I remember reading Gary Nelson's book "Left foot forward" where he tells about the nature of a footballer's contract - I'm sure he said that when a players contract was up & a club was going to offer them a new one, that it couldn't be less than the one that had just expired...........

I may be wrong and things may have changed over the last 15 years, but if not then this may the the reason why we are letting many players go - hoping that we pick up replacements on lesser ones.

A club can offer any contract it likes - prior to Bosman though if a club wanted to retain a player's registration all they had to do was offer something equal to or more than their current deal.

This can't be true? (Not calling you a liar just never heard it before).

Scored some critical goals this season during the dark days, I wish him well (as long as he doesn't sign for smallwall or the stripey nigels ;-()

He's too injury prone for my liking. This has got to be the reason we've let him go. Can't afford to have any player only available for less than half of the season.

I'm going to trust the club on this one, and not read any inference about our finances into it. I am afraid that his performance against Millwall, rather than his very good goals, is uppermost in my mind, and I believe that SCP has made his decision based on what Haynes might have been asking for.

There is a very strong view that outside the Prem there is now downward pressure on wages. Danny Haynes agent may not yet have woken up and smelt the coffee.

Under the old rules in England you could retain a player, regardless of his wishes, if you offered the same or more money. That has changed now.

Bosman was offered less than he was on but under the rules in Belguim he still couldn't leave. So he went to court, won, and players got free agency at the end of deals.

    so so suprised

What Sheffield Red said, 'Decent player but too often unavailable.' The point being that he is never going to have transfer value with his dodgy hamstrings so TJ will move him on. Shame as I like him in the squad.

It's a shame as on his day he is well worth having, some of his goals this season have been class but with money supposedly tight, we can't be having someone injured half the season.

Got a bad feeling he might end up at Millwall though!

Agree with Prague on trusting the club on this. I'll be very surprised if we don't have 4 senior strikers in the squad after the transfer window closes.

Could be a corking signing , doubt we could afford him?

Our excellent end of season run showed that we were ready and able to progress without Danny. Maybe that surprised CP, as when he was scoring some critical winners, it felt that we would struggle without him. It does worry me that we have also released the player that kept him out, in Fuller.

Did CP and Haynes fallout after the Millwall game? He had a rare complete shocker (yes, against Shittu) and did not have a look in from then.

I'm stunned by this news, tbh. Can only assume we have some big names lined up for the Prem push. Disappointed, all the same, as I've watched Danny from Ipswich days and he is quality - that pace is such an asset and he can finish with both feet. I heard he was seeing a top specialist to sort out his hamstrings. Someone is going to benefit from his release - l am frankly gutted! Hope it doesn't come back to bite us on the arse!

He is quality but too often injured. The club has to decide whether next season will be better. I can't imagine I would want to pay him more when there is a big doubt as to how many games you wil get out of him. Not sure there will be a long queue either to be honest, despite him having a lot of ability.

I have one thing to say about this:

    =(

If we had money to spare then I would say he's worth retaining but if for whatever reason we need money freed up then I think releasing him makes sense.

Will never forget DH for that goal up at Leicester, and his goal celebration routine.

Ryan Giggs had huge, ongoing hamstring issues for years and, finally, he got sorted out, maybe America, not sure but that was when he was 26 - still playing now at nearly 40 and playing bloody well. Saw Giggs play at Old Trafford vs Chelsea in 2000 after he got sorted and, finally, he could stretch his legs without fear and sprint like a greyhound - seeing was believing as to his pace - bloody incredible!
Anyway, maybe Danny's hamstrings can't be sorted, if so, that would be a tragedy for the lad.
Personally, wouldn't be surprised if he were to be picked up by a Prem club - a Cardiff City or the likes.

Sad to see him go, hopefully we'll retain Harriott so we still have some pace. Appreciate it's a tough call, when I saw the announcement I didn't feel good; the earlier releases were understandable in terms of the players, Haynes scored some great goals for us last season, if only he was fit more. I can see him ending up in SE14, sadly.

Haynes was out of contract. We had as much entitlement to sign him as any other club. Would we really be rushing to sign a player fit/good enough to start 12 out of 46 games ?

I wish Danny all the best, but when you have cheesestrings instead of hamstrings it ain't good.

I'd say the club have made the correct decision. Albeit a tough call.

I hear Jay Simpson has just been released, could be worth a gamble, and Ebanks Blake has been let go to,i think there will be a few good forwards looking for clubs, let hope we don't drag our heels like we seem to do most years

I don't know the detail of his fitness issues - the club does. It is difficult to comment without those details.

I trust the club's judgement but still a shame. Not liking the complaints about the Millwall game either, I really don't think he was fit and it's not his fault if chosen.

Hopefully this won't come back to bite us. His winner at Leicester will long stick with me.

Strange comment from you Muttley. I think we all know sufficiently well, that he couldn't maintain fitness to put together more than 5 games at a time, without pulling a hamstring.

It could well do, but sounds like it was a tough call and that is what Chrissy has shown he is pretty good at.
