Easy to say now but I did wonder if "Deadly" was John Dye in the first place.
Now I know it was.
If Ralph Coates had been in the picture we would have had a full set ;-)
Asif was a hero of mine growing up too and I had the great pleasure of having a good chat with him three years ago when Seb first trialed for Kent. He was there to support his grandson but gave great encouragement to all the boys especially when they played a good shot or bowled well.
As classy then as he was some 40 or so years before when playing in a team full of legends. Well they were to me anyway ;-)
I saw Asif Iqbal play in a charity game at Bromley CC, back in about 1968 or 9? He scored his 50 in 32 balls I seem to recall, which in those days was very fast! I have always used that as a yardstick even nowadays as to how quick a fifty really is.
It was a great shame that Asif was tainted by the corruption investigations a few years back; apparently he was involved with a toss (when captain of Pakistan) where he said he would bat before the coin had landed. He then walked off leaving the oppo skipper with no option but to field. In those days, only the captains were involved in the toss so nobody knew who was telling the truth.
So anyone heard if we are having an overseas next year? One would think we will keep the homegrown policy going rather than splash the money.
Would really love to see a bowling all-rounder to back up Coles.
I very much doubt that we will. Will release three or four players probably, rely on the youngsters and try to pick up a couple from other counties.
One "interesting" aspect of this season is that, following Blake's CC debut, we have used 20 players - with not one overseas or single player on loan or otherwise from another county.
Of these, Nash has gone and Harmison is surely going. I was thinking that Key would retire but it seems he isn't now. Of those that haven't played this season, I would expect Griffiths and Hartley to be released. If we add the newly contracted additions this season, namely Weller, Qayyum and Bernard this would leave a squad of 21:
Key Northeast Bell-Drummond Dickson Denly Billings Davies Blake Cowdrey Stevens Ball Haggett Tredwell Riley Qayyum Claydon Coles Hunn Thomas Weller Bernard
Would love to see a quick bowler in, there's only so much darren stevens is able to do. The bowlers we have coming through like hunn thomas and haggett are all very one paced. Would love to see someone like stuart meaker come in. genuine quick bowler who has fallen down the pecking order at surrey. Might be worth looking at bringing balcombe back? God knows what's happened to him.

I know I'm not always welcome on this thread but I can shed some light on two points you bring up!
Meaker would be a great addition for you guys and were he to move on I wouldn't blame him last. He has been badly treated by Surrey and has fallen down the pecking order for absolutely no reason. I feel he needs to move on to somewhere new where he will be backed and selectors will show confidence in him and then he will regain his mojo. There have been rumours of him being off to Essex but I am hearing from my sources that he is staying put for one more year.
Balcombe however is an odd one. He seems to have permanently lost it! Zero confidence pace is low and absolutely no radar at all.. In one second eleven game he bowled a 19 ball over.. I mean something is wrong if your doing that.. He has struggled to get in the second eleven at times this year and in fact hasn't played any of their big games. If you want him back you are more than welcome to him.

That sounds like the "yips". It happened to a friend of mine, Gavin Hamilton (of Scotland and England), who had to give up bowling because of it.
Real shame to hear balcombe has lost his way, was unplayable at times when he was down with us onloan. Must say Surrey really do have a cracking selection of seam bowlers all fairly young as well!
Wish kent had the same amount of talent coming through in that department. Always lacked genuine out and out pace wicket taking bowlers.
Another inspection today at 12.45. I would suggest that everyone shakes hands and wishes each other a good winter 'cos there isn't going to be a result in this game. Even if they tried to contrive one.

Got that one right ...
Come on we allow away fans into our ground. As long as they behave themselves ;-)

Anymore of that lip and it'll kick off in the home end in a minute. Do you want some?!
Moving house next Monday so FAR too busy here to be dancing !
Good luck with the move Fanny @Fanny Fanackapan Loads of work both sides of the move but will surely be worth it for a dream move. If I could only persuade Mrs Davo to shift from leafy Berkshire, I would be moving to the area in/around Cranbrook in record time!

John Shepherd's left arm, David Nicholls, Asif Iqbal, Stuart Leary, Derek Underwood and Brian Luckhurst.
Three of those sadly no longer with us.
EDIT: John Dye next to Brian Luckhurst and Stuart Leary not "Deadly."

Graham Johnson (I think), Norman Graham, Alan Brown extreme left behind Knotty and Deadly.
Alan Ealham and Woolmer maybe behind Colin Cowdrey.
Not 100% on Johnson or Woolmer.

So we might not even end up signing anyone else!
