Coles innings was worth the admission alone and was so funny watching them run the single on the last ball of each over. That would have been the greatest of great escapes had Coles not skied one with 17 runs left! Lost count of the amount of sixes Coles hit.
Although Kent lost, it was a real privilege to have been at the Oval tonight. Just witnessed a wonderful bit of batting by Matt Coles. Gareth Batty's tactic of endlessly drying the ball after every delivery was tedious and unsporting, and would undoubtedly have taken Surrey over the cut off time if Coles hadn't holed out. Fantastic entertainment by MC. Thanks.
A great innings by Coles, where did that come from?
He has the potential to be a really good player, but does need to lose a few pounds. Looking at the Kent bowling attack tonight, it must be one of the fattest around. Claydon and Coles are definitely overweight for opening bowlers, Tredders and Stevens aren't exactly slim either. Clearly the cooks at Canterbury are laying on too much food!
DBD isn't delivering on his potential, Denly has been a disappointment, Key has been a Sky commentator, and then you have Cowdrey at No 4 today? A guy with no 100s? Alex Blake, what exactly is his role in the team etc
Thats that for the cricket season then? Can ignore this thread until the spring which might be a relief!
Not at all. Charlton's local club side Blackheath CC, of which I am an Honoury Vice President and a member of for over 35 years, are in the semi-final of the National Club Cricket Championship this Sunday. We are at home at The Rectory Field against Bath CC. 12pm start. We won this competition in 1971 by beating Ealing and were runners up to Scarborough in 1981. Both these finals were played at Lords but sadly this is no longer the case.
I guess that was the result I expected, but I did'nt see the match panning out like that. It looked like a typical Kent surrender after the bowlers had bowled us back to a realistic target when at 190-2 it looked as if it was all over. Cue the opening five batsmen showing the Kent championship standard of batting. And then, with the game closing down Coles delivers a master class. Not enough in the end, but if one or two of the more recognised batsman had shown some of Coles determination, it might have been. Surrey go through with a small fright. Kent go back into hibernation, and I asume we can expect more of the same next season.
How does 273 in the first innings equate to a target of 252 from 40???? Effectively shaving 60 balls from our innings but only 21 runs from the target.
Nor me! Absolute joke and spoilt the game. Well done to Cole and sadly we left when Stevens was out so missed the nail-biting end. D/L is a joke.

Loss of 2 wickets before DL.
If that is the case it really doesn't make sense in accessing a new total at that stage of the game. Only 7 overs gone and we don't get the wickets back. I can understand wickets need to be taken into account in accessing who's won a game that's finished but not at that stage.
D/L needs to be looked at again. It puts too much weight on wickets, we lose 10 overs but they only knock 20 odd of the total - how can that be fair?!?
That Matt Coles century is now officially my all time favourite innings! Wish he would apply himself like this more often rather than his usual 6 and out routine. There's a proper all-rounder in there somewhere
Shame (but not a surprise) our top order bat like gang of twats yet again!

Riiv, keep us informed as to how it goes. Where's the final this year?
Blackheath CC comfortably defeated Bath CC by 95 runs and now play Northen CC, from Liverpool in the final of ECB National Club Championship. The match is at Kent's ground at Beckenham on Sunday 20th September.
Kent 235-3 at the close against Lancashire in the county championship on a rain interrupted day.
A ton for Fat Bob. Too little too late by our batsmen sadly.
Was there today, mainly for the presentation to the Kent Performance boys and girls.
The game had very much an end of season feel to it as evidenced by Lancs turning up with a very much second string attack - Glenn Chappell, at almost 42, opening the bowling in only his 4th game in any competition this season backed up by three seamers with no more than 60 first class wickets between them.
Don't really understand why the likes of Key (despite his ton) and Harmison in particular are playing as I would hope that they won't be with us next season. And why, having offered Dickson a contract, wasn't he given an opportunity to play here?

You dont want Key with you next season ?? Thought he would be a perfect mentor for the young'uns.?

He simply isn't playing enough to do that. In fact I would go so far as to say he has spent more days on Sky this summer than playing for Kent.
Sam Northeast needs to be left to take over the reigns on his own without influence from Key - he will be 26 next month and made his debut as an 18 year old exactly eight years ago. In any case, I suspect that Key will retire at the end of the season and we will probably still have Treders and Stevens as well as Denly around to lend a helping hand if required.
John Palmer has very much been an unsung hero over the years and has had to put up with the lack of facilities and an area where the promotion of cricket is simply not on the agenda of schools in the Borough.
Lewisham players and their opposition have had to play in public parks with the associated fouling from the animals that roam with or without handlers. And in the main the Lewisham players have simply not been good enough for District cricket.
Take this years U12 games. Lewisham are in a group with Greenwich, Bromley and Bexley. In 30 over games, Greenwich and Bromley scored 322-4 and 342-0 respectively with Lewisham being dismissed for 25 and 47. The match against Bexley was abandoned due to bad weather.
These results are not untypical and with neither Greenwich nor Bromley fielding current Kent U12 players it really puts into perspective the tide that John was swimming against.
But Lewisham as a District won't disappear totally as they will join forces with Greenwich as one area. I would like to think that John will continue to have some input and those players such as the writer of this article son, James, will get the opportunity to play for the newly formed area and to trial once again for Kent.
The formation of eight areas simply had to happen and will now mean better competition - and by definition improved development for the better players in the County. The jump from District was, under the old system, simply too great. That doesn't make the loss of Lewisham and John any less palatable.

Sounds like quite a game...well, the last quarter of it anyway as far as Kent supporters are concerned.
Matt Coles' ton !!! Would love to have seen it . Such a pity he couldn't wrap up the victory but D/L didn't do us ANY favours...
Hard luck to our lads - there's always next year...

I wonder what our target would have been had we not lost that wicket just as the heavens opened. I assume it would have been revised?

4 batting points unless God can conjure up a maximum!
He's 29* Northeast 67*
