Just a cheap fluid one - have just borrowed it off of a mate to see if i get along with the idea of it, then might invest in something better. Did a session this morning, was good - just about whether I can do 3/4 a week for the next few months...

Brought this in the end as a winter/commute bike, chunky tires, and mudguards. Does the job, actually goes quite well, for cable driven discs they stop well, and its a pretty comfy ride

I don't suppose any Lifers commute to work? And if so do you have any recommendations on the right bike of the job?

I'm going to be riding from North Greenwich to Southwark everyday. Ideally I'd want a fixed gear, something sturdy that doesn't require a whole lot of maintenance.

You ride fixy? Well played, never have myself and must admit it frightens me. Especially if you have to stop suddenly.

Indeed, probably not the best bike to start commuting on.

Commuting on fixed is fine. Did it before, and just started riding one again. Done a few 50km commutes from my girlfriend's house over the last couple of weeks.

Once you get in the habit/flow it really is no different to being on a freewheel.

I've got a basic fuji track which is a simple steel frame. No need to get anything fancy. Have a read of lfgss.com which is an excellent forum. I'm about 6ft 2 and not about in london until next weekend (10th) but if you wanted to have a shot on mine to try it out just send me a message.

Always shared my dads old bike which was a fixed gear, so just used to them. Now that I'm moving out I'll need to get my own one.

Mind you the roads of North Kent are more forgiving than South London, so I might have to reconsider.

Cheers mate. Being 5ft 8 I reckon it might be a bit big for me.

Will take a look at the forum. Thanks for the recommendation.

No problem. Tends to be a good place to buy stuff from too and fair prices, because if you don't post a fair price you get quickly called a cnut. Built a bike for my gf and got a full ultegra 6500 groupset there for £80.

I'm hoping to do the Shark Audax on April 2 2017. 200k from Greenwich to Seaford and back. Does anyone fancy joining me?
Just google shark audax for details.

And another thing. My bike has a double chain ring at the front, can a 3 ring be fitted instead?

@iainment i could be keen on the audax. Bloody love a good audax.

Yes - i presume to add in a granny ring at the front? Although depending on your current set up you may need a new shifter, and possibly a new front mech. If you're going to a smaller front ring then you should be fine with your current rear mech and rear derailliur. It may be more sensible to increase the gearing on your rear cassette, and you may get away with just having to change the chain depending on your rear mech.

Basically, it should be more than possible but depends on your current set up.

No no no no no nooo! No putting triple chainwheels on the front mech.
Surely that has to be a rule in the 'rules'?
Well technically you can but you wont ever use it.

If you're struggling for more gears on the hills, change the back cassette for a 11-28.
Christ, even I could do 10 reps of Toys Hill followed by Brasted Hill on a 11-28 so you shouldn't need a triple, like ever.
  • Never heard of that Shark ride, but it comes 4 weeks ahead of me attempting the Mallorca 312, so will be a good test of where I'm at...will most likely join you on the ride @iainment

I used to love my Christmas morning rides. 3 years in a row I went and rode 50 miles before lunch. Gave me an excuse to eat like a horse when I got back!

Did 25 miles last Xmas morning. Went out to do the same on 27th and promptly crashed and broke my shoulder.

Aiming to get out for a couple of hours this coming Xmas day, but it depends on the weather.

We usually go on the LCC Christmas Day ride. A gentle ride around London with a nice group.

Am looking to get a turbo trainer.
Having never used one before has anyone got any tips or suggestions?

Which group is this? If I recall correctly you're based in Plumstead so wouldn't mind joining you

Southwark Cyclists - but on looking it looks like it's not on this year.

Sorry it is on! Look at the cyclinguk events web page. Starts at 10am from Cutty Sark Gardens. A gentle amble through London.
  • I'm aiming for the 500, but have a TT on boxing day and not sure what days I'm working over Christmas so might not make it. The mileage isn't the issue - I could knock that off in two days - it's the weather and other commitments that make the 500 difficult

I've got a cheap fluid one which i've been using for the last couple of weeks. If you can afford it though, get a Smart Trainer like @Leroy Ambrose suggested before.
  • @Bow_Addick - I've used a Cyclops for years and had no issues....that said, I am just about to upgrade to a Wahoo Kick'r...

This. All day long. The triple has been rendered redundant by 10 speed cassettes and wider derailleur cages. If you're struggling up hills, investigate getting a longer derailleur cage - one that can accommodate up to 32 tooth cogs. Pair that with a 50/36 and you'll never run out of gears - if you're having problems pushing a 36-32 uphill, then you're either not fit enough or are on the Angliru.
