Agree - it's likely to be a tightening of the muscles that people always call 'the IT band'. However, it's usually not the actual IT band that's the problem - it's the glutes. I had a knee problem that sounds identical to yours - after fighting it (and by 'fighting it' I mean doing nothing for a week then getting back on the bike and having it flare up again) I finally bit the bullet and went to a physio. Took him about 30 minutes of various stretches, planks etc to diagnose a basically non-existent left glute muscle. He gave me lots of exercises aimed at strengthening it, including the foam roller as CC says above - but with really specific instructions on how to do it so as to actually roll the muscle, rather than the IT band itself (pointless, because it isn't a muscle, so can't get 'tight' - see here for details)
The roller REALLY hurts - but it made a big, big difference to me, and meant I was back on the bike after a month
Roller arrived today and found plenty of good videos on YouTube. Only thing they don't say is how many "reps" to do, if that's the right phrase. Any ideas?
It's not reps - more time. This is where a physio comes in handy - they'll be able to devise a program for you that takes everything about you into account
Yep - booked an appointment for next Tuesday as I have no idea which areas to target or which is the main reason behind the pain. Had a go at stretching thighs, hamstring and calves and feel much better already.
Training going well for my London to Monte Carlo ride for Bexley Hospice and Pancreatic Cancer. Got up to 150 miles this weekend back to back.
Recently bought myself a Garmin edge 810 so the both of us on the ride have one just incase. What I need to try and find is GPS routes for the ride we are doing. Someone told me before you can search and find other cyclists routes on an app?
Also some advice for our next purchase. We need a "GO Pro" type camera. Is it worth forking out the extra and buying the real deal or are some of the other ones just as good? We will use it mainly for the 10 day ride in July to create some video blogs and upload snaps but also in training and when we are back. Any ideas?
Apologies if already been discussed before, the thread is 42 pages long using my mobile... Feel free to link me back if it has.
I bought a contour HD camera about 3 years ago and the amount of faff was ridiculous. Bought a Go Pro 4 silver last year and the footage and overall experience was well worth the extra. Absolutely love my Go Pro.
@heavense7 - look for the routes on 'Ride with GPS', Strava or Garmin Connect . If you can't find a route on one those sites, it is fairly easy to plot it yourself (probably Ride With GPS and Strava being the easiest). You can then save and download the routes direct to your Garmin. Check the inbuilt maps in your Garmin...on my 800, I had to fork out an extra £30 or so to get the latest roads etc on a memory card, but my new Garmin 1000 has them built in and updated automatically... Good luck.

Best route planner i've found is bikehike - really simple to use. Get in touch with the organisers though, as it's likely they'll have a gpx route for you.
Never owned a gopro myself, but used one a fair few times. So easy to use and great quality. If you look on ebay you can buy joint garmin/go pro mounts which minimise the amount of space taken up on the handlebars (if you want to mount it there).
As I'm increasing my mileage I am finding myself (more and more frequently) "zoning out" during rides. I'll just lose a mile completely, won't remember the last 3-4 minutes of the ride.
Now I don't know whether this is because I'm on auto-pilot covering similar routes? Regardless I find it really un-nerving and it is no doubt pretty risky, can't help but think that I'm eventually going to come a cropper and miss a pothole or something worse.
Does this happen to anyone else or am I just a weirdo?

It happens to me from time to time - sometimes it's a good thing, you are tackling a vicious hill (which is pretty much everything around these parts) & your mind wanders & before you know it you are half way up it...that's a good feeling.
However a lot of the time I am on extra high alert, it's bear season & the other night there was a huge Griz just off the main road biking trail to Banff - normally more of an issue if you are mountain biking in the forest, but I am often scanning ahead & making lots of noise to avoid bumping into them

it's perfectly normal and nothing to worry about, most people experience it while driving

'Driving is not an intense task. Once you're used to it, it is almost as simple as walking; you simply do not need to actually think about most of what's going on. Memory is triggered by novelty. If you see something new or interesting, you are more likely to remember it. Conversely, if you see something you've seen dozens of times before, unless something unusual happens you are unlikely to remember it. A person who drives 10000 miles per year, and has done so for the last decade, will have in that time spent around 2500 hours on the road. Truly novel experiences on the road will be very rare. In short, you are probably paying all necessary attention to the road as you drive. However, you don't bother forming memories of the experience because you have done it all before.'
basically your memory is constantly overwriting itself. if you remembered everything your head would explode. You are paying attention but you just don't bother recording the everyday repetitive bits, it's highly unlikely you're actually zoned out
Looks like injury has been diagnosed as patella compression syndrome. Physio recommended a range of stretches which seemed to be helping but woken up after first ride in two weeks and knee in pain again. Very frustrating.
SRAM double tap shifting is brilliant. Have it on my Cannondale and I'd never go back to Shimano now. Have had the bike since August 2015 and the gears haven't needed adjusting once.
I was in my local Cycles UK the other day and noticed a lovely looking bike with the brand name Merida. Never heard of that brand before so asked the guy in the shop and he said over 90% of all bikes are actually made by either Merida or Giant. He said Merida have only recently started promoting their own brand.

Merida have been around for years. They own 50% of Specialized.
I believe Merida are often cheaper as their main factories are in China and Taiwan.

Good luck - sounds like a great ride, when is it?

Anyone fancy going out for a ride now the weather's improving ?
@olster is keen but don't think he'll be able to keep up.

Southend away next season could be a decent match to organise a ride to. Maybe raise some funds for upbeats or any other charity.
A lot off bike for the price i think.

Was buying an off road bike for Mrs M-a-M and have to say the service was once again, excellent.

Tidy flat.
Good luck with that.
We tried before when the Charlton shirts were delivered but to no avail.
