerous one. We can offer players all sorts of deals but they don't have to sign them.

that's a good point as the players and their agents will now realise that there is not a market out there for their services at the monetary level they expect and therefore they might undersatnd that the actual level of the market place, we should see in the next couple of months.
In the SLP today Cawley says we were in for both Nick Powell and Dean Hammond in the last few days.
As we know Powell went to Wigan and according to Cawley we lost out on Hammond because Leicester matched his 11k a week salary.
If we had signed both of them, then I would have run around the room screaming with excitement. The fact that we were even in for them says to me that a loan move for a CM and STRIKER is still a possibility.
Think if Hammond has happened, Stephens may have left on loan.

It is encouraging that we were looking to bring in some quality players. That suggests we either have some wages budget left to play with or that the owners recognise that the way to find a buyer is to be competing/challenging higher up the table.

depends on how much of the wages the loaning Club were willing to subsidise, especially in the case of Powell

Is there any evidence that it is Alnwick or is it just circumstantial?

As for the contract situation, I would have still snapped a hand off for it three years ago if offered whilst we were finishing 13th in League One.
No expectation of #cafc doing another deal today I've just been informed
Latest FR Seems not likely to me.
