does anyone remember Kent beating Warwickshire at lords in, I think, a gillete cup final either late 60's or early 70's. could possibly be a benson & hedges final? I know I went but can't find any links?
Cant find any record of Kent playing Warwickshire in a one day final around that time. The Benson & Hedges didn't start until 1972. Kent won B&H finals against Worcestershire a couple of times in 1973 and 1976. Kent were an excellent one day side then and also won two finals of the Gillette Cup at Lord's in 1967 (Somerset) and 1974 (Lancashire).
thanks.
maybe it was worcestershire and in the b & h in 73, it was definitely around that time.
Kent 235-3 at the close against Lancashire in the county championship on a rain interrupted day.
A ton for Fat Bob. Too little too late by our batsmen sadly.
Was there today, mainly for the presentation to the Kent Performance boys and girls.
The game had very much an end of season feel to it as evidenced by Lancs turning up with a very much second string attack - Glenn Chappell, at almost 42, opening the bowling in only his 4th game in any competition this season backed up by three seamers with no more than 60 first class wickets between them.
Don't really understand why the likes of Key (despite his ton) and Harmison in particular are playing as I would hope that they won't be with us next season. And why, having offered Dickson a contract, wasn't he given an opportunity to play here?
Well it looks like Kent are at least looking to the future for the CC game against Glamorgan starting tomorrow with the recipients of their first contracts, Sean Dickson and Imran Qayyum, included in the 12 man squad. They have also added Adam Riley and Ryan Davies deputises for Sam Billings.
Kent squad: 17 Sam Northeast (captain), 23 Daniel Bell-Drummond, 4 Robert Key, 6 Joe Denly, 58 Sean Dickson, 3 Darren Stevens, 7 Ryan Davies, 26 Matt Coles, 25 Calum Haggett, 14 Matt Hunn, 11 Imran Qayyum, 33 Adam Riley.

I suspect one of the spinners will be 12th man.
Personally I'd like Riley to have a chance to salvage something from the ravages of the England coaches.
On the other hand if it's not turning being deposited in the Taff might not help!
Rumours are that Alex blake is on his way to sussex, real shame if that's the case.
I saw that too but thought he'd rejected that move. Wouldn't surprise me if he does make the move though as we will probably only offer a one year extension and his opportunities to play the longer format of the game with us have been somewhat limited.
Michael Vaughan has stated that Bell-Drummond should open with Cook in the 2017 Ashes. Big big shout from Vaughan. He said that he only averages thirty but it is not always about numbers.
D B-D needs to improve two aspects of his game. The first is concentration because that is the main reason he gets out so often in the 20s and 30s and the other is his ability to play quality spin. The former is a mental thing but the other he is unlikely to succeed at playing in Division 2 of the CC.
D B-D averages a fraction over 25 this season in the CC with 691 from 27 innings. This includes two hundreds and just one fifty which really isn't good enough for a player of his ability.
Before the under age winter training sessions began the parents of the boys had a meeting with the Kent Academy Manager. D B-D was held up as an example of a player who had experienced next to no levels of failure from the age of 11 through to going directly into the first team as an 18 year old. It was suggested that Kent made a mistake in not playing him as a 16 year old in the second team because D B-D might then have been tested to the extent that he would have failed and then learned from that experience.
D B-D needs to now go away for the winter to foreign climes and build on his undoubted talent because next season could, wither way, be a big one for him.
One swallow and all that but Dickson could end up being a decent find. He was certainly given a long run in the 2nd team and unlike the likes of Cowdrey, Harmison, Blake etc etc was very consistent at that level.

With out dismal record in the 4 day matches this season/decade, surely Blake would have got an opportunity to play if the country considered him good enough.
Personally, I don't see what he beings to the table. In T20s he'll hit a quick 20, but he's not a great run scorer and not really a bowler either

Apart from Northeast he was our best batsman in T20 this season with 304 runs at an average of 38 and won us the game against Hants. And averaged over 50 in the Royal London so was actually our best one day batsman.

I stand corrected. I think my views were coloured by him failing every time I saw him!
I'd be surprised if he hasn't got a bit of a complex with that "nickname". Although, having seen him reject the odd quick single last Tuesday, Usain Bolt would have struggled to beat him when the call for lunch came such was his speed leaving the pitch!
