Well, you can live in denial if you like...entirely up to you.

Club size, fan base, general operating level/performance of team, general history of success/failure, demographic of supporters...they're only 10 miles away from us after all. Like it or not, they are very comparable to us.

If the playing surface is damp, it's going to take a stud to do the job.

I'd say it has been a while since her playing surface was damp & it'd need one hell of a stud to break it down!

Football wise you're right, we are quite similar regards to achievements and playing level(though we have a major trophy in our collection). But you are just wrong on the fan base.

Note my username, I'm sort of an expert on the subject.

Some Cafc fans' obsession to have a rival is bordering on sad now.
Very few fans of any other club view us a rivals. We're nice and fairly successful. Who gives a fk if we don't have a 'rival'. Grow up it's dull.

Agree with you on that, Yes we all want Charlton to be above Millwall and beat them, and for all you younger boys years ago Millwall fans And Charlton fans used to go to each other's grounds to watch the game when there team we're playing away.

In my exchange with SLL I think it proves the rivalry thing is actually quite personal for Charlton .I have a mate who follows the Spanners but apart from that now I live in East London there are no other connections. I do understand why they see the Hammers as big rivals and it is due in my opinion to non football reasons. There is no regular fixture like the North London / Manchester or Merseyside derbies. The main association would be the fact that both teams were notorious back in the day.

The reason I saw Millwall as rivals in the 60's,70's,80's and much of the 90's,we were in the same division around 50% of the time .In the 70's I too spent 2 or 3 seasons going to both clubs alternatively until I discovered the fun of away games when I turned 15.
The 13 years when we didn't play them lessened the rivalry for me and I even went there a few times with my mate . I even wanted the Spanners to win against United in the 2004 Cup Final . The rivalry only began for me when we played them again.

In an ideal world I would like them to stay up this season because it does make the season more interesting ,but at the moment until we are safe I cheer every defeat in the same way I do for Barnsley,Birmingham,Blackpool Doncaster and Yeovil.

Richard, what are the football reasons for our rivalry?

If we were actually 200 miles apart, what part of our footballing head to head would give rise to our rivalry?

Or is it driven by these "non-football" reasons, namely, geographical location, fanbase, etc?

SLL it is clear we are not going to agree on this .

Of course geography would dictate we are rivals because the majority of both clubs' supporter base would live, work and socialise in the same area. This would be the same for most of the classic rivalries. When I lived in Sidcup ,both Charlton and Millwall were well represented in the clubs and pubs that I would drink in.

I talked in my post about our rivalry over a 20 year period when I first started going because we shared a Division about 50% of the time .It did stop being a rivalry for me in the 13 years that we never played each other. No one seriously talks about a Potteries derby between Port Vale and Stoke apart from a brief spell in the 90's and the turn of the millennium. In terms of history that would match the gap between you and the happy Hammers.

I accept it is a personal thing. I mentioned the traditional group of families from the East London Docks like Bob Crow's or Terry Hurlock's who saw the happy Hammers as rivals for historical reasons and those who are pwpa nwty .Since you moved south of the River the majority of your support came from Bermondsey , Southwark and Lewisham not the Eat End , so Charlton and Palace would be more natural rivals especially as both of us have shared a Division for long periods of time and your support have moved out further into SEL/Kent where Charlton were well established.

Many of your fans claim special rivalries with Birmingham ,Cardiff and Leeds. What is that about? Certainly not football.

For what its worth it doesn't really bother me that much, except it makes me smile when you have the highest attendance of home fans for our match most seasons when we play and there were more Charlton fans watching Saturday's match against Reading than were there against you in September.

In fairness, our highest attendance of the year should be Millwall at home but our fans are too 'scared' to turn up.

No point claiming it's Millwall's rep that scares them off, you could easily get to and from The Valley without seeing a Millwall fan all day

    you think so?
The game before last the 161 trip home was not very pleasant and ended with a few kids in tears.

Never heard any Millwall claiming that we have special rivalries with Cardiff or Birmingham.

Leeds is actually an example of where a proper footballing rivalry threatened to exist for a few seasons. Played eachother 20 times in a decade. They disliked Dennis Wise due to the Chelsea links. & also Jody Morris who scored a late penalty equaliser. Beat them in the play-offs one year. They pipped us to automatic by a point the year later.

Sounds like a lot of football reasons to me. Helped by their hatred of all things "cockney" and their inability to bully us like they do most places due to their sheer numbers.

& on your last point, it's pretty clear many of your fans steer clear of our games for fear of violence. Not that they see it as a nothing game.

Having Both My Parents plus other family members born in Bermondsey(i was as well)
you can imagine how difficult my life has been, even thou i escaped when i was just one year old
    and taken to Sunny Sidcup.
The thought that i could be singing "we are Millwall no one likes us" still makes me wake up in a cold sweat.

Do we want them to drop or do we want them to stay up so we can start beating them(pigs might fly)
I guess the Answer is Millwall go down, Bring on the Palace next season.

Palace are the nearest team to where i live now, so i'm surrounded by palace and Chelsea fans.

Out of the frying pan and in to the fire.

Will greatly enhance our chance of a few extra points if the scum go down.

Holloway quoted in today's Evening Standard:

"I would like people in 10 years to say, 'What a job Holloway has done [at Millwall]. Look at the football they play now and look at the way they pass the ball. Look at how many they have got in the England team.' Why not?"

Ha ha. Millwall players in the England team? Dream on, Holloway...

I wonder how Holloway will react, if they lose a few and they start c**ting him off, as they do.

I reckon he'll lose it big time.

Well I was close. He hid in the dug out

That was the final nail in the coffin I think. Bottle jobs aren't tolerated at Millwall.

Agree with that. A manager who hides is weak and not up to the job. How can players and fans have any belief in someone like that.
